Welcome to my Odell Lineage Page. I have been working on this line for quite some time now. This line is very difficult to follow as there were so many given names the same in every generation, and so close in proximity. Please do not take this information as Gospel, speculations; yes, but I am working on localities to try to match up families. I have searched in many places to try and find the information below. The Odell name is also spelled several different ways: O'Dell, Odle, Odale, and Odil. I believe the information below is correct, but if you find any discrepancies please email me. as I would like to have the most accurate information that I can have for everyone. I hope you find the information helpful to you, and do let me know if you have more that you would like to add. I would like to thank Alisa Hardman for sending me the researchings, Bible records, and newspaper articles of Wilma McGarry Smith, and to John Morrell for their tremendous contributions to this site. I hope you find the information helpful to you. Thank you for dropping by. Enjoy.

Please remember each bit of information found here, or elsewhere, must be researched and proved or disproved by weight of evidence by you, the researcher.

Descendants of Caleb Odell

*****************1st Generation*****************

Caleb Odell was born was born ca 1725 in Westchester Co., New York, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Odell. He married Alsea/Alice (possibly Newman, daughter of Samuel Newman). Alsea/Alice was probably born in New York as well. I do not have any further information on Alice, although I have seen other information naming her Alice Thorne and Alice Thompkins/Tomkins. Caleb was listed in the Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants with 380 acres of land. Caleb was on a list of men living in the lower district of Dunmore Co., Virginia under Capt. Joseph Bowman during the Revolutionary War, with a household of nine; five males and 4 females. He and Alsea executed several deeds between the Combs family. Caleb also witnessed a deed from Mathew Plumbley to his brother James Odell on 02 Mar 1768 in Frederick Co., Virginia.

Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1742-1775, Vol 2, pg. 172: Caleb Odle of Frederick Co. (Virginia), 380 A(cres) on Passage's Creek in Powell's Fort in said county. Surv. Robert Rutherford. Adj. Darby McCarty. 04 Aug 1766.

From the book "Over the Misty Blue Hills, by Ruth Webb O'Dell, pg. 121: Caleb O'Dell and wife Alice (A Newman-Thorne Connection) arrived in Shenandoah County with Abraham Denton and Samuel Newman by 1755 and located on the North Branch of Shenandoah River. Before 1760, he had purchased land on Passage Creek. He lived here until 1778, one of the fifteen originial justices of Shenandoah County, justice of the peace for Passage Creek Community and road overseer. In 1775, Caleb O'Dell was one of the signers for "The First Independant Company of Dunmore" and was one of a committee of eighteen to determine in 1775 war materials on hand. In 1778, Caleb O'Dell and his son, Isaac, sold their land on Passage Creek and he removed to Brush Creek in Washington, Greene Co., Tennessee, of which Cocke County was then a part. In 1782, he served on the first Grand Jury of Washington County which met in the log house of Charles Robertson. He purchased his land from Joseph Denton on Brush Creek and appears to have lived there until 1795, when his old friend, Colonel John Tipton witnessed for him in a sale of land. From the Odell Estate Papers.   Camp Pain, August 30 1836 written by Christian C. Elkins-From Alisa Hardman from the researchings of Wilma McGarry Smith: Dear Cuzzon I take the pleasure to inform you that we are all well at present and hope thse lines may find you all well. We are stationed three miles south of Roses (Rosses) Ferry under the foot of Brinards Ridge in the Cherokee nation. We have got plenty for our selves and plenty for our horses to eat and we are all satisfied. I swapped the mare that I started on at the Boatyard and got a very fine horse and gave thirty dollars to boot and then I swapped with Charles P. Shelly/Shelby at Athens and gave him fifteen and now I have the finest horse you ever seen. Daniel's mare got bad hurt but is getting better.

Father (Larkin) swapped his horse that he started on and got twenty dollars to boot. I don't think that we will have anything to do. I expect you hear a great deal of news which is not so. We expect to know in a few days whether we will have to go to Arkansas or not. The treaty will be in a few days and then we will know our doom. We haven't drew onpay yet but we expect to draw the 7th of next month. I want you to read this letter to Mother and tell her not to be uneasy for we are all well and hope these lines may find her in the same state of health. Thell her that as soon as I am discharged I will come home and I will wait on her like a son ought to do. Give my best respects to Andrew Odell and tell him to attend to the girls until I return. Give my respect to all the friends I heard that you had several weddings since I left home. I don't want you to let all the girls marry before I get home. Give my best respect of Nathan Morrell's family. Daniel (brother) sends his best respects to all of the girls. Jessee B. White sends his best respects to you all also. Elcaney Millard sends his best respects to you all. Timothy Millard sends his best respect to you all. I want you to write as soon as you get this letter and write how all of the friends is and mother and family is. Tell Alfred Millard that I want him to write to me as soon as he can. Some more at present but remember your friend until death.

Signed Christian C. Elkins.

Rebecca Elkins born ca 1804 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. She married Jefferson Washam. Jefferson was born ca 1802 in Washington Co., Virginia, the son of John Worsham and Martha "Patsey" Worsham. Their family was listed in the 1830 Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census records, pg. 328: (Jefferson Washhum) 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-30, 2 females under 5, and 1 female 20-30. Jefferson was listed in the 1837 Tax List for Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tennessee. Their family was also listed in the 1840 Chariton Co., Missouri Census records, pg. 314: (Jefferson Warshum) 2 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female 30-40. Jefferson died sometime after 1840, as he was not listed in the 1850 Census records. Rebecca and her family were listed in the 1850 Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census records, pg. 42, household 431 (Rebecka Washam), the 1860 River Bend Forge PO, Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census (Rebecca Washam), pg. 29, household 1028, and the 1870 Goodson Twp., Washington Co., Virginia Census, pg. 93 (Rebecca Worhsam), household 195, and the 1880 Goodson Twp., Washington Co., Virginia Census records, pg. 128 living with David B. and Dora Millard. In that census Rebecca was listed as Grandmother, so therefore, Dora is her granddaughter as David B. is the son of Rebecca's sister Martha, making her Davids Aunt. It appears we have a missing child for Jefferson and Rebecca, and it seems to be a female. Rebecca died ca 1887 in Washington Co., Virginia.
