The
Raiders are the only NFL team to have played
in the Super
Bowl in three different decades. The 60"s,
70's and 80's
having won three World titles in an eight
year span.
The Raiders
first Super Bowl title came after 6 heart breaking attempts. The Raiders
lost 6 AFC Championship games to eventual Super Bowl Champions: New York
Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Colts, Miami Dolphins and twice to
the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Raiders
first World Championship was a decisive victory over the NFC Champion Minnestos
Vikings, who came into the Super Bowlas heavy favorites. The Raiders dominated
the Vikings on their way to a 32-14 victory and John Madden's first and
only victory as the Raiders head coach.
The Raiders
second World Championship was won against the NFC Champion Philadelphia
Eagles. Once again the Raiders were considerable underdogs after entering
the playoffs as an AFC wildcard. The Raider defense dominated the game
and the Raiders won handily with a 27-10 victory over the Eagles. The Raiders
were the only Wild-Card Super Bowl Champion until the Denver Broncos victory
over the Green Bay Packers in
Super Bowl
XXXII.
The Raiders
third World Championship was won against the NFC Champion Washinton Redskins,
and once again the Raiders were
heavy underdogs
even after decisive play-off wins against thier AFC opponents. The Raiders
handed the Redskins a humiliating 38-9 victory over the NFL's highest scoring
offense during the regular season.
The Raiders
three world titles came against heavily favored teams, but came away dominating
all three games by a combined score of 97 - 33. The Raiders Super Bowl
dominance was characteristic of the never say attitude that has existed
for 4 decades.
