1.Can turtles come out of their shell? No- tho some crabs can, turtles can not. Their shells are part of them. 2.Don't turtles stink? Most turtles do not stink if their enviroment is kept clean.There is a species called the stinkpot who does put off an oder when he feels threaten or stressed. 3.What is the difference between a turtle & a tortoise? turtles have to be in water to eat. tortoise eat on land. Turtles are very good swimmers & have web feet.Tortoises do not like to be in water over their heads. 4.Can turtles drown? Yes. turtles need air to breath & if they get trapped under water for too long they will drown. 5.Which turtles bite? Do they all bite? snapping turtles most definately do, and mud turtles and soft shell turtles can get snapping when threaten, tho most species would rather withdraw into their shells. 6.Do turtles eat each other? Normally they do not. But snapping turtles have been known to eat smaller turtles when no other food was avaiable. Also when two turtles go after the same food the smaller turtle may loose his head if he get in the way.They should not be kept in the same tank. 7.How can you tell the males from the females? With red eared sliders the males have very long finger nails! It is different with each species. But usually the females are larger than the males. And the males have longer tails. 8.How can you tell if a females is going to lay eggs? She will become restless & start looking for a nesting site . She may dig several nest before she is satisfied. Turtles want to hide their nest from preditors & will take great care to disguise the nest. 9. Why don't turtles stay with their eggs & help them hatch? Turtles can not defend their nest. If they stayed with them it would be easier for the preditors to find them. So she hides the eggs the best she can & leaves. 10.Who are the preditors of turtles? Racoons are the #1 preditor. shunks & possiums also eat turtles . And some cats & dogs will eat them. Sea turtles have many preditors! Birds-crabs-& everything that swims. Not to mention the mammels that like to eat their eggs. Turtles are very high on the food chain. 11. Do turtle cry? Sea turtles shed tears when they leave the ocean to dig their nest.It is the only time a sea turtle will leave the ocean. The males never come ashore.
