"We're here to build kids, not tear them down."

4-H Shooting Sports

1997-98 marks my third year as the head coach of 4-H Carroll County Shooting Sports Organization's BB Gun Team. I'd love to tell of the teams accomplishments over the last 3 years. However, a part of me says that I'd be tooting my own horn. Yet, another part of me says I'm only tooting my kids horn. So if you would like to see our accomplishments, click here and I'll do the rest.

1995-96

Carroll County started it's shooting sports program in the midst of the 1995-96 school year. We stumbled all over ourselves but had allot of fun. As a matter of fact, most of us were using the wrong guns and we had never seen an actual tournament target until we arrived for our first tournament. We finished 27th in the state with about 65 teams participating. Without the help of our neighboring Coweta County's Shooting Sports Program, that would have been the end of our career.

1996-97

In 1996-97, the two coach's were better trained. We weren't rookies any longer and yet we let everyone know that we knew we didn't know it all and we still wanted to learn. We tried to instill this into our shooters as well. Our BB Gun team grew from 11 at the end of 1996 to 52 on the first day of 1997. We only owned FOUR guns! Letters in the paper, shooting contests at Fall festivals and allot of hard work helped us raise the funds to buy an additional 12 guns for the County and some parents bought their kids guns as well.

The spring of 1997 went beyond our wildest expectations!

1997-98

This was a year of "rebuilding". I know all coaches say that, at it's true, however it appears that we did have our high points here and there. Three of the seven that went to the International Championship could not return. Nevertheless, when new shoes are empty, someone always steps forward to fill them and this year was no exception. Carroll County Shooting Sports BB Gun team Won the Georgia State Championship in the Jaycee Division, came in 3rd in 4-H District Divison and 6th in the State 4-H Division. Several of our shooters took home individual trophies for individual efforts as well!

4-H is a nationwide youth education organization. The fastest growing segment of 4-H is the shooting sports program. This program is for boys and girls ages 8-18 and encompasses both team and individual competition and training with BB Gun, Air Pistol, Precision Air Rifle, Archery, and Shotgun. If you are interested in learning more about working with youth in today's Shooting Sports Program, contact your County Extension Agent, or even me. I'll help in any way that I can.
