MILITARY: Rev. War in 1779 was appointed a member of the committee, juror and magestrate of Albemarle Co. Va. In 1791 was appointed a magistrate and served as Sheriff in 1807.

OCC: in 1773 he was employed by Thomas Jefferson for the next 3 to 4 yrs. while Thomas Jefferson was president.
In 1762, Thomas Garth bought 450 acres on Indian branch of Buck Island Creek from Samuel Taliaferro. In 1770, he brought from John Lewis 1000 acres on Blue Run not far from Barboursville. In 1779, he bought 1000 acres of Lewis estate on Ivy Creek, and continued his purchases in that section, till he owned all the land stretching from near the Staunton Rd. Opposite Lewis's place, to the forks of Mechum's and Moorman's Rivers. On this tract he resided until his death. He was a magistrate in 1791 and a sheriff in 1807.
My line is Mildred and John Fretwell. Mildred and John's home was called "Fairfield". Their neighbors were Thomas Crenshaws and Richard Gaines, brother-in-laws to John. Mortimer D. Gaines, son of James Gaines of Culpeper was visiting or living in Richard Gaines' home. He met Emily Crenshaw Fretwell and married her in 1822.
