SMITH & WESSON MODEL NO. 2 "ARMY" |
The Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 "Army"-This pistol was similar in appearance to the Model 1(2nd Issue). This model was extremely successful from a comercial standpoint, in that it was released just prior to the commencement of hostilities between the North and South. It offered one thing very few of the sidearms of the day could boast, placing Smith & Wesson at the forefront of the weapons market technology when it mattered most. It fired a .32 caliber rimfire metallic cartridge making it multi-shot and fast to reload, also the metallic cartridge made it fairly weatherproof. It was purchased in great numbers by departing troops, and it is rumored, that it was ordered in such great numbers that Smith & Wesson weren't able to keep up with the orders, thus making them wealthy and respected gunmakers among the surviveing rank and file soldiers, in many cases because of this weapon. Insuring them a loyal market for years to come. This revolver has a six shot non-fluted cylinder with a 6" barrel and rosewood grips. The metal finish was blued. It was manufactured from 1861 through 1874 with the total production for that period being 77,155. If any weapon deserves to be refered to as a secondary martial arm it would be this pistol. |
