Whenever you are
traveling the shores of Michigan. You are not very
far away from a lighthouse. There are at least 116 on
the shores of Michigan alone. Not counting
neighboring states and Canada. Many of them are
museums and some of them are privately owned. Many of
them are still active today, maintained by the U.S.
Coast Guard. Others are in various states of decay.
There are organizations that are doing a very good
job in trying to renovate them. But it's a very big
job and it takes many years of hard work to
Through our travels around the state, we
have seen several of them. They tell a story of
loneliness and happiness. They also give you a
feeling of strength and power. Without these lights
many more people would have died on the Great
The keepers of old and their families have
to be commended for taking on such a job. They faced
many hardships in their daily lives. Sometimes they
wouldn't see another person for months at a time.
Many of them raised their own food, never knowing
when supplies would be brought to them. But all the
while, they kept the light shining for the ships on
the Great Lakes!
