The New Tale Spins

Volume V-III

October 2001

Some time ago, I was contacted by the sister of Andy Brannan, Frances Vick.  Andy was one of the crew members lost in the attack on Marcus Island.  A few months ago I was contacted by Seth Allen, a nephew of Leslie Burril, another crew member lost in the attack on Marcus.  He tells me that Rebecca, Andy's wife at the time of his death, died in 2000.   Seth, who resides in Brookhaven, MS, is very interested in finding out all he can about his uncle.  He would love to hear from anyone who has any information about this attack and the men lost. Seth and Frances have been communicating and sharing information they have obtained from their families.  Seth will be sharing what he has with us so we can add it to our archives.  I will share anything we receive with all of you in later issues of Tale Spins.

We had 10 more copies printed of our book "A Chronicle - VP-14, VB-102 and VPB-102."  There are 9 available for anyone wanting a copy (Send a check for $20.00, made payable to Navy Squadron VB-102/14, A Chronicle, to Louise Thoman.  Be sure to let us know where you want the copy sent.)

Doug Hart's daughter, Mary Maggay, informs us that Doug is doing well.  He turned 80 on 9/15.  He is now living in a specialized care facility, being well cared for.  They look forward to our Tale Spins which Mary reads to him.

I have been urging you, for years, to voice your memories, let them be recorded.

NOW HEAR THIS:

STEPHEN E. AUSTIN, THE FAMOUS AUTHOR OF D-DAY, CITIZEN SOLDIERS AND MANY OTHER BOOKS, IS ACTIVELY RECRUITING ORAL HISTORIES, MEMORIES, DIARIES, AND EVEN LETTERS YOU SENT HOME, FROM ANYONE WHO SERVED IN THE PACIFIC DURING WWII.  HE IS PREPARING TO WRITE A BOOK, SIMILAR TO "CITIZEN SOLDIERS", ABOUT THE MEN WHO SERVED IN THE PACIFIC.

(See page 3,  message to the Veterans of the Pacific War from Dr. Ambrose)

I will be sending him a copy of our book and any other personal notes you have sent me over the years. We want our Squadron WELL represented in this book about OUR war.

Chat with your family, grandchildren, anyone who can record ANYTHING YOU WANT TO REMEMBER ABOUT THOSE DAYS -  living conditions, letters home, feelings, incidents, fights with fellow airmen, ANYTHING.  Just do it.  Nephews and sisters like Seth and Frances are examples of how important  your history is to your family.  Be sure to share your mementos of those years with someone who cares.  Explain the value of each thing and identify the people who served with you.  If you have no one to leave it to, send it on to me so it can be added to the Squadron archives.

We will have more information on the Boston 2, 2002 reunion for you in the next TALE SPINS which is due out in January or February.  The dates will be SEPTEMBER 12, 13, 14, 15, leaving in the morning of the 16th.  The hotel will be the beautiful Westin Waltham.  The price will be $109.00 + tax, per room.  Our banquet will be held there in the hotel.  We are planning evenings to be free so you can spend leisurely dinners, time, with friends.  We are planning short touring days which will include lunch, also working for tours that require a minimum of on/off buses and time to rest.

Until the next issue, STAY HEALTHY.  We are looking forward to seeing you in Boston.

Friendship, what would we all do without it.

Louise Thoman, Editor
