Now if this isn't symbolism, I don't know what is. The cross and Jesus are definate symbols of Christianity. The women at the bottom are like everyone who follows Jesus. It also takes place in just a random place in a field. Also, one of the women is wearing you, which is symbolic of the Virgin Mary. She is a definate symbol in Christianity as well. This image is just bursting with symbols and Gauguin used them in a nice balance with the surroundings. He involves a good bit and balance of space as well.
