All lyrics are written the way they are sung, not the way they are originally written.
IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING WHY I HAVE SEPARATE LYRICS TO THE LIVE PERFORMANCES: As we all know, when a performer performs something live, it's got slight differences to the original. The same goes with Alanis, so when she sings something, it's a little different each time, so that's why I felt like I should put up lyrics to her live performances, as well as the interviews that often go with them. In addition, since my lyrics include the um's oh's ooh's and other sounds like that, and they change greatly for each performance, that is why I have included them.

Ironic
(from the Fuji Rock Festival, 2001)
[Applause]
Hi yi yi yi yi yi yi yi ya ow
An old man [Crowd:] turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery-y, [Alanis:] died the next day
Its a [Crowd:] black fly in your Chardonnay
[Alanis:] Its a death ro-ow pardon two minutes too late
And isnt it ironic . . . dont you think?
Its like rai-ee-ain on your wedding day
Its a free-ee ri-ide when youve already paid
Its the good advi-ee-i-ice that you just didnt take
'Nd who wouldve thought? . . . it figures
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his su-u-uitcase, kissed his kids good-bye-ee-ye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
Well isnt this nice. . .
And isnt it ironic. . . dont you think?
Its like rai-ee-ain on your wedding day
Its a free-ee ride when youve already paid
Its the good advi-ee-i-ice that you just didnt take
And who wouldve thought . . . it figures
Well life has a funny way, of sneaking up on ya
When you think everythings okay and everythings going
ri-ee-i-ee-i-ight
And life has a funny way, of helping you out when
You think everythings gone wrong and everything blows up
In your fa-a-ace
A traffic jam when youre already late
A no-smo-oo-oking sign on your cigarette break
Its like ten thousand spoons when all ya need is a knife
Its meeting the man of my dreams
And meeting his beautiful wife
And isnt it ironic... dont you think?
A little too-oo-oo-oo-oo ironic ... and yeah I really do think...
Its like rai-ee-ain on your wedding day
Its a free-ee ri-ide when youve already paid
Its the good advi-ee-i-ice that you just didnt take
And who wouldve thought . . . it figu-ures
Ya da di, hi ya yi, yi hoo ya, how ow ow, ya da di hi ah yi ya hi

[Spoken:] Thank you so much everyone, I love you, goodnight!

All I Really Want (from Music Without Borders Live, October 21st, 2001)
[Bruce Cockburn was one of the earlier
performers of the night, Alanis (one of the organisers of the
event) introduced him:]
[Applause]
Alanis: Thank you. Welcome everybody, thank you so much for being
here. Peace. Thank you so much being here everyone. I very much
appreciate your all coming tonight; contributing your time and
your energy and your, your contributions to what will benefit,
what will benefit the, the UN relief and uh, sending love to a
country and a culture that needs a lot of it right now I think.
I'd like to thank everyone who's taking part in this on our inner
circle here that we contributed to making tonight possible.
Everyone has contributed their time and money very generously and
I thank them each, thank you all each for being here. And I'd
also like to thank all the bands and bandmates that've
contributed their time and their geniosity [sic] tonight and I'd
like to start the evening off by introducing to you someone who's
filled with integrity and is as prolific as his is
contributing... and what's most impressive and inspiring about
the man I'm about to introduce is his ability to not only do acts
of contribution that contribute to society but also to be it more
so than anything else, and without further ado I'd like to
introduce to you Bruce Cockburn!
...
[Later in the show, Alanis is introduced by Stephen Paige of the Barenaked Ladies and Gordon Downie of the Tragically Hip)
[NOTE: All performances were performed together in one set. They have separated by song for clarity. "A Man" follows this song exactly]
Gordon: Hello there
Stephen: Hey everybody:
Gordon: Please put your hands together, she's an inspiration,
she's got a fabulous band:
Stephen: Alanis Morissette!
[Applause]
[Alanis performs All I Really Want]
Do I stress you out?
My sweater is on backwards and inside out
And you say how-oo-ow-oo-ow appropriate
I dont want to dissect everything today
I dont mean to pick you apart you see
But I ca-ee-aa-ee-a-ant help it
And there I go jumping before the gunshot has gone off
Slap me with a splintered ruler
And it would knock me to the floor if I wasnt there already
If only I could hunt the hunter, woah oh
And all I really want, is some patience
A way to calm the angry voice oh oh
And all I really want, is deliverance
A-how-ee-i-ee-i-oh-yi-ee-oh-ee-oh
Do I wear you out?
You must wonder why Im relentless and all strung out
Im consumed by the chill of solitary
Im like Estella
I like to reel it in and then spit 'em out
Im frustrated by your apathy
And I am frightened by the corrupted ways of this land
If only I could meet the Maker
And I am fascinated by the spiritual man
I am humbled by his humble nature, woah oh
And what I wouldnt give, to find a soulmate
Someone else to catch this drift, woah oh
And what I wouldnt give to meet a kindred
A-how-ee-i-ee-i-hoo-yi-ee-oo-oo-ooh
Well enough about me, lets talk about you for a minute
Enough about you, lets talk about life for a while
The conflicts, the craziness and the sound of pretences
Falling all arou-ee-ou-ound . . . all
a-rou-ee-i-ee-i-ee-i-ee-i-ee-ou-ee-ou-ee-ound
Why am I so petrified of silence?
Here can you handle this?
[Cheers]
Did you think about your bills, your ex, your deadlines
Or when ya think youre gonna die?
Or did you long for the next dis-trac-tion
And all I need now is intellectual intercourse
A soul to dig the hole much deeper
And I have no concept of time other than it is flying
If only I could kill the killer, oh oh
And all I really want, is some peace man
A place to find a common grou-hou-ou-ound
And all I really want, is a wavelength
A-how-oo-ow-ee-ah-oh-i-ee-oo-oo-ooh
All I really want, is some comfort
A way to get my hands untied, hey ey
And all I really want, is some justice
A-ha-ee-ah-ee-ah-ah yi-ee-ya-ee-oh-ee-ooh
[Cheers]
[Spoken:] Thank you very much. Hello everybody and bless you for being here!
A Man (from Music Without Borders Live, October 21st, 2001)
I am a man as a man I've been told
Bacon is brought to the house in this mold
Born of your bellies I yearn for the cord
Years I have groveled repentance ignored
And I have been blamed
And I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended
I am a man who was raised by such men
I've been crucified by enragèd
woman
And I am a man who has grown from a son
I'm often reminded of the fools I'm among
And I have been blamed
And I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended
And I have been shamed
And I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended
We don't fare well with endless reprima-a-ands
We don't do well with a life served as a sentence and
This won't work well if you're hell bent on your offence
'Cause I am a man who understands your resistance
I am a man who has heard all he can
'Cause I don't fare well with endless punishment
And I am a man who still does what he can
To dispel our archaic reputation
'Cause I have been blamed and I have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended
And we have been shamed and we have repented
I'm working my way toward our union mended
We don't do well with endless reprimands and
We don't fare well with a life served as a sentence
This won't work well if you're hell bent on your offence
'Cause I am a man who understands your resistance
[Spoken:] Thank you
Still (from Music Without Borders Live, October 21st, 2001)
I am the harm that you inflict
I am your brilliance and frustration
I'm the nuclear bombs if they're to hit
I am your immaturity and your indignance
I am your misfits and your praisèd
I am your doubt and your conviction
I am your charity and your rape
I am your grasping and expectation
I see you
Averting your glances
I see you
Cheering on a war
I see you
Ignoring your children
And I love you still
And I love you still
I am your joy and your regret
I am your fury and your elation
I am your yearning and your sweat
I am your faithless and your religion
I see you
Altering history
I see you
Abusing the land
I see you
And your selective amnesia
And I love you still
And I love you still
Ah-ah ah-ah, ah-ah ah-ah

Ah-ah ah-ah, ah-ah ah-ah
Ah-ah ah-ah, ah-ah ah-ah
Ah-ah ah-ah-ah
I am your tragedy and your fortune
I am your crisis and delight
I am your profits and your prophet
I am your art I am your bytes
I am your death and your decisions
I am your passion and your plights
I am your sickness and convalescence
I am your weapons and your light
I see you
Holding your grudges
I see you
Gunning them down
I see you
Silencing your sisters
And I love you still
And I love you -
I see you
Lie to your country
I see you
Forcing them out
I see you
Blaming each other
And I love you still
And I love you still

a pleasure and a gift to be here tonight amongst you and amongst
fellow artists and bandmates on this stage. I'd love to introduce
you to everyone up here with me. This is Nick Lashley on guitar.

Sister Blister (from Music Without Borders Live, October 21st, 2001)
[Spoken:] We're playing some new songs tonight for the first time, and this is a song called Sister Blister:
[Sung:] You and me we're cut from the
same cloth
It seems to some we famously get along
But you and me are strangers to each other
'Cause you and me: competitive to the bone
Such tragedy to trample on each other with how much we've endured
With the state this land is in
And you and me feel joinèd by
only gender
We are not all for one and one for all
Sister blister we fight to please the brothers
We think their acceptance is how we wi-i-in
They're happy we're climbing over each other
To beg the club of boys to let us in
You and me estrangèd from the
mother
You and me have felt impotent in our skin
And you and me have taken it out on each other
And you and me disloyal to the feminine
Such a pity to disavow each other with how far we've come
With how strong we've been
And you and me are on this pendulum together
You and me with scarcity still fueling
Sister blister we fight to please the brothers
We think their acceptance is how we wi-i-in
They're happy we're climbing over each other
To beg the club of boys to let us in
We may not have priorities same
We may not even like each other
We may not be hugely anti-men
But such a cost to dishonour a sister
You and me have made it harder for the other
We forget how hard separatism has been
You and me can help change their minds together
You and me in alignment until the end
Sister blister we fight to please the brothers
We think their acceptance is how we win
They're happy we're climbing over each other
To beg the club of boys to let us in
Sister blister we fight to please the brothers
We think their acceptance is how we win
They're happy we're climbing over each other
To beg the club of boys to let us in
[Alanis hums]
[Spoken:] Thank you...
You Learn (from Music Without Borders Live, October 21st, 2001)
[Spoken:] ... I dedicate this next
song to everybody that's here tonight and everyone who
contributed. Send the message across the world that we are all
one by our actions. This is for you.
[Sung:]
Oh ooh hoo ooh
Hi-I recommend getting your heart trampled on, to anyone, oh oh
ee oh
I-I-I recommend walking around naked in your living ro-oo-oom
Yeah, swallow-ow it down (what a jagged little pill)
It fee-eels so good (swimmin' in your stomach)
Wait until the dust se-ee-e-ee-e-e-ettles
You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lo-ose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you lea-ea-ea-ea-ea-earn, aye ee aye aye
I-I recommend biting off more than you can chew to anyone
I certainly, certainly, certainly do
I-I-I recommend sticking your foot in your mouth at any
ti-e-i-e-ime, ooh
Oh feel free-ee
Throw-ow-ow it down (the caution blocks you from the wi-ind)
Ho-o-old it u-up (to the ray-ays)
You wait and see when the smo-oo-o-oke clea-ears
You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lo-ose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you lea-ea-ea-ea-earn aye!
Hoy aye how oy oh oh oh oh oh oh oh aye hi ya da aye yi
Doo doh doh doh doh ah ha ah hi ya hoy yo ya hoy yoy hoy!
We-ear it out (the way a three-year-old would do)
Me-e-elt it dow-own (youre gonna have to eventually anyway)
The fi-ire trucks are coming up around the be-e-e-end
You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lo-ose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn
You live you lea-ea-ea-earn
You grieve you learn
You choke you learn
You laugh you learn
You choo-oo-oose you lea-ea-earn
You pray you learn
You ask you learn
You live you lea-ea-ea-earn
Ha oh oh ho yo oh hoy!
[Spoken:] Thank you
[Later in the show, Alanis is interviewed by CBC's Rick Mercer:]
Rick: And we're backstage but don't worry there's a whole bunch
more Tragically Hip coming up, but right now I'm here with
Alanis, known all over the world as a big international
superstar, here as an Ottawa girl. Now Alanis, you not only
performed live tonight of course, but you were very instrumental
in producing this concert, making it happen. Everyone wants to do
something in this crisis, but uh, what made you kinda get up out
of bed one morning and go "I'm gonna do this giant thing,
I'm gonna do this big rock concert."?
Alanis: Well the first thing I thought literally moments after it
happened was that not only did I wanna cancel everything that I
had booked beforehand that had at that point nothing to do with
it because it didn't exist...
Rick: Right
Alanis: ... but I wanted to really contribute in whatever way I
could and, uh, Gordon Downie from Tragically Hip had mentioned
wanting to do something, and I really wanted to do something, so
I dive in with my manager and we reached out to a bunch of our
friends and, and fellow artists and aa lot of them said yes,
obviously, so it was just something that organically came to
be...
Rick: Right
Alanis: ... just from inspiration.
Rick: Have you every seen anything like this take place, like on
this scale for some, you know, for humanitarian aid, this many
artists coming together, I mean I can't think.... [trails off and
mutters incoherently]
Alanis: You mean in Canada?
Rick: Yeah
Alanis: Um, I, I haven't experienced it myself but I'm sure
there's been times...
Rick: Right
Alanis: ... where people have come together to do things, but,
but nothing, you know, they're all distinctly unique, so nothing
of the, of this ilk.
Rick: Right
Alanis: Yeah
Rick: Well thanks very much
Alanis: Thank you
Rick: And now we're gonna throw over to my immediate left to
George [Strombalopoulous] and the Barenaked Ladies...
[NOTE: This concert raised over a million dollars towards the
United Nations Donor Appeal, and contributions can still be made
by calling Ticketmaster Canada]
Rockin In The Free World (from Music
Without Borders Live, October 21st, 2001)
[This cover of the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song was
performed by the following artists as part of this benefit
concert: Alanis Morissette, The Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies,
Bruce Cockburn, Our Lady Peace, and Bradford How of MuchMusic)
GORDON DOWNIE (Of The Tragically Hip): There's colours on the
street, red, white and blue.
ALANIS: People shuffling their feet, people sleeping in their
shoes.
GORD & ALANIS: But there's a warning sign on the road ahead.
There's a lot of people saying we'd be better off dead.
Don't feel like Satan, but I am to them, so I try to forget it,
any way I can.
ALL: Keep on rockin' in the free world, keep on rockin' in the
free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world
[Guitar solo, Bruce Cockburn]
STEPHEN PAIGE (of Barenaked Ladies): I see a woman in the night
with a baby in her hand
under an old street light near a garbage can.
Now she puts the kid away, and she's gone to get a hit,
[Joined by the rest of BNL on the bolded words] She hates her
life, and what she's done to it
There's one more kid that will never go to school
never get to fall in love, never get to be cool.
ALL: Keep on rockin' in the free world, keep on rockin' in the
free world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world, keep on rockin' in the free
world.
[Guitar solo, Bruce Cockburn]
RAINE MAIDA (of Our Lady Peace) with BRUCE COCKBURN: We got a
thousand points of light for the homeless man.
We got a kinder, gentler machine gun hand.
We got department stores and toilet paper, styrofoam boxes for
the ozone layer
Got a man of the people, says, keep hope alive, got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.
Keep on rockin' in the free world, keep on rockin' in the free
world.
Keep on rockin' in the free world, keep on rockin' in the free
world.
BRADFORD: Ow ooh!
STEPHEN: Alright, this is the point where you sing, sing it! You
know the words!
ALL: Keep on rockin' in the free world
BNL: Sing it Canada sing it!
ALL with CROWD: Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world
CROWD: Keep on rockin' in the free world
STEPHEN: Keep on rockin'!
CROWD: Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world
ALL with CROWD: Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world

Hands
Clean (From the Today Show, February 21st, 2002)
Matt: Hockey and figure skating are not the only hot tickets in
Salt Lake City these days. With the release of her new album
Under Rug Swept just about a week away, Alanis Morissette is
prepared to perform after the medal ceremony tonight and she's
expected to draw a huge crowd. She's drawn a nice intimate crowd
this morning [Alanis laughs] on the Today Show. Alanis nice to
see you
Alanis: Nice to see you
Matt: Is this just an, I don't mean this one here, but tonight,
is it just another gig for you?
Alanis: It's the, it's the sort of inaugaural moments of the new
chapter of this record for us, so...
Matt: What's it, what's it gonna be like though, performing after
a medals ceremony, is that a little different?
Alanis: Well it's, it's uh, an interesting juxtaposition having,
you know, athleticism and art together, but they're both, you
know, pretty passionate and inspired things to do, so I think
there's a thread of continuity between the two.
Matt: The new album, from what I read, is the first time you
haven't worked with a co-writer or a producer
Alanis: Yeah
Matt: Why go it alone?
Alanis: Natural step in my evolution I think. I've been making
records for a long time and it's more out of curiosity I think
than anything else to see what it would soung like, like on my
own, but it, it's a collaborative experience regardless, 'cause
I'm not an island.
Matt: So many of your, of your songs in the past have been very
personal, same true with this album?
Alanis: Yeah, more than ever I think
Matt: One of the songs, Hands Clean, has been getting a lot of
attention, tell me, in you, what is that about?
Alanis: Um, it's a virtual dialogue of sorts, the verses and the
B sections, the person who the song's about speak to me in the
past and then I respond to him in the present in the choruses and
the bridge
Matt: About a very personal relationship as well
Alanis: Yes
Matt: What, is that what you're gonna play for us this morning?
Alanis: We'll play it first yes
Matt: Ladies and gentleman, Alansi Morissette
Alanis: Thank you
[performs an acoustic version of Hands Clean]
If it weren't for your maturity none of this would've happened
If you weren't so wise beyond your years I would've been able to
control myself and
If it weren't for my attention you wouldn't have been successful
and if
If it weren't for me you would never have amounted to very much
Ooh this could be messy-y-y
But you-ou don't seem to mi-ind and
Ooh don't go telling everybody-y-y
And overlook this supposèd
cri-ime and
We'll fast forward to a few years later
And no one knows except the both of us
And I have honoured your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of thi-i-is
You're essentially an employee and I like you having to depend on
me and
You're a kind of a protégé and one day you'll say you learned all you
know from me and
I know you depend on me like a young thing would to a guardian
and
I know you sexualize me like a young thing would and I think I
like it
Ooh this could get messy-y-y
But you-ou-ou don't seem to mi-ee-i-ind
And ooh don't go telling everybody-y-y
And overlook this supposèd
cri-ime
We'll fast forward to a few years later and
No one knows except the both of u-u-u-us
And I have honoured your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of thi-i-is
What part of your memory is selective and ten-der rug swept?
What part of your memory is selective and tends to forget?
What with this distance it seems so obvious?
Just make sure you don't tell on me especially to members of your
family aand
We best keep this to ourselves and not tell any members of our
inner posse and
I wish I could tell the world 'cause you're such a pretty thing
when you're done up properly and
I might want to marry you one day if you watch that weight and
you keep your firm body
Ooh this could get messy-y-y but
You-ou-ou don't seem to mi-ee-i-ind and
Ooh don't go tellin' everybody-y-y
And overlook this supposèd
cri-ime and
We'll fast forward to a few years later and
No one knows except the both of us
And I have honoured your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of thi-i-is
Ah ah ah oh oh
Ah ah ah oh
Ya ah ah
[Spoken:] Yoo!
[Applause]
Matt: Alanis Morissette, and she'll be back to perform another
song for us later on...

Precious
Illusions (from the Today Show, February 21st, 2002)
Katie: And earlier this morning we heard a song from the lovely
and talented Alanis Morissette, who's got a new album coming out
next week, it's called Under Rug Swept. We asked Alanis and her
friends to stick around and play another song. And her friends
are Jason Orme, is that right
Jason: Yes
Katie: Did I pronounce it correctly? And David Levita, like Evita
with an L
David: That's it
Katie: It's so nice to see you guys, we wanna say a big thank you
to you all for getting up so early...
David: Thank you for having us
Katie: ... to perform for us, because you're gonna be performing
tonight and I hope you're gonna go home and take a little nap
Alanis: Mmhmm, a little nap and then uh, next chapter tonight!
Katie: Is it hard for you to sing first thing in the morning, it
is for a lot of folks but you sounded terrific
Alanis: It's just that I have that Bonnie Tyler sound
Katie: Yeah it's a little rastier than usual right?
Alanis: Exactly
Katie: So you're gonna sing a song for us called Precious
Illusions now
Alanis: Yeah, mmhmm
Katie: Alright, Alanis Morissette!
Alanis and Katie: Thank you
[Applause]
[Performs an acoustic version of Precious Illusions]
You'll rescue me right? In the exact same way they never did..
I'll be happy right? When your healing powers kick in
You'll complete me right? Then my life can finally begin
I'll be worthy right? Only when you realize the gem I am?
But this won't work now the way it once did
And I won't keep it up even though I would love to
Once I know who I'm not then I'll know who I am
But I know I won't keep on playing the victim
These precious illusions in my head did not let me down when I
was defenseless
And parting with them is like parting with invisible best friends
This ring will help me yet as will you knight in shining
armou-ou-ou-our
This pill will help me yet as will these boys gone through like
water
But this won't work as well as the way it once did
'Cause I want to decide between survival and bliss
Though I know who I'm not I still don't know who I am
But I know I won't keep on playing the victim
These precious illusions in my head did not let me down when I
was a kid
And parting with them is like parting with a childhood best
friend
I've spent so long firmly looking outside me
I've spent so much time living in survi-i-i-i-ival mo-ode
But this won't work as well as the way it once did
'Cause I want to decide between survival and bliss
Though I know who I'm not I still don't know who I am
But I know I won't keep on playing the victim
These precious illusions in my he-ead did not let me down when I
was defenseless
And parting with them is like parting with invisible best
frie-ie-iends
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Oh oh oh oh oh
[Applause]
[Spoken:] Thank you
Matt: Alanis Morissette! Alanis thank you so much
Alanis: Thanks
Katie (to Jason and David): Thanks you guys
Matt: David and Jason, thank you guys too. We'll watch for you
tonight after the medals ceremony in downtown Salt Lake
Katie: They're all so nice aren't they?
Matt: They really are
Katie: Yeah....
Hands Clean (from The Late Show With David Letterman, February 25th, 2002)
[Return from commercial to applause]
David Letterman: Alright, our next guest made her network
television debut with us seven years ago and has since sold over
forty million albums. This is her new CD, it's uh, entitled Under
Rug Swept, here she is, Alanis Morissette!
[Applause]
[Performs Hands Clean]
If it weren't for your maturity none of this would've happened
If you weren't so wise beyond your years I would've been able to
control myself and
If it weren't for my attention you wouldn't have been successful
and if
If it weren't for me you would never have amounted to very much
Ooh this could get messy but
You-ou don't seem to mi-ind and
Ooh don't go tellin' everybody and
And overlook this supposèd
cri-ime
We'll fast forward to a few years later
And no one knows except the both of us
And I have honoured your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of this
You're essentially an employee and I like you having to depend on
me
You're a kind of a protégé and one day you'll say you learned all you
know from me and
And I know you depend on me like a young thing would to a
guardian
I know you sexualize me like a young thing would and I think I
like it
Ooh this could get messy
But you-ou don't seem to mi-ee-i-ind and
Ooh don't go telling everybody
And overlook this supposèd
cri-ime
We'll fast forward to a few years later and
And no one knows except the both of u-u-u-us
And I have honoured your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of this
What part of our history's reinvented and under rug swept?
What part of your memory is selective and tends to forget?
What with this distance it seems so obvious?
Just make sure you don't tell on me especially to members of your
family 'nd
We best keep this to ourselves and not tell any members of our
inner posse and
I wish I could tell the world 'cause you're such a pretty thing
when you're done up properly and
I might want to marry you one day if you watch that weight and
you keep your firm body and
Ooh this could get messy but
You-ou don't seem to mi-ee-i-ind and
Ooh don't go tellin' everybody and
And overlook this supposèd
cri-ime
We'll fast forward to a few years later and
No one knows except the both of u-u-u-us
And I have honoured your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of this
Oh ah oh oh oh
Ah ah oh oh oh
Ah ah ah
[Applause]
[Spoken] Thank you!
Dave (shaking Alanis' hand and not stopping until the commercial
break): Nice going, [to band] how you doin'? Hi Alanis! God to
see you thank you very much for being here, you doin' alright?
Alanis: I'm doing fine
Dave: Good, nice to see you, forty million?
Alanis: Mmhmm
Dave: That's what they say! We'll be right back everybody. Thank
you so much, come on over
[Commercial Break]
Dave: Always great to have you with us
Alanis: It's so good to be here
Dave: How've you been, everything alright?
Alanis: Everything's amazing
Dave: Good, and what do you think, is this doin' pretty well?
[referring to Under Rug Swept]
Alanis: It feels good!
Dave: You oughta get into the music business!
Alanis: I should try right?
[Laughter]
Dave: He he, give it a shot
Alanis: Yes, I will
Dave: Well I hope you come back soon and often, congratulations,
nice to see you, Alanis Morissette everybody!
[Dave signs off, credits roll]

Uninvited
(From The Rosie O'Donnell Show, February 26th, 2002)
[Return from commercial to applause]
Rosie: Under Rug Swept is the new CD and it's absolutely
beautiful, you should be very proud of it
Alanis: Thank you, I'm really happy about it
Rosie: Yeah and, and you were at the Olympics?!
Alanis: I was
Rosie: How did you like that?
Alanis: It was an amazing experience, I, I have issues with
competition a lot of times so ...
Rosie: Yeah
Alanis: ... part of me though, y'know, what's gonna happen when
I'm there with all this competition happening but it was lovely
and competition can be fun
Rosie: Yeah, and you know when someone like Apollo Anton Onho,
when he won the silver and was just as happy...
Alanis: So sweet
Rosie: ... Yeah as if he had won the gold
Alanis: Yeah, yeah
Rosie: I thought it was a very beautiful event
Alanis: It was much more of a sense of unity this time than I had
ever seen before so it was really sweet
Rosie: Did you feel a lot of pressure performing at the Olympics?
Or not particularly, it was more fun right?
Alanis: When I was playing hockey you mean?
Rosie: No no no [laughter] y'know when you were doing the triple
toe loop?
Alanis: Yes...
Rosie: ...Loop...
Alanis: No, yes, uh, I didn't feel pressured
Rosie: You didn't?
Alanis: But I felt happy to be there
Rosie: Yeah
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: Now you're gonna tour with this record I assume
Alanis: Yes
Rosie: Yeah
Alanis: Yes
Rosie: But not nearly as much as the other ones?
Alanis: No not nearly as, as long I don't think
Rosie: It's very gruelling, people don't really, I think, get it
Alanis: You can lose your mind a little bit out there
Rosie: Yeah, well what was the longest you ever went away on
tour?
Alanis: Uh, both tours were a little over a year and a half
Rosie: Wow
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: Yeah, that's long
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: Yeah, and is it difficult for you, like after being in a
different city every day, you know wake up not know where you are
sometimes?
Alanis: I'm actually having the best time ever on this tour to be
honest
Rosie: Yeah
Alanis: So I'm enjoying it in a way I didn't before, I think my
eyes are more open
Rosie: Getting older?
Alanis: That's what happens
Rosie: Exactly
Alanis: I think getting older is the most brilliant genius thing
ever, y'know?
Rosie: I do too, I'm gonna be forty in March
Alanis: You see, that's the greatest!
Rosie: Yeah
Alanis: People in their forties rock!
Rosie: Yeah!
[Laughter and applause]
Alanis: They do, they do
Rosie: Things make sense and you don't sweat the little things as
much, that's what I think
Alanis: Right, you don't ride the the rollercoaster as much
Rosie: Yeah
Alanis: So...
Rosie: Right on, now you produced this yourself as well?
Alanis: Yes
Rosie: Now you had some hand in producing the other ones right?
Alanis: Yeah I've co-produced and informally produced but this
one I guess is more formal
Rosie: Yeah
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: And do you, did you like doing that?
Alanis: I love it, it's the ultimate facilitating and just
creating an environment where everyone comes in and does waht
they do best y'know so it's great
Rosie: It's pretty shocking to see people who can produce like
you or, y'know I was at w-... m-... Madonna's studio when she
recorded that song for [A] League Of Their Own, This Used To Be
My Playground. She had a full orchestra there ...
Alanis: Right
Rosie: ... She said, stopped them playing and said "One of
the violas is sharp"
Alanis: Right
Rosie: There're like eight violas and they're all going [imitates
playing of viola], she goes "That one!"
Alanis: Right
Rosie: I thought the ability to hear that ...
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: ... is something that people can't like ... somebody who
can't do it, me, it's sort of hard to imagine that someone can
Alanis: Yeah your ears get finely tuned to hearing certain things
and I'm still getting there too myself, so...
Rosie: Yeah
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: Now, you do yoga I know, before your shows a lot
Alanis: Yeah
Rosie: Just to chill out
Alanis: Yeah, I heard you're doing it too
Rosie: I'm doing it, yeah
Alanis: So excited for you
Rosie: It's... little scary but it's good
Alanis: Yeah it's hardcore
Rosie: I can do the tree pose...
[Laughter]
Alanis: That's great!
Rosie: ...really good, and I can do child's pose which ...
Alansi: Child's pose is my favourite
Rosie: ... which basically you just put your head down and take a
nap!
Alanis: Yeah
[Laughter]
Rosie: That's my favourite
Alanis: Corpse pose is my favourite
Rosie: I'm sadly best at that one
Alanis: Exactly
Rosie: Well, uh, you're gonna sing one of my favourite songs of
yours
Alanis: Yes, just for you
Rosie: Uninvited, that you sang at, at the Grammys when I was,
uh, hosting, and it was so beautiful
Alanis: Oh cool
Rosie: Remember? With the whole orchestra there?
Alanis: You were amazing ... yes I do remember, that was great
Rosie: Yeah, so I can't wait to hear you do it right after this
break, Alanis Morissette, Under Rug Swept go get the new CD we'll
be right back!
[Commercial Break]
Rosie: Under Rug Swept is the new CD, it's absolutely beautiful,
go and get it, and now here to sing Uninvited, once again, Alanis
Morissette!
[Alanis performs Uninvited]
Like
Anyone would be
I am flattered by your fascination with me
Like
Any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave
But you
Youre not allowed
Youre uninvited
An unfortunate slight
Must be
Strangely exciting
To watch the stoic squi-i-irm
Must be
Somewhat heartening
To watch shepherd meet
She-e-epherd
But you
Youre not allowed
Youre uninvited
An unfortunate slight
Like
Any uncharted terri-tory
I must seem greatly intriguing
You
Speak of my love like
You have experienced love like mine
Before
But this is no-ot allowed
Youre uninvited
An unfortunate slight
I
Dont think you unworthy
But I need a moment to deliberate
[Applause]

wrote and produced on her own, it literally just came out and
here to play Hands Clean off that album, please welcome Alanis

Carson: Alanis Morissette! [to band:] Thank you guys! [to
Alanis:] Come on over!
Alanis: Hi
Carson: How are you?
Alanis: Good and you
Carson: Nice to see you
Alanis: Good to see you
Carson: Well that was great!
Alanis: Thanks
Carson: Thank you guys it was awesome, Under Rug Swept... so the
album's out, you gotta be just relieved
Alanis: Yes, the bun is out of the oven
Carson: Yes it feels like that right, does this feel like your
baby because of, uh, how hands on you were?
Alanis: Yeah it does, I mean every song feels like a baby being
born so ... but this one feels like ... I had quadruplets,
quintuplets
[Laughter]
Carson: Right, Alanis wrote and produced the record herself.
What, in your words, what would make this album a success to you?
Alanis: Once it really represents exactly where I'm at, um, I
consider it to be successful in my definition of it so it really
was, the second it's finished being made
[Applause]
Carson: How 'bout those uh, how 'bout the Canadians winnin' the
Gold! How 'bout that hockey team? You musta been thrilled, who
were you rooting for?
Alanis (sarcastically): Um, I wonder...
[Laughter]
Carson: Hmm. You spend so much time here in the states, you do
business here ...
Alanis: No, I actually have, have loyalty to Canada, but I'm also
the exact person that, that cheers when either team scores
Carson: Right
Alanis: So I'm not a nationalist, but I definitely have some, you
know, some familiarity with the Canadians for obvious reasons
Carson: Right, well it's great to have you here for the whole
show
Alanis: Thank you
Carson: Uh, we'll take a quick break, it's all Alanis Morissette
on Last Call, we'll be right back. We'll continue chatting with
Alanis right after this!

Your
House (From Last Call with Carson Daly, February 27th, 2002)
[Return from commercial to applause]
Carson: And welcome back to Last Call. Alanis Morissette's first
album Jagged Little Pill sold twenty-eight million copies
worldwide. Her next album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie,
was another multi-platinum success. She's won seven Grammy's and
is here with us tonight, and I've had a chance to know you since
back in the day....
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: ... of Jagged Little Pill. I think I did your second
interview ever in America?
Alanis: Right
Carson: And um, uh, going back to that record, is ther ever a, a
time when ya just wish that it was uh, a, a good record?
Alanis (laughing): As opposed to a horrible record?
Carson: And, and not like the record of the decade as they have
labelled it?
Alanis: I don't have any regrets, I wouldn't change a damn thing
but it was overwhelming, and uh ...
[Applause]
Carson: You didn't feel like that set you on a path where it's
just like, oh buy.... you know sort of... y'know... it's like
getting a Porsche when it's your first car when you were sixteen?
Alanis: It did sort of, you know, raise the bar to the point
where relativity was always gonna be a difficult one to, to
follow up in terms of it being compared
Carson: Right
Alanis: Anything I did after compared to Jagged Little Pill, but
y'know I dealt with that pressure and now I know what it's like
to deal with pressure and I can help other people who're dealing
with pressure
Carson: I wanna talk about what you choose to write about in
music, so many people draw from a lot of different things,
whether it's political or social or something extremely personal,
um, the notion of relationships seems to be something that uh,
you, you write a lot about, why is that?
Alanis: Um, because I think it's a microcosm of what the broader
issues are, you know farbeit for me to have an opinion formed
about what I think the Middle East should do with America and
vice-versa if I can't even figure out how to resolve a conflict
with one other person, y'know, so...
[Laughter]
Carson: Fair enough, yeah, we mentioned that you had uh, written
and produced this record, could you ever go back and do another
record where you sh-- shared duties?...
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: ...Didn't have the control that you just had on this one
Alanis: I mean I had a lot of control in one sense, and in
another sense I feel like I facilitated in a way that I hadn't
before in the sense that you know I'm not an island by any means
so it was a very collaborative synergistic environment that was,
that was created, so, I still consider myself to be a
collaborator, to the 'n'th degree
Carson: There were initially twenty-seven songs written for the
record...
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: Cut down to eleven
Alanis: Mmhmm
Carson: And, and, and do you make that cut?
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: What happens to those other songs? Why is this, opposed
to like a record company which will often come in and wanna pick
and choose and stuff but ...
Alanis: Right, um, no, not in this case, um, I think the other
songs will at some point be put into a volume two of sorts 'cause
I'd love to share them, I just don't know when, over the next
year
Carson: Do you do any of the other songs in concert?
Alanis: We did for awhile but I haven't lately, we're doing more
showcase tours right now in Europe and stuff
Carson: Right
Alanis: But during the tour I will
Carson: I wanna talk a little bit about a song, one that I
particularly liked which was a hidden track off Jagged. If you
went five minutes and twelve seconds past track thirteen you
would discover this. I dunno who finds these but I did...
[Applause] ...It's a song called Your House... tell me about this
song
Alanis: Um, we had finished writing the record and uh, and we
wanted to keep writing, and uh, and this is often the case when
I'm finishing a record, I get a whole new burst of wanting to
continue to write, so we wrote Your House in about ten minutes,
it's called Your House, and uh, we had it to music at first but
then we just kinda put the guitar down, and, and I just sang it a
cappella so that's what it was begging to be
Carson: Is this one of the few songs that sort of written in a,
in a fictitious way, most everything is pretty real
Alanis: Yeah it was the only one that wasn't autobiographical,
and uh, it's a good thing too because in the, in this song it
kind of implies that I broke into someone's house which [Laughs]
so....
Carson: I would love to hear it if you wouldn't mind playing it
for us tonight would you?
Alanis: Sure
[Applause]
Carson: Uh, doing the song Your House, she's got the voice, she's
gonna do it, alright, Alanis Morissette everybody!
[Alanis perfoms Your House (a cappella)]
I went to your house
Walked up the stairs
I opened your door
Without ringing the bell
Walked down the hall
Into your room
Where I could smell you
And I
Shouldnt be here
Without permission
I shouldnt be he-e-ere
Would you forgive me love
If I dance in your shower?
Would you forgive me lo-o-ove
If I laid in your bed?
Would you forgive me love
If I stay all afternoon?
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
I walk--... took off my clothes
Put on your robe
And I went through your drawers
And I found your cologne
Went down to the den
Found your CDs
And I played your Jo-oni-i
And I
Shouldnt stay long
You might be home soon
I shouldnt stay lo-ong
Would you forgive me love
If I dance in your shower?
Would you forgive me lo-o-ove
If I laid in your bed?
Would you forgive me love
If I stay all afternoon
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
I burned your incense
I ran a bath
And I noticed a letter that sat on your desk
It said Hello love,
I love you so love
Meet me at mi-idnight
And no,
It wasnt my writing
I better go soon
It wasnt my writing
So forgive me love
If I cry in your shower
So forgive me lo-o-ove
For the salt in your bed
So forgive me love
If I cry all afternoon
Oh oh oh oh
[Applause]
Carson: You're the most talented woman I've ever seen. We'll be
right back, more with Alanis Morissette on Last Call right after
this

So
Unsexy (From Last Call with Carson Daly, February 27th, 2002)
[Return from Commercial to applause]
Carson: Hey welcome back to Last Call, here with Alanis
Morissette. Under Rug Swept is out and I wanna talk a little bit
about the music industry for a second
Alanis: Okay
Carson: Uh, it's common for these sort of uh, uh I guess we could
call 'em diamond-selling artists, these, these ten-million plus
artists, whether it's Dave Matthews or uh, or Fred Durst/Limp
Bizkit, Dr. Dre... seemingly they all sort of get into the
business and create their own labels
Alanis: Right
Carson: And we see them on red carpets with their little protégés and with
people that they are helping, I guess... get a break. Is that
something that has ever interested you or, uh, why not?
Alanis: I don't know about forming my own label, that's something
that I, I have an opportunity to do I think as anyone does
really, but I haven't had a desire to do so yet, and until I do I
won't, but in terms of supporting people and nurturing them and
y'know being a place that they can come to, to get, not advice
really but more just support, I'm always there and I do that all
the time with several of my friends certainly, and a lot of other
people too.
Carson: Uh, the lead track off the record is, um, called 21
Things, and uh, tell me about this song, I know, I guess it's
poking fun at, at this sort of list that you have about 21 things
that a guy needs to have...
[Applause/Laughter]
Alanis: It's twenty-one --....
Carson: Why only twenty-one by the way?
Alanis: Well twenty-one is an abridged version, it's like 343,000
things
[Laughter]
Carson: Oh really?
Alanis: Um, 21 Things I Want In A Lover... the operative word in
the song to me is just y'know, it's a preference rather than an
expectation 'cause expectations you're just sure to be
disappointed, but a preference is just kinda putting it out
there, and then you, and you see what life has to offer
Carson: Well is like eighteen out of twenty-one alright? I mean
....
Alanis: I think eighty percent is pretty great
Carson: Pretty, pretty damn good right?
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: Now do you actually have a list that you, that you keep
with these, this sort of uh...
Alanis: I've written lists since I was y'know six
Carson: Now, like what's something weird off this list, y'know?
Can you just ... that's not in the song
Alanis: Umm... oh wow
Carson: Like maybe two thousand four hundred and one...
Alanis (laughing): Okay
Carson: Can you recall that one?
Alanis (pondering): Okay let's see ... somebody that can uh, have
physical body humour, like someone that can take a fall to
make... to get a laugh, y'know? [Laughter] Someone who would
break their neck and do some serious crazy dancing
Carson: Okay, right.... that's a tough one!
Alanis (Laughing): OK!
Carson: Um, you uh, are gonna do So Unsexy for us tonight, and I
would love for you to, to, to tell us about this song [Cheers
from audience] Is this just about maybe just a time or a day
when, and I dunno if it's you or not, when you're just sort of
not feeling it?
Alanis: Yeah, I mean not feeling it ... I've been in
relationships over the years where I just didn't feel it in the
relationship and I slowly kinda atrophied into, just having...
Carson: So it's not how you feel about yourself, it's actually
another relationship
Alanis: No, it's about how I felt about myself ...
Alanis & Carson: ... in the relationship
Alanis: ... so, um, you know, and I have moment of it all the
time, and um, just the lyrics in the song that I actually think
is one of the most important lyrics to me anyway in the record
is, is just the concept of when I'm not taking care of myself, or
I don't have my own back, pretty much anything can affect me. But
if I'm taking care of myself, nothing really affects me that much
so...
Carson: Great. You're gonna do it for us right now?
Alanis: Sure
Carson: Alanis Morissette, the album is Under Rug Swept, here she
is doing So Unsexy.
[Applause]
[Alanis performs So Unsexy:]
Oh these little rejections how they add up quickly
One small sideways look and I feel so ungood and
Somewhere along the way I think I gave you the power to make
Me feel the way I thought only my father could
Oh these little rejections how they seem so real to me
One forgotten birthday I'm all but cooked and
How these little abandonments seem to sting so easily
I'm thirteen again am I thirteen for good?
I can feel so unsexy for someone so beautiful
So unlovèd for someone so fine
I can feel so boring for someone so interesting
So ignorant for someone of sound mind
Oh these little protections how they fail to serve me
One forgotten phone call and I'm deflated and
Oh these little defenses how they fail to comfort me
Your hand pulling away and I'm devastated
I can feel so unsexy for someone so beautiful
So unlovèd for someone so fine
I can feel so boring for someone so interesting
So ignorant for someone of sound mind
When will I stop leaving baby-y?
When will I stop deserting baby-y?
When will I start staying with myse-e-e-e-e-e-elf?
Oh these little projections how they keep springing from me
I jump my ship as I take it personally and
How these little rejections how they disappear quickly
The moment I decide not to abandon me
I can feel so unsexy for someone so beautiful
So unlovèd for someone so fine
I can feel so boring for someone so interesting
So ignorant for someone of sound mind
[Applause]
