Saturday Tutoring Program Sponsors Career Day
For many people, choosing a career is a tough decision. On November 18, 2006, the Saturday Tutoring Program held a career day to encourage the students to begin thinking about career possibilities. A group of 64 students and 22 chaperones participated.
At Covenant, the older students met several volunteers who described their work. The volunteers showed the students the "tools of their trades" and got them involved in related activities.
Earlier in the day, these students had visited one of Case's computer labs to research career, college, and scholarship information on the Internet. They sat in a real college classroom, where they discussed career choices, kindness, study habits, and time management.
Meanwhile, the younger students viewed a film entitled, The Boy Who Drew Cats. This Japanese folktale is about finding one's place in the world. The students reflected on the story through drawing, discussion, and role-playing. Then they, too, visited career websites and spent time in the college classroom.
Special thanks to the volunteers who shared their time with the students:
- Nancy told the students about her work as a professional photographer and studio owner. Tenth-grader DeNiro liked editing photos and asked where he could get image-editing software for his own computer.
- Fred explained how he learned carpentry and showed the students some of the tools he uses. Eighth-grader Darren plans to find out more about construction trades.
- Case pre-med student Dan told the students about careers in health care. She frequently tutors Ashley, a twelfth-grader who has decided to be a medical laboratory technologist.
- Mary Anne showed the students the information that she uses as a software resource manager. They liked the idea that workers' tasks could vary from day to day.
- Paralegal studies professor Jules had the students practice questioning witnesses for a court case. She told one student, "That's exactly the kind of question you should ask! You should be in my class."
- Fred, who engineers software for CT scanners, showed the students scans, X-rays, and a scanner model. Eighth-grader LaVera studied the scans closely and could recognize various organs in the body.
- Jean, a retired speech therapist, asked the students about their interests and goals. She truly listened as they told her about themselves.
