It was a dark foggey night on Rt.9N. The roads were wet from an earlier rain.
I was about seven miles from home after traveling some 40 miles from a volunteer organization's board meeting of which I was a member.
And it was about 10 p.m.
BUT, it was not really me
Coming around a sharp bend ahead of me were those lights of a vehicle spinning out of control. I swerved to the berm on my side of the road
To no avail ! The lights disappeared ! Yet, today I can still see them coming around that bend
I awoke the next morning with a mighty headache. Yet I could hardly see at first my one eye did not want to open. I had to go to the bathroom and it was then I realized I was in a hospital bed.
My God, who was that I saw in a mirror as I struggled into the bathroom ! My face was swollen and I had this ugly bandage covering the massive hematoma
on my left forehead
I heard a scream ! It was me !
A nurse helped me back to bed .
She said I had been in an auto accident !
Kay, my wife, had been patiently waiting for me to come home -- I always did before -- with the kids safely asleep in their beds.
Suddenly the quiet of the late night was broken by the sound of an ambulance siren - its wailing magnified by the dense fog .
It was me, she said to herself !
About an hour later the quiet was again broken by the sound of the telephone ringing.
It was the hospital and a nurse told her to come up to the emergency room as I was seriously injured in an accident. She got the oldest child up to tell her and that she was to stay awake until she returned.
Kay called a friend to take her to the hospital. It was to be a long night of immense stress for my family that was to continue for years !
Ά Ά Ά Thus was to be a new but worse ME ! And it changed the lives of three growing children and a dedicated wife !
I can not really remember. The last I saw and remember were - - - those lights !
Theory is that the car hit my VW van front mounted spare tire head-on, bounced off, and came back to hit my drivers side and front again !
Tire tracks indicated my van stayed on the berm on my side of the road when I was hit and afterwards.
I was found in the "passenger" seat; the floor gearshift bent flat toward that side of the van, and a huge indentation in the passenger side door where I had apparently been thrown... I had my seat belt on at the time of the collision ! Speculation is on first impact my body lurched forword and the seat belt button struck the steering wheel and released it !
My head initially hit the windshield shattering it. Who knows where next !
A friend was the EMT on the ambulance attending me.
He said I was complaining only that me knees were hurting. When he opened the door he said I started to help him get me out ! The van was leaning down a steep bank, so I was much higher than my EMT friend.
He had to hollar at me to keep me still. It was very apparent to him I had a head injury ! I didn't cooperate well when they transported me to the emergency room. I fought the cold pack place on my forehead and wanted to sit up - "I was alright !"
In the emergency room, still not aware of anything, it is said I refused to let them take my shoes off so they could remove my pants more easily.
€ My mother always warned me when I went out to make sure I had clean underwear and no holes in my socks - - - I wasn't sure, I guess !
The ambulance waited to see if I would need to be transported further to a major hospital in Vermont -about an hours traveltime.
But, back then, "head" injuries were not considered necessarily "brain" injuries.
AND THE "HELL" WAS TO BUT CONTINUE
THE 'SILENT EPIDEMIC' IS GETTING LOUDER -- LEFT UNATTENDED MORE AND MORE BRAIN INJURED SUFFER EVEN MORE. IT WILL ALSO MAKE IT MORE EXPENSIVE FOR OUR SOCIETY TO CARE FOR THESE PEOPLE --- PERHAPS EVEN THEIR FAMIIES AS WELL !
