Red Wing News - January 2001

1\31 The Wings played great in the first and third period, but in the second they allowed 3
odd-man goals and lost 1-3 in New Jersey. Scoring was McCarty. Ozzy played great, it was
also Shanny's 1000th game. Next up: at Columbus tonight.

1\27 The Wings started slow but tightened defensively in the second to top the Ducks 3-2.
Scoring were Brown(sh), Yzerman, and Fedorov. Next up: at New Jersey on Tuesday.
It looks like Mike Vernon will be staying in Calgary as he just signed an extention
through 2002.

1\25 Milestones were reached in Detroit's 4-3 win over the Predleys. Steve Yzerman got two
helpers moving him into a tie with Phil Esposito for 6th place on the all-time points list
with 1,590. Larry Murphy played in his 1600th game, second all time (NHL) to only Gordie Howe
who played 1767. Marty Lapointe got his 17th goal, a new career high. Also scoring were
Dandenault, Verbeek, and Ward. Next up: Anaheim at the Joe on Friday.

1\22 Detroit ended it's 12 day 5 game road trip with a second straight loss, this time 2-4 in
Calgary. Mike Vernon pretty much shut the game down after allowing the Wings to go up 2-1 in
the second. There are rumors he will be back in Detroit before the trade deadline. Scoring were
Shanahan and Larionov. Next up: Nashville at the Joe on Wednesday.

1\21 The Wings just couldn't muster any offense last night and lost a couple bad bounces to
the Oilers 1-2. Scoring was Verbeek. Next up: at Calgary tonight.

1\17 Brendan Shanahan led the way with a goal and three helpers as the Wings beat the Canuck's
4-2. Also scoring were Fedorov, McCarty, and Dougie Brown. Jiri Fischer sat this one out. Next
up: 3 days of rest in sunny Phoenix then game 4 of the 5 game road trip at Edmonton late
Saturday night.
Sergei Fedorov mad the World All-Star team but Shanny and Yzerman were snubbed by the North
American team. That's OK with them though. They're looking forward to the rest.

1\16 From the AP, "SACRAMENTO, Calif. --
The Detroit Red Wings used a different plane Tuesday to fly to Canada hours after their
chartered jet lost engine power and made an emergency landing in Sacramento.
None of the 46 passengers was injured Monday night during the unscheduled landing on a flight
from San Jose to Vancouver, British Columbia.
The loss of power in an engine on the DC-9 prompted calls of a "major in-flight emergency."
The crew was able to restart the engine midair and the plane safely landed at Sacramento
International Airport around 9:45 p.m. Monday, airport spokesman Gregg Weissenfluh said. The
team planned to charter another jet on Tuesday to continue road their trip, Weissenfluh said.
The Red Wings' beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 on Monday and play at Vancouver on Tuesday.
"They're experienced travelers, and everyone's fine," Red Wings spokesman John Hahn said.
"It's just an inconvenience that we had to land and stay the night here. We still play Vancouver
tomorrow." Damn.

The game was bloody and dirty (the Wing's bleed, the Sharks were dirty.) It started with
Brian Marchment taking a knee to knee hit on Tomas Holmstrom to which darren McCarty responded
to immediately. The fight was a draw, but McCarty was cut badly above the eye. I'd be very
surprised if Marchment didn't get suspended for the hit. The bastard did the same thing to
Yzerman a couple years ago. Later on, Jiri Fischer was jumped by Scott Thornton for a stick he
took in the back earlier which drove him face first into the boards. No penalty was called, so
Thornton took matters into his own hands. Jiri was cut very bad and bleed all over the place.
Jiri is quoted as saying, "Of course it hurt. He hit me right in the eye, I was dripping blood
right away." Both he and Holmstrom returned to the game.
Steve Yzerman continues to dominate with highlight reel goals. He had the game winner and
Marty Lapointe had the first two. Chris Osgood had another great game, stopping 39 of 41 shots,
a dozen of which were unbelievable. Detroit is only three points behind St. Louis now.
Next up: at Vancouver tonight.

1\14 Nick Lidstrom was the leading vote getter among World team defensemen for this year's
All-Star game in Colorado. Only starters have been anounced, but it's likely Shanahan, Fedorov,
and Yzerman will also play.
Chris Chelios is doing very well and could be back two or three weeks earlier than expected.

1\13 Detroit began it's 5 game, 12 day road trip with a great performance in Dallas 3-2. Chris
Osgood played his best game of the season making unbelievable stops in the third period. Scoring
were Fedorov, Shanahan, and Lapointe. Next up: at San Jose on Monday.

1\11 Scotty Bowman was awarded the Lester Patrick award for outstanding service to U.S.A. hockey.

1\10 The Wings outshot the 'Yotes 41-15, but Sean Burke was stellar, stopping all but two shots as
the teams skated to a 2-2 tie. The WIngs really played a very strong game and would have had six
or seven goals against a lesser net minder. Scoring were Fedorov and Maltby. Next up: a mofo of a
road trip beginning Friday in Dallas.

1\8 Steve Yzerman is playing like he's 25 again, this time blowing by Ray Bourque to net the OT
winner at the Joe to deny Colorado it's comeback 4-3. Scoring were Duchesne, Maltby(sh), and
Yzerman(2). Next up: Phoenix at the Joe tomarrow night.
Maxim Kuznetsov will have a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination today on his left
knee to check the seriousness of his injury. Chris Chelios is skating regularly and is on schedule
for a February return.

1\6 Minnesota reached in their bag of tricks and beat the Wings in OT 3-2. Scoring was McCarty(sh)
and Verbeek. Shanny got a 10 minute misconduct for unsportsmanlike that was very questionable and
put the Wings down two men. Next up: Colorado on Sunday night.

1\5 The Wings overcame a Dallas goal at :40 of the first to win 4-2 Scoring were Verbeek(2),
Brown, and Lapointe. Verbeek's two goals moved him into 25th all time (508 passin Jean Beliveau.)
Next up: at Minnesota on Friday.

1\1 From ESPN, "Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman put his team on the board, and he made sure
they walked away with a win. After the Kings' Rob Blake tied the score at 1 with a power-play
goal in the last minute of the game, Yzerman scored with 4.3 seconds left to give host Detroit
the win Sunday night. Wings goalie Chris Osgood made 21 of his 22 saves to ensure the victory."
I couldn't have put it better myself. Ozzie was awesome as was Igor Larionov. Next up: Dallas
at the Joe on Thursday.
