CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Almost Grown Sons - Pets

Back at the farm; it was wintertime and they were having trouble with one of the snowmobiles; there weren't enough men around (at the time), to help lift it. Mike and someone else lifted it...Mike wrecked something in his back; something that he has had trouble with ever since. He, eventually, had two operations on discs in his back.

Joey had moved off the farm and now did butchering in Dawson Creek, for Lawrence Meats; he certainly had a lot of experience from working on the farm. A man named Jacob, taught Joey the rest of what he needed to know about professional butchering. He made a good friend, who was a roommate for a few years - he continued that friendship years later, when both of them ended up down in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

We had gone to a lot of second-hand sales, trying to get the things we needed - one of which, was not...a puppy. But, I guess all of us needed what one had to offer us. They "marked down" a little, black (with white trim), female pup - $2...we couldn't pass that one up. We named her "Tiny"; she was to replace the dog Lisa lost on the farm.

Later we got a rust-colored cat, named "Rusty"; he was a small kitten. We asked Joey to neuter him: Mary "assisted"; they laced him into a boot and cut away. Joey did a really good job, kitty was just fine. He was the nicest cat - would "talk" to us, when we said something to him. The only problem was that he would go outside, in the daytime, and roll in something (poison oak?)… then, come inside and rub against my legs. Result: I had an itchy rash.
