Corps Covering Ancient Bones Site

The site where an ancient skeleton was discovered has been covered under tons of rock and dirt despite objections from scientists and a Pagan sect that worship Norse Gods.
The Army Corps of Engineers said Monday thatwork will be completed this week along the Columbia River shoreline near Kennewick in SouthEastern Washington.
The Discovery in 1996 of the 9,200-year-old skeleton, known as the Kennewick man,put the Army Corps of Engineers in the middle of a fight among scientists who want to study the site,IndianTribes that want to rebury the bones and a California Religious sect that claims the skeleton is an ancestor.
Now in a labratory,Kennewick man may be the earliest evidence of humans with Caucasian features in North America.
The Corps had pushed to bury the site to prevent erosion and artifact looting, but a group of scientists who sued for the right to study Kennewick man objected to the work.
However, neither they nor the Pagan sect,Asatru Folf Assembly, went to court to stop the work.
A lawsuit over ownership of the bones, among the oldest completeskeletons ever found in North America,is pending in U.S. District Court in Portland, Oregon.
Indian tribes contend the skeleton is that of an ancestor and must be promptly reburied under a Federal graves repatriation act.The Corps initially planned to turn the bones over to the tribes, prompting the scientist' lawsuit.
The archeologist who initially studied the bones said infection from a spear point wound likely contributed substancially to Kennewick Man's death.

The U.S. Department of Interior, the agency responsible for managament of the ancient skeleton, has sumitted a plan to study the bones beginning in Novenber at the Seattle museum. The remains cultural identity could be known by July 1999,according to the plan.
But the studies wont begin until Indian Tribes have a chance to conduct anohter Religious Ceremony with the bones.
And at all times during Kennewick mans physical examination, the ancient remains will be treated as a human ancestor deserving respect and consideration, the Interior Department said.
Tests would focus on the possible link between the ancient skeleton ans modern tribes that claim him as a ancestor and want him reburied.
The skeleton was found in July 1996 on land managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along the banks of the Columbia river. The remains were later determined to be one of the oldest near-complete skeletons found in North America.
Among the tests prescribed to begin in November are studies of the bones and the teeth, analysis of a stone point embedded in the skeletons pelvis and an exam that could yield information about Kennewick Mans health. If those tests dont show a cultural link to a modern people, the Government will turn to radiocarbon dating and DNA extraction.

Unexplained slamming doors.Disappearing tools.Misplaced voices and footsteps on the fourth floor of a 94 year old building. Its enough to give a crew of tough demolition workers the willies.
After six weeks of the frights.D.J.Demo President Ralph Unis is ready to hire a psychic to inspect the former department store.Rumors of a past suicide or murder on the floor are circulating.
"Its scary, this fourth floor," Unis said.
University of Pittsburg psychology professor Donald McBurney said fingering a poltergeist is an easy explaination when workers forget they moved their tools or tossed some boards.City historians and former store workers also cant recall previous spirit sightings.
But Timothy Latus of the Academy of Psychic Arts and Sciences says it's not surprising that a razing may raise spirits.
"Energy fields are only now being distrupted and tampered with," he said.

Witches may be next for apology

The Pope might soon add Witches and Heretics to the list of groups which theRoman Catholic Church has sinned. On March 8th 2000,he is to lead a penitential procession from the Basilica of Santa Sabina to Rome's Circus Maximus, and to call for forgiveness for the historic failings of the Church.
Along side the Jews,to whom the POPE has extnded his apologies, will be representatives of those whom the Inquisition tortured and killed for thei own beliefs.
The Inquisition was an ecclesiastical tribunal set up by POPE Gregory IX in 1233 to ferret out heretics.

Angry Africans hack head off sorcerer
ABIDIAN,7-9-1998 (C) REUTERS
Villagers in the Ivory Coast hacked off the head of a 60-year-old man, branding him a sorcerer and accusing him of killing a young boy by witchcraft,a newspaper reported on Thursday.
The daily LeJour said that two other people in the southern village of Godilehiry, were lynched over the boy's death it said.
The parents of 11-year-old Christophe Adou, who died without recieving medical help, consulted the boy's corpse to find a culprit,LeJour quoted villagers as saying.
The accused,Ameyoua Gossou, tried to disprove guilt by defying the dead boys coffin to knock into him if he was responsinble. It did-according to the newspaper.
He died after being attacked by a mob.
"In less than three months this village has seen 13 children die but we have had no revenge," one bystander was quoted as saying.
Villagers in Ivory Coast, the worlds largest cocoa producer, and other West African countries, often blame sorcery for deaths due to diseases ravaging the continent such a s malaria and AIDS.
West African countries officially discourage such superstitions. In similar incidents,Ivory Coast and Ghana saw a 1996/7 wave of lynchings of people accused of using magic to shrink other men's penises.

Maine Pipeline Project Unearths Paleo-Indian Site
ELIOT,Maine (AP)
Archeologists have catalogued artifacts from a Paleo-Indian site dating as far back as 12,000 years that was uncovered during a recent survey done on behalf of a natural gas pipeline developer.
The dig unearthed what may be the oldest historical find ever in the Eliot area. Its location has been kept secret to deter would-be looters.
Tools and other artifacts from the Paleo-Indian period were among objects found during the archeological survey.
Archeologists who found the site said people were known to be in the area during the Middle Archaic period, but their campsites were located close to water sources and most evidence has long since been buried in river flood plains.
Now that all artifacts have been removed, the line will go through the site.

Acheologists excavating an ancient settlement in northern Greece have discovered a burial ground containing about i,000 tombs,an archeologist said Friday.
The size of the site about 12 miles northwest of Salonica and its wide variety of artifacts could offer researchers important insights into village life during the sixth and seventh centuries BC,said archeologist Vassiliki Misailides.
"The tombs were very organized," Misailides said."People were buried side by side and there are very clear bounderies between each tomb."
Identified last year, the tombs contain copper, iron, gold jewelry and daggers alongside the skeletons, which will be studied by anthropologists and at the archeological museum in Salonica.
