Where to Put Your Page
A guide to free webspace providers
by Makoto |
These days,
there are dozens of web hosters, and plenty of free ones, but with different
rules and guidelines. The free ones often don't give enough space, have
big ugly ads, or require you to learn FTP. All these deciding factors can
drive one nuts! There's just so many! Kind of like senpais....

Oops, sorry! ^^;; I think we should star out first with a list of factors
that go into choosing an FWP (Free Webspace Providers - thanks for the
correction, Dragon-chan ^^).
-
Certain webspace
providers give out certain amounts of web space, obviously. In my experience,
10 or 15 MEG has been PLENTY for one page; actually, the page took up about
half as much space but you don't want to run yourself short. This is usually
the deciding factor in choosing an FWP for me.
-
Some FWPs have
File Managers, like Geocities does, where you upload using their little
program (you don't have to download it) and there's no option for using
FTP.
-
FTP is File-Transfer
Protocol, and you need to download a program to upload via FTP. Places
like Xoom and most anime servers use FTP. I would suggest looking at Tucows
to find an FTP program.
-
Often, an FWP
will require that you put ads such as pop-up windows or banners on every
single page. It gets pretty annoying, and I'll definetely let you know
when an FWP requires this.
-
Sometimes, servers
go down and thus, the page goes down. I'll let you know whether an ISP
is prone to going down often or if it's really dependable.
Ok! Now on to
the FWPs:
-
Geocities
-
The standard FWP
next door; very fast, friendly and easy. You hardly have to know anything
about webpages to put a page up here, because everything is done via File
Manager. They do, however, have REALLY annoying pop-up ads on every single
page. They give 11 Meg.
-
Tripod
-
They're the second
FWP to come to mind. They give 11 Meg as well, and only put a pop-up ad
on the index page, I believe. They're also fast, but have the reputation
of nuking whole pages. (Always make sure you have a backup of every page!)
-
Xoom
-
Another leader
in webhosting, they give out unlimited space- for a cost. Unforunately,
they've recently started putting up these annoying frames in order to give
everyone unlimited space. *_*
-
Angelfire
-
I've never had
a page hosted by them, because they only give out 5 Meg, but they don't
have any ads, and that's always a good thing.
Those were all
the standard, all-purpose free FWPs that are fairly well known. I would
recommend going to them because they are professional, most of the time,
and reputed to be reliable.
Now on to the
anime-related servers:
-
Anime.net
- gives out space, not sure how much
-
Animecity.nu
- subdomain and unlimited space but the application is usually not available
;_;
-
Anime-manga.net
- subdomain and 20 Meg, however they're SLOW in terms of server speed and
the time it takes them to respond. ;_;
-
Animedomain.com
- several Meg, but I think they're closed for a bit
-
Animeonline.org
- lots of anime-related services
That's all for
now!
