Red Wing News - May 2002

5\30 Dominic Hasek got the shutout to lead the Wings to a 2-0 win in Colorado. It was a near
perfect game for Detroit. Scoring were Shanahan(on a botched hot dog play from Roy) and
McCarty. Series is tied 3-3. Game 7 is Friday night.

5\28 The Avs beat the Wings 2-1 in OT. The Wings are in a major scoring funk that must be
righted because Colorado leads the series 3-2. Steve Yzerman scored. Game 6 is Wednesday in
Denver.

5\25 The Wings dominated for the first two periods once again, but this time the Avs owned
the third and won 3-2. Igor Larionov made his return after missing a few games with an
unspecified leg injury. Scoring were Fedorov(sh) and Hull. Series is tied 2-2. Game 5 is
Monday night at the Joe.

5\23 With the exception of some early penalty trouble, the Wings played a perfect defensive
game and eventually the goals came. Wings win 2-1 in OT. They peppered Roy with 42 shots.
Scoring were Robitaille and Olausson(gw). It's Freddy's first playoff goal since 1992. Hasek
assisted on Freddie's OT winner, the first time in NHL playoff history that a goalie has
assisted on an overtime goal. Wings lead 2-1. Game 4 is Saturday afternoon.

5\21 Patrick Roy was horrible, but the Wings were worse, losing in OT 4-3. The Wings played
catch-up the entire game and were o-fer on the power play. Also, they are getting little
contributions from the big names. I'm sure they'll bounce back, but they were outplayed
badly by the Avs. Scoring were Devereaux, Maltby(sh), and Lidstrom. Series is tied 1-1.
Game 3 is tomarrow at Colorado.

5\18 It was a slow start but the Wings kept pace. It was tied 2-2 after two periods on goals
by Holmstrom and Hull. In the third period, Darren McCarty came unleashed and scored his
first career hat trick to lead the Wings to a 5-3 win in Game 1. Wings lead 1-0. Game 2 is
Monday night at the Joe.
Steve Yzerman looked beat up after this one. Hopefully his new shoulder injury isn't
serious enough to keep him out. He did finish the game.

5\17 The Wings have signed forward Henrik Zetterberg for next season. He could earn up to
$1 million with bonuses. If he doesn't make the team, he has the option to return to Sweden.

5\16 Colorado beat San Jose 1-0 last night and will be coming to Detroit for Game 1 on
Saturday. Igor Larionov is expected to be back into the lineup.

2nd Round wrap up:

(1)Detroit over (4)St. Louis 4-1 (3)Carolina over (8)Montreal 4-2
(2)Colorado over (3)San Jose 4-3 (4)Toronto over (7)Ottawa 4-3

5\14 The Wings are bringing in forward Henrik Zetterberg to observe the playoffs. He will not
play. Not this year anyway. He won the Gold Puck award as Sweden's top player in the Elite
League and international competition. Peter Forsberg and Marcus Naslund are former winners. He
also 7 helpers during last week's World Championships, aiding Sweden to a Bronze medal. "He
produced as many points as Los Angeles forward Zigmund Palffy and one fewer than Washington
superstar Jaromir Jagr."(Freep) During his regular season, he scored 10 goals and 22 assists
in 48 games. He added an astonishing 7 goals and 12 points in 8 playoff games. He'll make a
strong arguement for a roster spot in Detroit next year.

5\11 Brendan Shanahan's two goals and four points led the Wings to a 4-0 win in Game 5. Also
scoring were Fischer and Holmstrom. Wings win the series 4-1. The Western Conference Finals
won't begin until Thursday or (more likely)Saturday against San Jose or Colorado.

5\10 Steve Yzerman's early third period goal made St.Louis's come back bid moot as the Wings
skate on to a 4-3 victory. Also scoring were Shanahan, Fischer, and Holmstrom. Wings lead 3-1.
Game 5 is Saturday.
Igor Larionov did not dress for game 4 because of an undisclosed leg injury. Jason Williams
filled in.

5\8 The Wings were absolutely lit up by the Blues 6-1. Hasek was pulled after the fifth goal and
not a damn thing went right after Pavel datsyuk tied it at 1-1 early in the first. Wings lead
2-1. Game 4 is Thursday.

5\4 The Blues came on late, but couldn't overcome the three goal hole they put themselves in and
the Wings win it 3-2. Scoring were Yzerman, Hull, and Robitaille. Wings lead 2-0. Game 3 is
Tuesday night.
Rumor has it that after the playoffs, Steve Yzerman will undergo the same knee reconstruction
surgery that Chris Chelios had last year. That would likely keep him out until January. Cheli
said it took ten years off his legs.

5\3 Dominic Hasek made 23 saves, many were spectacular, to lead the Wings past the flat Blues
2-0. Scoring were Datsyuk and Hull(sh). Wings lead 1-0. Game 2 is Saturday afternoon.

5\1 As expected, Nick Lidstrom and Chris Chelios are finalists for the Norris Trophy. It is the
first time since 1969 that teammates have been finalists for the award. Lidstrom won it last
year and Chelli won it in 1989, 1993, and 1996. Rob Blake is the third finalist. Lidstrom is
also a finalist for the Lady Byng.

5\1 First round recap:

(1)Detroit over (8)Vancouver 4-2 (8)Montreal over (1)Boston 4-2
(2)Colorado over (7)L.A. 4-3 (7)Ottawa over (2)Philly 4-1
(3)San Jose over (6)Phoenix 4-1 (3)Carolina over (6)New Jersey 4-2
(4)St. Louis over (5)Chicago 4-1 (4)Toronto over (5)NY Islanders 4-3
