Description of Characters

Don Pedro is the prince of Aragon and guest at Leonatos home. Don Pedro is tries to play match maker in two different instances that help to lend chaos to the plot. He is very polite sort of gentleman and seems to be well respected. When Claudio tells him that he loves Hero, the Prince, knowing how Claudeo is, offers to woo Hero for him.

Don John is the bastard brother of Don Pedro. He resents Don Pedro and would do anything to try to hurt him, even if it means hurting innocent bystanders in the meanwhile. Don Jon is described by other characters in the story as being of melancholy and sour disposition, and wdescribes his own self as a villian Don jon devolopes two plots to try and break up Claudio and Hero. Through easedropping well placed lies and "mistaken idenities", Don Johns first little plot is unconsequential. When Don John hears that the misunderstanding he layed out is set back into order, Don John, along with Borachio, make up an even more decietful plot that intangles everyone into the drama of lies, slanders and broken hearts.

Borachio is Don Jons follower and co-conspiriter. Borachio follows Don John and for no reason that is made clear to us finds much pleasure in setting and pulling off the plots that him and Don John demise. He seems to be involved in a love affair with Margeret, one of Heros waiting gentlewoman. He does seem a rather horrible man, but I saw a change in him towards the end, and I cannot say is completely without a consiese or a heart.

Verges, Dogberry, and the Watches are the idiots of the play. As the town contables they are very simple minded but fancy themselves as being quite brave and clever fellows. They speak in ridiculous malaprobisms, and make fools of themeselves left and right. Dogberry is somewhat of their ringleader and leads there little cherade to protect their community at all cost. Although they are always making themeselves look terribly stupid, they only have good intentions and they never mean to hurt anyone. When they learn of Don John and Borachios plot, because of their stupidity, they don't realize what kind of information that they have. They don't tell Claudeo or Leonato on time before the wedding leaving Don Johns evil plot to take its course.

Leonato is the governer of Messina, Heros father and Beatrice's uncle. He is Hero's father and Beatrice's uncle. He feels much pride in his virtious daughter and is devastated when she is accused of being immodest. When she faints he wishes she rather die than impose such shame upon him and his name.

Hero is a modest, docile, bland, well-behaved blushing young daughter of Leonato. She and Claudeo seem to be the more boring couple in the story and they never really seem to be really in Love. When Hero is accused at the alter of being unfaithful she is so timid she does not even press her truth and faints to the ground.

Beatrice is the ever witty Lady Disdain, outspoken and opinionated niece of Leonato. Her and Benedick are involved in a "merry sort of war". Always ragging on each other in a sort of easy going way, but never the less hurting each others feelings. Both are cynical about Love. Beatrice is described by her uncle to mock all of her wooers out of suite. Her and Benedick are tricked into falling in love by a few well placed lies, causing them to realize how much they really cared for each other.

Benedick is the egotistical soldier who is the butt of all of Beatrice's jokes. He is the other involved in the "merry war". He is confident and thinks he is God's gift to women. He doesn't know it, but he is in love with Beatrice. It takes the tricky thinking of Don Pedro, the prince, to make him fall in love with Beatrice.

Claudio is the modest, valiant, and honorable young soldier who has just come back from the war. He imidiately falls in love with Hero. He is passive, and accords to anything the prince says. He seems neither sad, nor happy all the time.

Margaret is the sneaky maid to Hero. She is in love with Borachio, and complies with him and his effort to dishonor Hero before her wedding. It is possible that she did not know what she was doing when she dressed in Hero's clothes, but she may have. Her conscience could be overshadowed by her concentration on Borachio.
