Shin Seiki Evangelion
Otherwise known as Neon Genesis Evangelion in the States, Shin Seiki Evangelion
has risen to become one of my all-time favorite series. Probably my "first" favorite, until
I saw Galaxy Express 999.
The story is absolutely excellent. I love a series that deals with matters of the mind, psychology,
and mental states. And Evangelion does just that. With lots of twists and mysteries, and the risqué
touch of religion, Eva has fulfilled my needs for a good anime series.
A thing I also liked. The fact that, Eva is portrayed by most to be a mecha vs. monster series, but
that is besides the point. Evangelion is a story mainly about the character, the pilots, the staff of NERV,
and their ties with the government. The drama is wonderful, with lots of character
development, and personal
anguish. The more down-to-earth to deranged situations are nice to see, and how the characters interact with one another.
My favorite character of the series, is Asuka Sohryu-Langley,
the redheaded pilot of Eva Unit 02. At first, she seemed like your typical ditzy bitch with a bigger than usual attitude problem.
And for the first few episodes, that's exactly what she is. But, character development takes effect eventually, and some positive(in my opinion, positive)
changes occur. You begin to see the real Asuka Sohryu-Langley, behind the false shell of bravado and confidence. You see a
little girl, tormented soul, and a needful persona. That was the Asuka that I liked, and that is the Asuka that I continue to
like.
Overall, my opinion of the series is very high. Had it not ended in such a hectic and tedious way, Shin Seiki Evangelion could still be
at that top spot where Galaxy Express lies right now. But, the series is now over, and there are no more chances for it to move back up. However,
the series holds a part of me which will not let this series fall below without at least some mention.
