OCD Support Groups.

There is a wide variety of Support Groups/Clubs.
Especially online should you be able to find a Group which will meet your needs. While there are many more Clubs online than those listed on the 2 following pages, we tried to focus on the Clubs that stand out because of how many MEMBERS there are, how ACTIVE the Group is and who it is especially providing support for.
The Understanding OCD site does not take any responsibility for the content of the Groups listed. We are not responsible for their changing content.

Starting a Support Group.

If you are thinking of starting your own Support Group in your area, there are a few things you should consider:

  • Look for already available Groups. For starters you of course look into whether your area already has a functioning Group. No use in providing people with another Group when there is already 1 which can meet their needs.
If you really want to go ahead anyway, maybe you can talk to the organization of this Support Group and see if you can run either an extra session or add a session specifically tailored to a certain group. This way you will utilize the existing structure and create a stronger and larger Group where people can come to.
  • Starting a New Group. Your area might not have a Group and this means you will have to do all the work yourself. Inform yourself and see how close the nearest Group is and try and figure out if your area alone will provide sufficient members. A small Group isn't necessarily a negative thing, but remember that not everyone will be able to attend each meeting and not everyone will be comfortable to talk at all times. So having a average sized Group of around 15 people will create a balance.
  • You might be interested in G.O.A.L. a project by the OCFoundation.
The OC Foundation has a Video called: G.O.A.L. which shows you more about Starting, Structuring and Managing a Successful Support Group for OCD.

OCF: "The Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation (OCF) has produced a 22-minute video tape and a manual on how to start, structure, and conduct a G.O.A.L. (Giving Obsessive-compulsives Another Lifestyle) behavior support group for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). "
You will have to pay either $40 or $75, depending on whether you are an OC Foundation Member or not. But if you take starting a Support Group seriously, you can use all the help available.
