THE TASMANIAN PEACE TRUST

The Tasmanian Peace Trust was established in 1985 as a means of continuing the initiatives arising from the International Year of Peace. It is a non-political, legally constituted body which operates under a Deed of Trust.

Funding comes from the public through donations, interest free loans and bequests. Twice a year the Trust makes funds available to individuals and groups who submit peace projects. The Afterglow Poetry Competition was one such project. Many of the initiatives it has helped to encourage might not otherwise have taken root. To date grants totalling in excess of $45,000 have been made since the Trust's inception.

In practical terms, the Trust has:

1. Seeded new initiatives through -

Campaign against war toys
Streets for Peace
Gardens for Peace
Libraries for Peace

2. Supported grass roots community education through -

Newsletters and periodicals
Hobart Peace Centre
Peace priorities
Community peace groups
Annual TPT Public Lecture

3. Encouraged initiatives for conflict resolution through -

Establishment of community mediation
Service Tasmania*
Australian Disarmament dialogue
United Nations seminars
Domestic Violence Action Group

4. Subsidised -

Attendance by senior students to United Nations Association Conference
Production of Peace Manual by highschool students
Highschool Australia-wide petition to world leaders

* This is the Trust's major project. Through its Community Mediation Service, it maintains and builds harmonious relationships in neighbourhoods, schools, communities, workplaces (for both individuals and groups in conflict); saves the expense, delay and inconvenience of possible legal action; provides the opportunity to learn new skills in conflict resolution, and services that are unbiased and confidential.

PEACE IS THE PATHWAY

The Tasmanian Peace Trust believes that:

PEACE IS THE PATHWAY -

to a more just and a more caring society
to a world free from threats of violence, war and oppression
to a community free from poverty, homelessness and unemployment
