CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Convention And Fix-Up Time

Joe and I had gone to a convention in Texas, with our daughter Mary and a young man, we took in place of our son Joey (because he got sick). We traveled with the original owner of the farm (with his family).

We had a lot of the young people with us. The owner's family stayed in one place and Joe and I took all the young people and slept in a huge room with two beds, a lot of sleeping bags, and the youngest boy with us, had to sleep in a closet (all the floor space was taken up). We all had a good time; drank pop, sang songs, and enjoyed each other's company. That trip was during the second winter at the farm, and soon after, we were completely out of money - so, that was the end of our trips.

It seemed like a lot of the people went to conventions, or to stay with friends in town or back in the States, from time to time. Joe and I had no money to go anywhere; our chores held us right to the farm. Twice, Joe had to drive a travelling ministry to another farm, around that same area, and I got to go with him.

One time Joe went to Edmonton with another elder, to buy some things; I got to go with him. And, one time both of us took a young woman in to Grande Prairie, to take a radio license test. Outside of that, I had not gone anywhere. Most of our children had only left the farm one time...when our friend from Massachusetts had come to see us and we met him in town.

We thought it would be nice to fix up our yard around the cabin; so we got some small evergreen trees, and planted them out in front of the cabin. Then, we got some red tulip bulbs in town, and planted them real close to the front of the cabin...we were anticipating a beautiful Spring. But, we never did get to see if they came up - and if they survived a wandering goat or sheep.
