"Dedicated to our funny little Chihuahua girl, Stinky Face,
who we adopted from the Ewing NJ shelter at the age of 15.
She left us for the Rainbow Bridge on June 28, 2004 at 16.5 years old.
I advocate the adoption of older dogs. The rewards are endless.
--Firewife

Every year, a shocking number of pets are discarded, abandoned, or abused. Fortunately, many rescue organizations are at work saving dogs, cats, birds, small furries and other animals. Most are non-profit groups run by volunteers and funded by concerned animal lovers.

Volunteers from all over the US (myself included) volunteer to drive dogs saved from shelters, puppymills, rescues, etc. who have been adopted by families far from the shelter. Rescue organizations are now putting the Internet to work for these unfortunate animals - educating the public and posting information about adoptable pets on-line.

Thousands of pets are saved and placed in loving homes each year - Thousands more are not as fortunate. Too many sweet, very adoptable animals die in shelters every day because of irresponsible and uneducated pet owners. The need is always urgent for Foster Families and Adoptive Families. A Dog's Best Friend Is A Responsible Owner.

! Please SPAY and NEUTER you Dogs and Cats! Please don't breed when thousands are killed every day because they couldn't find a good home fast enough. Please consider Fostering or Adopting a Rescued animal. If you can't Foster or Adopt, please remember most rescues and shelters depend on people like you to donate funds for medical care, for blankets and food and to donate your time to help where you can.

Another reason to adopt? Most pet stores acquire their puppies from puppy mills. I have learned that over 60% of puppies born in puppy mills die before they arrive at their destinations i.e. pet stores. Puppies and their parents are forced to live in horrendous conditions. Many never touch the ground and die in their cages withpout ever having a life beyond breeding. They suffer greatly at the hands of puppy mill owners who are more concerned about quantity of puppies than quality of puppies. The making of money with little regard to the puppies health and well being is the obvious goal. Please do your homework first before you obtain any pet.

Dog Education Links WEBSITE OWNERS PICK FOR DOG LOVERS EDUCATION! Be fully informed. Be part of the solution and not part of the problem. They deserve nothing less. Before you obtain a dog from anyone or anywhere, please visit this web site! If you are considering breeding or purchasing your dog (do please consider rescuing a dog that already needs a good home), please throughly read ALL the links. If you do not have time to do that much, you do not have time for dogs. If you want a purebred puppy, please do right by him or her, yourself, and your family, choose a good dog from a good breeder.

Where do Puppies come from? What is a Puppy Mill? NoPuppyMills.com is not here to say what is or isn't acceptable, although we most certainly have all of our own opinions. We are a site dedicated to education. The principle is simple - we educate you about the commercial dog industry and you decide what is acceptable and at what level you wish to become involved in the fight against puppy mills. NOTE: In PA, Lancaster is unfortunately home to many puppy millers making some calling Pennsylvania "the puppy-mill capital of the East Coast".

Top 10 Reasons You Should Consider a Rescued Dog! "Why on earth would anyone want to adopt a rescued dog? After all, aren't they like used cars? Who wants someone else's problems? If the dog is so wonderful, why would anyone give him away? If he was a stray, why didn't someone try to find him? I'd rather buy a puppy so I know what I'm getting, and besides they're so cute!" ... Rescue groups often hear a variation of this conversation. Many prospective dog owners are just not convinced that owning an older (i.e, 6 mo.+) "pre-owned" dog is better than buying a puppy. But there are a number of reasons why adopting a dog from a rescue that carefully screens and evaluates its dogs can provide an even better alternative. Here are the "Top 10 Reasons You Should Consider a Rescue."

Make Peace with Animals/International Greyhound Center Until recently, when racing Greyhounds finished their careers, the fate met by many was euthanasia or sale to research labs. One of the main activities of Make Peace with Animals is their Ex-Racing Dog Rescue Program. Through volunteers, they operate a successful greyhound adoption service. Greyhounds are elegant, intelligent animals that are known for their gentle nature. Despite the fact that they have never before been in a home, they take to it as if they've been waiting all their lives for the experience. Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue Nonprofit organization servicing Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware is dedicated to the rescue, care and adoption of Siberian Huskies and Siberian Husky mixes. Our goals are to place these dogs in loving homes and to educate people about the characteristics of this wonderful, yet often misunderstood, breed. Dachshund Rescue of Bucks County DRBC was originally founded to help dachshunds in the Bucks County, PA area; however, our need and our ability to help stretches from Delaware to Southern New York. DRBC helps dachshunds regardless of age, color, size or medical difficulty. DRBC is proud to sponsor a program we call Project Outreach. This program recognizes that so many dogs are homeless and helpless as they try to survive life on the streets of Trenton, NJ. Project Outreach helps feed these dogs until they can be spayed/neutered and placed in good homes. Donations of food, money and blankets are always needed. All donated funds go to offset our medical bills.

Pet Rescue of Mercer (NJ) Pet Rescue of Mercer is an all volunteer, not-for-profit animal rescue group based in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, NJ. PRM rescues neglected, abused, and abandoned animals from local shelters by finding quality homes for them. PRM strongly believes that euthanasia, as a solution to the problem of pet overpopulation, is wrong. It is a simple and archaic response that has no place in a humane society. Sadly, the animals that are being routinely destroyed in Mercer County NJ and around the country are not just the neglected or abused strays. Tragically, pets are routinely abandoned when families move, when landlords forbid animals, if the pet has costly medical problems, or when they simply fall out of favor. These are the animals we all need to take responsibility for. If you are an animal lover, put your love into action! Get Involved! Join Pet Rescue of Mercer. Contribute your time, money or expertise. Campaign for mandatory spay neuter laws. Become a voice for the voiceless! The owner of this site is a PRM volunteer and encourages all animal lovers to do what they can for local rescues and shelters.

Animal Allies, Titusville, New Jersey A non-profit advocacy organization that focuses on rescue, foster home-care, and adoption of homeless dogs and cats. Our volunteers care for animals that require extended care prior to adoption: the abused, sick, injured, orphaned or nursing. We address issues that affect owned and shelter populations, such as spay/neuter, animal health and community education. Our outreach program directly alleviates animal suffering and overpopulation, offering low-cost spay/neuter services, medical treatment, food, and other supportive services to owned pets in threatened circumstances. Our mission is to stop animal suffering. We offer our assistance wherever the need for spay/neuter, education, and supportive services is the greatest.

SOSDogs- Save Our Small Dogs In addition to the furbabies needing good homes, read what RESCUE is and what a rescued dog is, why are Dogs Given Up to Rescues, what to do if you can't keep your dog, How to Foster a small dog for a few days/weeks, esp in the Burlington and Camden County NJ area and more. We help find homes for Bichon Frises (working with the NJ Bichon Frise Club) , Yorkshire Terriers (national coordinator of Yorkie rescuers for Project BREED), Westies and Maltese. We also sometimes help find homes for other small breeds, like shih tzus. We work closely with other rescuers of our breeds in the area and all over the country.

LAST CHANCE RANCH!!! Last Chance Ranch is a non-profit, all volunteer Equine Rescue dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of abused and neglected horses in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. The Humane Society of the United States The Humane Society of the United States makes a difference in the lives of animals here at home and worldwide. The HSUS is dedicated to creating a world where our relationship with animals is guided by compassion. We seek a truly humane society in which animals are respected for their intrinsic value, and where the human-animal bond is strong.

WHAT MAKES NEW HOPE UNIQUE? ...
New Hope, often called the "Jewel of Bucks County", is an eclectic
river village community with unique charm, sophistication and beauty,
nested on the banks of the Delaware River and historic
Delaware Canal - surrounded by rural countryside and just
opposite historical, tourist friendly, Lambertville, New Jersey.

Approximately only 1.1 square mile, New Hope Borough enjoys a
rich diversity in her people, businesses, cultures and
her history. Long known as a haven for artists, the village
gained recognition as a theater town in 1939, when the
Bucks County Playhouse opened in a former mill overlooking the river.

From impressive art galleries, specialty shops, antiques, talented artisans,
gourmet restaurants historical landmarks, a working steam powered train,
a mule powered barge and an occasional ghost, New Hope continues to
thrive and spark interest from tourists worldwide.

Located in Solebury Township, New Hope is about one hour north-northeast
of the Central or downtown Philadelphia area, only 40 minutes from Princeton, New Jersey and
20 minutes from Trenton, NJ. Listed by American Style Magazine as the #12 destination
for the arts, the historic Bucks County village of New Hope is a quaint,
artsy community located along the banks of the Delaware River.

The oldest town in Solebury Township, New Hope is known for its
galleries, inns, restaurants, antique shops, boutiques, and specialty shops.
This scenic village offers miles of towpath for walkers and nature lovers as well as
canal barge rides, quaint streets, carriage rides, walking tours, etc.
No public transportation is available within town borders,
but accessibility to routes 202, 32, 232 and 263
and proximity to I-95 make New Hope convenient for commuters and visitors.

Originally called Wells Ferry and later Canby's Ferry and Coryell's Ferry,
New Hope was first settled in about 1715. The present community,
deriving its name from New Hope Mills (built there in 1790 after a fire had destroyed several other mills)
was founded by William Lathrop in 1900 and has gained fame as a refuge for painters,
writers, composers, and actors. New Hope and the New Hope-Lambertville area abounds in
fine crafts, antiques, specialty shops, fine arts, galleries and wonderful food.
It is crossed by a reconstructed section of the old Delaware Canal,
in operation 1831-58, now a tourist attraction with mule-drawn barges.

Founded in 1939 and one of the nation's oldest summer theatres,
the Bucks County Playhouse building itself was a mill dating from the 1780's and is a New Hope treasure.
The New Hope and Ivyland Railroad comprises 17 miles of track and a steam-powered train
and vintage passenger coaches that travel back into time.

Washington Crossing Historic Park is 8 miles southeast.
Everyone has seen the picture of Washington crossing the Delaware!
How many know the boat he is in was launched in Bucks County?
Who hasn't heard of Daniel Boone? Did you know he was born and spent his early years there?
More than one historian believes the Conestoga Wagon was the result of Bucks County ingenuity.
It was also an important link in the underground railroad.
This is certainly an area rich in history, beauty and unique sojourns!
