These men settled Nueva Galicia (parts of Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas) from the Iberian Peninsula after Guzman’s ex- pedition in 1530. As you can see it was the custom to take the prominent surname of a parent or grandparent and not necessarily the surname of their father.

Bazan, Alonso de - Had settled in Nueva Galicia but moved back to Mexico City with his wife Francisca and father in law in 1535. Had at least two sons by the names of don Andres de Bazan and don Antonio Velazquez de Bazan. His wife was the sister of Diego Velazquez the Govenor of Cuba. Dorantes de Carranza, Andres - Reached Florida with Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528. They were planning to settle in North Florida. Their women headed back to Cuba in their ships leaving the hundred or so men on shore. They sailed in makeshift boats along the gulf. Most were lost at sea while several of the boats reached Texas. Gradually their number dwindled to 4. They were Dorantes, Alonso del Castillo Maldonado, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and Estevanico. They wandered through west Texas for several years moving from tribe to tribe. Around the summer of 1535 they reached the Rio Grande. They traveled up the Rio Grande into New Mexico and through the gap in the Mimbres Range. Eventually coming out on the upper waters of the Gila in Arizona. They then turned southwestward, meeting up with Guzmans' men in 1536. Genealogical reference on Dorantes de Carranza. The following is the account of Cabeza de Vaca in his own words: The Journey of Alvar Nuņez Cabeza De Vaca (1542) Gomez, Juan - Settled in Villa Alta. Guzman, Rodrigo de - left Spain with his brother Esteban and their father. Their father died en-route. Settled in Mexico City but left for Spain in 1544.
