Francis Marion Sylvest & Mary Jane O'Rourke

Francis Marion Sylvest was born March 23, 1844. He was probably born near Covington or Pearl River, Louisiana for earliest recollections attest that his parents lived in this vicinity during the early years of their marriage. He with his next older brother and sister are listed in the 1850 Federal Census of Washington Parish. The next written record of his family is in 1861 when his father homesteaded a tract of land from the State of Louisiana. He was seventeen at the time and was called into the service of the confederacy. No record of his service has been found, but several members of his family remember facts which verify it. He came home in uniform at one time when his younger brother Edward Alexander was seven years old. He placed his huge hand on the head of the lad which was a thrill for him to tell his children.

Francis Marion was married about 1865 to Mary Jane ORourke, the daughter of an Irish immigrant. She was born March 19, 1848 near Columbia, Mississippi. She died January 26, 1923, and Francis Marion died October 11, 1904. They lie buried in the church yard of St. Marys Catholic Church about ten miles East of Columbia, Mississippi, in Marion County.

Francis Marion became most affectionately known as Frank. He and Mary Jane established their home on the South side of Bogue Chitto River and about seven miles South of Franklinton. They remained in this location until 1880 when Marys Father, a devout Catholic, persuaded him to sell out and move to Mississippi. Seven children were born to them before they made this move.

They had paid for their farm home and accumulated enough cattle to bring 300 silver dollars when the sale was consummated. Her father had encouraged the move to the extent of giving the a section of the land. Soon after arriving at their new home, Frank traded the 300 silver dollars for 1,000 head of sheep and he continued in the wool and lamb market for several years. He also farmed extensively with his large family. Five other children were born to Frank and Mary after their move to Mississippi.

Frank had difficulty in selling his land in Louisiana and failed until his father came to his rescue about three years later. His father also made some concessions in building his new Mississippi home. It was near the St. Marys Catholic Church. His wife was largely the founder of the church with her large family. It was known as the Sylvest Catholic Church for several of its early years but was changed to St. Marys for sacred reasons. The church yard has become the final resting place for more than thirty people, mostly related to the family.

For a few years there was also a Post Office near the church; it was known as Sylvest, Mississippi. Its life was not very long since the star routes came along about that time just before the turn of the century.

Frank and Mary managed to visit their Louisiana relatives almost every year for the first four or five visits began to become fewer and less meaningful. Contact was very slim until about 1950 when the first Sylvest reunions were begun.

Twelve children were born to Frank and Mary Sylvest:

This marriage was over the protests of her parents and family so soon after the Civil War. He was born March 24, 1851 and died near Hattisburg, Mississippi in 1916.

They bought land and established their farm home at Seminary, Mississippi. He farmed as a livelihood and operated a Gristmill as part of his farming activities. In later years they opened a small general store and dropped the main farming tasks. Then they began to raise chickens for the market and this in connection with the Gristmill made a good living.

He continued with his fathers method of operating a Gristmill along with very small farming operations as a livelihood. His Gristmill business grew to far greater proportions than he probably expected for he was not able to supply sufficiently all of the large grocery chains of stores that wanted to sell his product. He served most all larger stores and supermarkets in the southeastern area of Mississippi. He was able too to maintain the General Store with the help of his mother and his wife whom he married in 1954.

He was married in 1954 to Dorothy Mae Burgess, the daughter of Mary Ethel and Bill Burgess of Waynesboro, Mississippi. The ceremony was performed on March 8. They had only one girl to them on January 1, 1955.
