LEE 68, MOUNT VERNON 58
Davis makes the most of his game-high 20
by Matt DeMazza. Special to the Washington Post
It was an impressive performance for Lee's Mark Davis to score a game-high 20 points to lead this team to a 68-58 victory over host Mount Vernon. But what was more impressive was when he scored most of those points.
The 6-foot-2 junior, who plays both guard and forward, scored nine points in the final two and a half minutes of the first half and 10 in the fourth quarter as the Lancers improved to 2-2.
"I felt that my team needed me and I stepped it up,: said Davis, who also grabbed six rebounds. "But our bench players contributed a lot to the game."
Lee's bench was indeed a factor, outscoring the Major's reserves, 28-18. Senior guard Omar Philmore scored 14 points, while Christian Vick and Chris Goodin scored eight and six respectively, for Lee.
One key to the win for the Lancers was a run at the end of the first half. After Tunde Fadahunsi gave the Majors a 22-21 lead, Davis responded with a fast-break layup and a three-pointer. He then hit two jumpers to close out the half for a 34-27 lead.
But Mount Vernon (3-1) responded by outscoring the Lancers 13-4 to open the third quarter. Much of that run was sparked by the play of 5-4 senior point guard Neal Lewis. Lewis, who finished with 13 points, 5 assists and 4 steals, left the game early in the fourth quarter with an ankle sprain.
Without Lewis to handle the ball, Lee turned up the defensive pressure and forced several key turnovers that resulted in a 15-6 run to close the game.
"It was a good win," Lee Coach Mike Harris said. "We're a [young] team, but we responded well to the challenge."
Foul shooting figured prominently near the end. Lee, which converted 10 of 16 free throws for the game, was 4 for 4 down the stretch. Conversely, Mount Vernon, which made good on just 3 of 8 for the game, was 2 for 5 late in the game.

Lee (2-2)  --  Davis 20, Jackson 8, Sapp 10, Vick 8, Goodin 6, Philmore 14.
Totals 28 10-16 68.

Mount Vernon (3-1)   --  Fadahunsi 13, Lewis 13, Pearson 14, Coggins Lyons 8, Carter 10.
Totals 24 3-8 58.

Halftime: Lee, 34-27.

Three-point goals: Lee 2 (Davis 2); Mount Vernon 7 (Lewis 2, Fadahunsi 3, Pearson 2).
