Abstract :

Spirulina, a blue green alga, is a well recognized nutritional food world over. its efficacy in alleviating the vitamin A deficiency among preschool children has been reported by National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad. It can be easily cultivated with minimal training by all agriculturists who can augment their income during non productive months. Spirulina can grow even in brackish water or saline water. This makes it suitable for areas where water is found to be unsuitable for areas where is water is found to be unsuitable for cultivation of conventional crops. This provides an opportunity for year round employment in places otherwise having low employment potential. Spirulina thus grown can be distributed through Primary Health Centres to take care of the nutritional needs of the rural women and children. The cultivation and marketing can be organized by co operative means through suitably supported government schemes. The posters will provide conceptual elaboration of the theme and its relevance in sustainable development
