Antoine Pépin dit Lachance was born in Le Havre, Normandy in 1636. He was the son of Andre Pépin (born about 1605), a merchant, and Jeanne Chevalier, of Bourville, Le Havre, in the diocese of Rouen.

Antoine arrived in New France in 1650. A few years later, on January 6, 1655, he and François Gaulin moved to a concession of 15 arpents (1 arpent equals about 192 feet) granted from Louis d' Ailleboust, on his lands at Coulonge, Quebec. The same day, they were given a concession of 200 arpents on other side of the St. Laurence River, in the seigniory of Lauzon. Apparently, they served on the governor's staff, possibly as domestic servants.

On November 11 1659, Antoine signed a marriage contract with Marie Teste (or Têtu -- which translates as stubborn or obstinate in English, a trait not lost in the Michaud side of the line), the daughter of Jean and Louise (Talonneau), of Salles-de-Villefagnan, not far from Angoulène. They were married thirteen days later, and settled in Sainte-Famille, the earliest parish on l'Île-d'Orléans, a small village that still commands a spectacular view of the entire Beaupré coast of the St. Laurence River.

An interesting side note is that their neighbors for a time were Pierre Michaud and his wife Marie (Ancelin). The families were close enough that, on March 26, 1670, Marie Ancelin Michaud served as godmother to one of Antoine and Marie's twelve children. In fact, Jacques Asselin (Marie Ancelin's brother) and Antoine had formed a partnership in back in 1659 to buy Denis Guyon's land in Orléans, so these families had strong ties from their earliest days on the island.

Antoine and Marie's sons settled in other areas of Orléans, most in St. Jean, exactly on the other side of the island (only five miles wide) from Ste. Famille. One son, Joseph, took the lot adjoining Antoine's, immediately to the south, next to the St. Jean church. He married Marguarite Fontaine in 1708 (not surprising, since four of the Lachance children married Fontaines!)
