Virus Databases

Let's say you have a virus or at least the name of a virus and you want to find out more about it. Well, there's a bit of a problem, different products often use different names for the same virus. What do you use to find out the name your favourite scanner uses?

And then you can use one of these databases to find a description of what that virus does.

The Common Malware Enumeration may be able to help you find information about the malware you're dealing with.

The WildList Organization happens to be a great place to go to find out what viruses are in the wild, by the way, just in case you wanted to gauge the possibility that your scanner might be false alarming

And in the relatively likely event of a hoax, try the Computer Virus Myths Homepage maintained by Rob Rosenberger or the CIAC Hoaxbusters page.
