According to Greek mythology, there was once a man called Narcissus who was foretold he would have a long and happy life if he never laid eyes on his own features. His mother, hearing this, hid all mirrors and shiny objects from Narcissus, but one day, he happened to chance upon a stream, and he bent down to get a drink, and the reflection in the water was so beautiful to his mind, that he instantly fell in love with it, and would sit, from then on, pining away for the reflection. A beautiful nymph, Echo, fell in love with the man she found staring at his reflection, but Narcissus never noticed the nymph, because he was so absorbed in the image of himself that he saw in the water. The term "Narcissism" derived from this, to mean any sort of excessive vanity, self-centricity, and self-love...
*Narcissism, it has since been researched further, is not truly an over-inflated ego. In fact, most true Narcissists are extremely lacking in basic self-confidence, and the reason they seem so egocentric is because they constantly build themselves up to others, hoping the others will agree. Narcissists, in fact base their entire self-image on what others think of them, and will do anything necessary to impress others. Narcissists are very fragile individuals who hang on every word told them, and can be extremely upset when they are crticized. Many Narcissists become violent when openly criticized to a point that they cannot defend themselves. If one you know is Narcissistic, or simply seems to have an over-inflated ego, but can become hurt or irratable easily, you might want to research Narcissism and how to deal with it.
All personal websites are pure narcissism. A person tries to flaunt his or her own good points in the hopes that the world (truthfully, the three people who come to visit his site) will be impressed. So that's what I'm doing...
