CIM Makes Beautiful Music During and After Tutoring
On March 31, 2012, The Saturday Tutoring Program was honored to have Cleveland Institute of Music tutors and their friends present CIM in Concert @ Covenant!
Prior to the concert, the musicians strolled through the tutoring rooms to interact with the students and to allow them to see their instruments up close. After the two-hour tutoring session and a short recess outside, the students and tutors entered the Church of the Covenant's sanctuary. The students and tutors were in awe. They were impressed with the size of the room, the brightness of the lights, and beauty of the windows and woodcarvings. The kids were equally impressed to see the CIM performers in formal attire.
Cally, one of the tutors in attendance, said, “As the performance began, the children settled into their seats and watched each performance intently. For many of the children, especially the younger ones, watching a live concert was a new experience for them. Watching them as they enjoyed the experience was priceless.”
The musicians performed a variety of selections, including classical pieces and contemporary songs like the Beatles' Hey Jude and Lady GaGa's Bad Romance. Michael took his oboe apart and let the group hear the sound of the double-reed. Becca alerted us to the “playful back and forth” of her violin and the piano accompaniment. Michael, a violinist, demonstrated the low and high notes of his instrument. An ensemble (violin, viola, cello) played their parts separately so the group could hear each instrument alone, from the deep sounds of the cello to the high sounds of the violin.
Corttrell, another of the many tutors who chaperoned the event, said, “The performances were simply amazing. The students were inspired to see some of their favorite tutors share the special gift of making beautiful music. They were all astounded by the amount of time, dedication, and hard work that the performers put into learning how to play their instruments.“
To close the concert, all of the performers played and sang a moving rendition of Amazing Grace, to which everyone was invited to sing along. This event celebrated the 22nd year of The Saturday Tutoring Program at the Church of the Covenant. Our thanks go out to CIM tutor Natalie Dyck and Chris Haff-Paluck, Director of Performance and Community Programs, for organizing the event.
