Lapis has been used since before 3100 B.C. by the ancient Egyptians. They used the powdered blue stone for makeup. (Remember the blue eye shadow thing, they started it.)
The Egyptians also used it for medicine and in those great paintings they did.
As the Egyptians considered Lapis to be a sacred stone, they buried it with their dead to protect and guide them through the afterlife.
Afghanistan has been a site for the mining of lapis for 6000 years. Today it continues to be the major supplier of this beautiful blue stone.
