CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Wedding On The Farm

A young couple that we had known for many years, on the farm, were getting married; we were invited to the wedding. We were excited to visit the farm; I had not been back there since I had gone into town for the operation.

Joe made a hanging wall hutch for them, at the shop where he worked; he stained it pecan color. It had a shelf and below it were pegs to hang mugs on...we got some mugs that were apple green in color. We were sure they could use it, on the farm.

We were welcomed, warmly, on the farm and it was a beautiful wedding. I remember, especially, saying to the young bride, "Always stay happy." (She was one of my "goat girls".) They went camping for their honeymoon: just up the hillside from the farm. One of the elders, secretly gave them a bottle of wine…and they camped out there, amongst the wild animals.

Years later, they had a son and then a daughter. When the daughter was just a few months old, she passed away while her grandmother was babysitting. An autopsy was ordered, the health officials – and she had died of a twisted intestine. Nothing could have prevented it; not even if they had lived in town. She was buried in the little cemetery, on the ‘bench’ (plateau near the river). The government had given the farm permission to start their own cemetery, after the first man had passed away, out there.

A few years later, the couple and their son went to live in Spain. They had gone there to teach the people how to live off the land; but the people weren’t interested in learning – they were expected to do all the work. The couple tried to come back to live on Graham River Farm, but one of the elders said they could never come back. It took a lot of phone calls, before one of the traveling ministries…reversed that ruling; and they came back to the farm.

A few years later (again), they felt to leave the farm; and the man eventually became a pastor of a non-denominational church.
