What kind of intelligence testing is available for my gifted school aged child?
I requested testing for R through the schools. They told me she must be recommended by a
teacher. I told them that I was her teacher & recommending it strongly. They did the
IQ testing as well as an academic achievement test, at no cost, last year. That one told me
she was at least highly gifted & hit the ceiling of that test. Next I will have the
Stanford-Binet LM done (the best one for accuracy from the research I have done & which
is best done between 4-8 years of age to avoid the ceiling) this year though John Hopkins
University's Talent Search. The cost will be $20 to apply & $50 to test.

I believe I found some very interesting information on the WISC III test at
http://www.hoagiesgifted.org. Our county requires that children score 130+ to enroll in
their gifted programs, which from what I have read about the WISC III is difficult to do.
They have a low ceiling so it is hard for a child to score above a 150 on the test. Luckily
my son is very strong in math/logic skills so this balanced out his average verbal skills.
If your son misses the 125 mark by a couple of points, you might want to consider private
testing. Children must work quickly on puzzles and answer even silly questions thoroughly
on the WISC III. WISC III does have subtests to show the strengths and weaknesses of the
children, which is great.
