IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING WHY I HAVE SEPARATE LYRICS TO THE LIVE PERFORMANCES: As we all know, when a performer performs something live, it's got slight differences to the original. The same goes with Alanis, so when she sings something, it's a little different each time, so that's why I felt like I should put up lyrics to her live performances, as well as the interviews that often go with them. In addition, since my lyrics include the um's oh's ooh's and other sounds like that, and they change greatly for each performance, that is why I have included them.

performers of the night, Alanis (one of the organisers of the

Alanis: Thank you. Welcome everybody, thank you so much for being
here. Peace. Thank you so much being here everyone. I very much
appreciate your all coming tonight; contributing your time and
your energy and your, your contributions to what will benefit,
what will benefit the, the UN relief and uh, sending love to a
country and a culture that needs a lot of it right now I think.
I'd like to thank everyone who's taking part in this on our inner
circle here that we contributed to making tonight possible.
Everyone has contributed their time and money very generously and
I thank them each, thank you all each for being here. And I'd
also like to thank all the bands and bandmates that've
contributed their time and their geniosity [sic] tonight and I'd
like to start the evening off by introducing to you someone who's
filled with integrity and is as prolific as his is
contributing... and what's most impressive and inspiring about
the man I'm about to introduce is his ability to not only do acts
of contribution that contribute to society but also to be it more
so than anything else, and without further ado I'd like to

Rick: And we're backstage but don't worry there's a whole bunch
more Tragically Hip coming up, but right now I'm here with
Alanis, known all over the world as a big international
superstar, here as an Ottawa girl. Now Alanis, you not only
performed live tonight of course, but you were very instrumental
in producing this concert, making it happen. Everyone wants to do
something in this crisis, but uh, what made you kinda get up out
of bed one morning and go "I'm gonna do this giant thing,
I'm gonna do this big rock concert."?
Alanis: Well the first thing I thought literally moments after it
happened was that not only did I wanna cancel everything that I
had booked beforehand that had at that point nothing to do with
it because it didn't exist...
Rick: Right
Alanis: ... but I wanted to really contribute in whatever way I
could and, uh, Gordon Downie from Tragically Hip had mentioned
wanting to do something, and I really wanted to do something, so
I dive in with my manager and we reached out to a bunch of our
friends and, and fellow artists and aa lot of them said yes,
obviously, so it was just something that organically came to
be...
Rick: Right
Alanis: ... just from inspiration.
Rick: Have you every seen anything like this take place, like on
this scale for some, you know, for humanitarian aid, this many
artists coming together, I mean I can't think.... [trails off and
mutters incoherently]
Alanis: You mean in Canada?
Rick: Yeah
Alanis: Um, I, I haven't experienced it myself but I'm sure
there's been times...
Rick: Right
Alanis: ... where people have come together to do things, but,
but nothing, you know, they're all distinctly unique, so nothing
of the, of this ilk.
Rick: Right

Clean (From the Today Show, February 21st, 2002)
Matt: Hockey and figure skating are not the only hot tickets in
Salt Lake City these days. With the release of her new album
Under Rug Swept just about a week away, Alanis Morissette is
prepared to perform after the medal ceremony tonight and she's
expected to draw a huge crowd. She's drawn a nice intimate crowd
this morning [Alanis laughs] on the Today Show. Alanis nice to
see you
Alanis: Nice to see you
Matt: Is this just an, I don't mean this one here, but tonight,
is it just another gig for you?
Alanis: It's the, it's the sort of inaugaural moments of the new
chapter of this record for us, so...
Matt: What's it, what's it gonna be like though, performing after
a medals ceremony, is that a little different?
Alanis: Well it's, it's uh, an interesting juxtaposition having,
you know, athleticism and art together, but they're both, you
know, pretty passionate and inspired things to do, so I think
there's a thread of continuity between the two.
Matt: The new album, from what I read, is the first time you
haven't worked with a co-writer or a producer
Alanis: Yeah
Matt: Why go it alone?
Alanis: Natural step in my evolution I think. I've been making
records for a long time and it's more out of curiosity I think
than anything else to see what it would soung like, like on my
own, but it, it's a collaborative experience regardless, 'cause
I'm not an island.
Matt: So many of your, of your songs in the past have been very
personal, same true with this album?
Alanis: Yeah, more than ever I think
Matt: One of the songs, Hands Clean, has been getting a lot of
attention, tell me, in you, what is that about?
Alanis: Um, it's a virtual dialogue of sorts, the verses and the
B sections, the person who the song's about speak to me in the
past and then I respond to him in the present in the choruses and
the bridge
Matt: About a very personal relationship as well
Alanis: Yes
Matt: What, is that what you're gonna play for us this morning?
Alanis: We'll play it first yes

beautiful, you should be very proud of it
Alanis: Thank you, I'm really happy about it
Rosie: Yeah and, and you were at the Olympics?!
Alanis: I was
Rosie: How did you like that?
Alanis: It was an amazing experience, I, I have issues with
competition a lot of times so ...

Alanis: ... part of me though, y'know, what's gonna happen when
I'm there with all this competition happening but it was lovely
and competition can be fun
Rosie: Yeah, and you know when someone like Apollo Anton Onho,
when he won the silver and was just as happy...

Rosie: I thought it was a very beautiful event
Alanis: It was much more of a sense of unity this time than I had
ever seen before so it was really sweet
Rosie: Did you feel a lot of pressure performing at the Olympics?
Or not particularly, it was more fun right?
Alanis: When I was playing hockey you mean?
Rosie: No no no [laughter] y'know when you were doing the triple
toe loop?
Alanis: Yes...

Alanis: No, yes, uh, I didn't feel pressured

Alanis: But I felt happy to be there

Alanis: Uh, both tours were a little over a year and a half

different city every day, you know wake up not know where you are
sometimes?
Alanis: I'm actually having the best time ever on this tour to be

eyes are more open

you or, y'know I was at w-... m-... Madonna's studio when she
recorded that song for [A] League Of Their Own, This Used To Be
My Playground. She had a full orchestra there ...

Rosie: ... She said, stopped them playing and said "One of
the violas is sharp"
Alanis: Right
Rosie: There're like eight violas and they're all going [imitates
playing of viola], she goes "That one!"
Alanis: Right
Rosie: I thought the ability to hear that ...

Rosie: ... is something that people can't like ... somebody who
can't do it, me, it's sort of hard to imagine that someone can
Alanis: Yeah your ears get finely tuned to hearing certain things
and I'm still getting there too myself, so...

Alanis: Once it really represents exactly where I'm at, um, I
consider it to be successful in my definition of it so it really
was, the second it's finished being made

Gold! How 'bout that hockey team? You musta been thrilled, who
were you rooting for?
Alanis (sarcastically): Um, I wonder...

Carson: Hmm. You spend so much time here in the states, you do

Alanis: No, I actually have, have loyalty to Canada, but I'm also
the exact person that, that cheers when either team scores
Carson: Right
Alanis: So I'm not a nationalist, but I definitely have some, you
know, some familiarity with the Canadians for obvious reasons

Carson: And welcome back to Last Call. Alanis Morissette's first
album Jagged Little Pill sold twenty-eight million copies
worldwide. Her next album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie,
was another multi-platinum success. She's won seven Grammy's and
is here with us tonight, and I've had a chance to know you since
back in the day....
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: ... of Jagged Little Pill. I think I did your second
interview ever in America?
Alanis: Right
Carson: And um, uh, going back to that record, is ther ever a, a
time when ya just wish that it was uh, a, a good record?
Alanis (laughing): As opposed to a horrible record?
Carson: And, and not like the record of the decade as they have
labelled it?
Alanis: I don't have any regrets, I wouldn't change a damn thing
but it was overwhelming, and uh ...
[Applause]
Carson: You didn't feel like that set you on a path where it's
just like, oh buy.... you know sort of... y'know... it's like
getting a Porsche when it's your first car when you were sixteen?
Alanis: It did sort of, you know, raise the bar to the point
where relativity was always gonna be a difficult one to, to
follow up in terms of it being compared
Carson: Right
Alanis: Anything I did after compared to Jagged Little Pill, but
y'know I dealt with that pressure and now I know what it's like
to deal with pressure and I can help other people who're dealing
with pressure
Carson: I wanna talk about what you choose to write about in
music, so many people draw from a lot of different things,
whether it's political or social or something extremely personal,
um, the notion of relationships seems to be something that uh,
you, you write a lot about, why is that?
Alanis: Um, because I think it's a microcosm of what the broader
issues are, you know farbeit for me to have an opinion formed
about what I think the Middle East should do with America and
vice-versa if I can't even figure out how to resolve a conflict
with one other person, y'know, so...
[Laughter]
Carson: Fair enough, yeah, we mentioned that you had uh, written
and produced this record, could you ever go back and do another
record where you sh-- shared duties?...
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: ...Didn't have the control that you just had on this one
Alanis: I mean I had a lot of control in one sense, and in
another sense I feel like I facilitated in a way that I hadn't
before in the sense that you know I'm not an island by any means
so it was a very collaborative synergistic environment that was,
that was created, so, I still consider myself to be a
collaborator, to the 'n'th degree
Carson: There were initially twenty-seven songs written for the
record...
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: Cut down to eleven
Alanis: Mmhmm
Carson: And, and, and do you make that cut?
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: What happens to those other songs? Why is this, opposed
to like a record company which will often come in and wanna pick
and choose and stuff but ...
Alanis: Right, um, no, not in this case, um, I think the other
songs will at some point be put into a volume two of sorts 'cause
I'd love to share them, I just don't know when, over the next
year
Carson: Do you do any of the other songs in concert?
Alanis: We did for awhile but I haven't lately, we're doing more
showcase tours right now in Europe and stuff
Carson: Right
Alanis: But during the tour I will
Carson: I wanna talk a little bit about a song, one that I
particularly liked which was a hidden track off Jagged. If you
went five minutes and twelve seconds past track thirteen you
would discover this. I dunno who finds these but I did...
[Applause] ...It's a song called Your House... tell me about this
song
Alanis: Um, we had finished writing the record and uh, and we
wanted to keep writing, and uh, and this is often the case when
I'm finishing a record, I get a whole new burst of wanting to
continue to write, so we wrote Your House in about ten minutes,
it's called Your House, and uh, we had it to music at first but
then we just kinda put the guitar down, and, and I just sang it a
cappella so that's what it was begging to be
Carson: Is this one of the few songs that sort of written in a,
in a fictitious way, most everything is pretty real
Alanis: Yeah it was the only one that wasn't autobiographical,
and uh, it's a good thing too because in the, in this song it
kind of implies that I broke into someone's house which [Laughs]
so....
Carson: I would love to hear it if you wouldn't mind playing it

Morissette. Under Rug Swept is out and I wanna talk a little bit
about the music industry for a second
Alanis: Okay
Carson: Uh, it's common for these sort of uh, uh I guess we could
call 'em diamond-selling artists, these, these ten-million plus
artists, whether it's Dave Matthews or uh, or Fred Durst/Limp
Bizkit, Dr. Dre... seemingly they all sort of get into the
business and create their own labels
Alanis: Right
Carson: And we see them on red carpets with their little protégés and with
people that they are helping, I guess... get a break. Is that
something that has ever interested you or, uh, why not?
Alanis: I don't know about forming my own label, that's something
that I, I have an opportunity to do I think as anyone does
really, but I haven't had a desire to do so yet, and until I do I
won't, but in terms of supporting people and nurturing them and
y'know being a place that they can come to, to get, not advice
really but more just support, I'm always there and I do that all
the time with several of my friends certainly, and a lot of other
people too.
Carson: Uh, the lead track off the record is, um, called 21
Things, and uh, tell me about this song, I know, I guess it's
poking fun at, at this sort of list that you have about 21 things
that a guy needs to have...
[Applause/Laughter]
Alanis: It's twenty-one --....
Carson: Why only twenty-one by the way?
Alanis: Well twenty-one is an abridged version, it's like 343,000
things
[Laughter]
Carson: Oh really?
Alanis: Um, 21 Things I Want In A Lover... the operative word in
the song to me is just y'know, it's a preference rather than an
expectation 'cause expectations you're just sure to be
disappointed, but a preference is just kinda putting it out
there, and then you, and you see what life has to offer
Carson: Well is like eighteen out of twenty-one alright? I mean
....
Alanis: I think eighty percent is pretty great
Carson: Pretty, pretty damn good right?
Alanis: Yeah
Carson: Now do you actually have a list that you, that you keep
with these, this sort of uh...
Alanis: I've written lists since I was y'know six
