10\31 With Hasek out with the flu the Wings had no choice but to play Manny Legace and he 
played terrific. Wings walk 5-2. Manny Legace has not lost a single game since last December 
and is 13-0-2 in that span. Scoring were Dandenault, Datsyuk, Shanahan, Yzerman, and Draper(en). 
Pavel Datsyuk's goal was his first ever. He added an assist to make it his first multi-point 
game as well. Next up: at Dallas tonight.

10\28 In what was a rare boring game, the Wings blanked the Predleys 1-0. Steve Duchesne scored
the lone goal. Manny Legace left during the 2nd period on a stretcher with a neck injury. Next 
up: at Carolina on Tuedsday.

10\27 It's hard to win a game when you're shorthanded for 26 odd minutes and the Wings didn't. 
They lost to the Stars 5-3. You can bet the officials had money on Dallas. Steve Yzerman just 
about got tossed because he let referee Mike Hasenfratz have it. Scoring were Robitaille, 
Lidstrom and Kuznetsov. Next up: at Nashville tonight.

10\25 The Wings played their best overall game of the season while dominating Edmonton 4-1. 
Scoring were Fedorov, Robitaille, Holmstrom, and Devereaux. (Freep)Brendan Shanahan rode his 
scoring streak to nine games, with his seventh assist among 15 points, as he was being scouted 
as a candidate for Team Canada by executive director Wayne Gretzky. Shanny continues to lead 
the league in goals and scoring. Lidstrom added three assists. Next up: Dallas at the Joe on 
Friday.

10\21 Luc Robitaille netted the game winner versus his former team and helped the Wings to a 3-2 
victory. Also scoring were Hull and Fedorov. Next up: Edmonton at the Joe on Wednesday.

10\19 From the Free Press: "In the final minute, in 23 thrilling seconds, the Red Wings turned a
                    loss into a tie and a tie into a victory. The final score: Detroit 3,
                    Philadelphia 2. The final scene: bedlam. Have there been
                    happier hockey fans on an October night than the ones who
                    danced out of Joe Louis Arena on Thursday? Hardly. 

                    Here were their Wings, the pride of professional sports in
                    Detroit, trailing by a goal as the clock counted down. Here was
                    coach Scotty Bowman pulling goaltender Dominik Hasek, so a
                    sixth skater could attack. And here, with 40.1 seconds left, was
                    Sergei Fedorov ripping a high shot into the net. 

                    Game tied, 2-2. 

                    Bowman called time-out. He said he only wanted to rest his men,
                    especially defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who played 28:07,
                    more than any other skater in the game. He said he had no
                    intention of trying to win. Not then, anyway. But win then . . . that's
                    exactly what the Wings did. 

                    Here was captain Steve Yzerman chugging with the puck as the
                    clock counted down. Here was Brett Hull, slipping into shooting
                    position, as he has done so many times in his stellar career. And
                    here, with 17.8 seconds left, was Hull ripping a shot high into the
                    net from almost the same spot Fedorov did. 

                    Game won, 3-2. 

                    The fans roared until the final horn. And beyond. 

                    "That," Hull said, "was loud."
Robitaille scored the first goal. Next up: L.A. at the Joe on Saturday night. 

10\17 The Wings survived a third period defensive collapse to beat the Blue Jackets 4-3. 
Scoring were Dandenault (100th career point), Shanahan, Robitaille, and Federov. Next up:

10\16 Darren McCarty will go on the I.R. and miss about a month after clipping skates with a 
New York player on Saturday and spraining his MCL.

10\14 Detroit came from behind to tie the game 4 times and eventually won it in OT over Chris 
Osgood and the Islanders 5-4. Scoring were Fedorov, Hull, Robitaille(game tyer with :09 
remaining in the third), and Yzerman(2) with the game winner in OT. Next up: Columbus at the 
Joe on Tuesday. 

10\13 The Wings rebounded from a bad first period to beat Slava kozlov and his Buffalo Sabres
4-2. Scoring were Robitaille, Shanahan(1+1en), and Olausson. Next up: a visit to Chris Osgood
on Long Island tonight.
   Due to minor medical reason, Mickey Redmond will stay at home for some road games this 
season. Taking his place in the broadcast booth for those games will be Doug Brown.
   With his two assists Friday night, Nick Lidstrom reached 571 points for his career, moving 
into seventh on the career list past Reed Larson, who played for Detroit from 1976-77 to 
1985-86. Lidstrom also becomes the Red Wings' career points leader for defensemen. 

10\11 The Flames capitolized on two bogus extended 5-3 powerplays and beat the Wings 4-2. 
Scoring were Draper and Shanahan. Next up: Buffalo at the Joe on Friday.
    Forward Ladislav Kohn signed a one-year contract, and the Wings sent him to Cincinnati.
His situation is unique and he may return to Europe this year.

10\7 Hasek made 29 of 30 saves and helped the Wings to a 4-1 win in Vancouver. Scoring were 
Shanahan(sh), Yzerman, Fedorov, and Fischer. Next up: Calgary at the Joe on Wednesday.

10\5 The Wings got lucky and thwarted a San Jose comeback, winning 4-3 in OT. Brendan Shanahan 
had a hat trick, two of the goals were shorthanders including the game winner. Brett Hull also 
scored. Next up: at Vancouver on Saturday.

10\3 From the A.P.:
    TORONTO -- Paul Coffey retired Wednesday, ending a 21-year NHL career in which the star 
defenseman won four Stanley Cups.
  Coffey, 40, leaves the NHL as one of its most decorated defensemen. He was a 14-time All-Star 
who played on three Canada Cup winners and won three Norris trophies as the NHL's best 
defenseman.
  With 1,531 points, he is second only to Ray Bourque in career scoring by a defenseman and is 
the leading career playoff scorer among blueliners with 196 points in 194 games.
  "I was able to play on championship teams both in the NHL and at the international level 
alongside so many players, and I will remember these experiences forever," Coffey said.
  He won Stanley Cups at Edmonton in 1984, 1985 and 1987 and then in 1991 with Pittsburgh.
  He joined the league with Edmonton in 1980. In addition to Pittsburgh, he played for Los 
Angeles, Detroit, Hartford, Philadelphia, Chicago, Carolina and Boston.
  He was waived by the Bruins last season after 18 games.

  Darren McCarty and Jesse Wallin will start the season on the I.R. The team roster is down to 
23 with no surprises. Pavel Datsyuk and Jason Williams made the team.

10\1 Igor Larionov and Steve Brule scored to salvage a 2-2 tie in Toronto last night. The Wings 
finish the exhibition season 4-2-1-1. Next up: at San Jose on Thursday night. 
  Yuri Butsayev didn't make the trip to Toronto because he didn't have identification when he 
arrived at the team plane. "He changed suits," Scotty Bowman said.
  In an effort to get the roster down to 23 players the Wings sent Yuri Butsayev, Steve Brule, 
Ryan Barnes and Sean Avery to Cincinnati. Brent Gilchrist was put on waivers today as part of 
that effort.
