Welcome to My
Strategy Guide
Here is a Strategy Guide for Warcraft 2 that I typed up myself. It has strategies, tips, and ideas that you can use when you play Warcraft 2. I think I am pretty good at the game, but you probably will disagree with some ideas said in this strategy guide.
DEFENDING YOUR BASE
The way I see it is the only way to build a good offense is to have a good defense. If you have a good defense, you can harvest wood and mine gold faster, therefore you can make a powerful offense. I use lots of towers and lots of walls (when playing multi player games). It is very good to have a tower with wall surrounding most of it because it is harder for enemy ground units to attack it.
Scout Towers can be used to see long distances on the map. They are very weak and need to be upgraded as quickly as possible.
Guard Towers are a great defense! They can attack all air, land, and sea objects. They have great aim and will never harm your own men. Their shots aren't as strong as cannon towers but when many guard towers are placed together, they can be proved to be very useful and strong. They also fire their arrows rather quickly.
Cannon Towers are very strong, but very slow. They are effective against massive land attacks, but are useless to gryphons and dragons. If your man is attacking one of theirs, the cannon tower can miss their's and hit yours!
A great way to defend your base against computers is to build guard towers at your main entrance of your base, and put walls COMPLETELY around the tower(s) except for one whole that is facing your base. Than if the enemy wants to attack the tower, (and he will), he will have to travel completely around your tower to get to the whole and by then, he will die if there are numerous towers. Also, put lots of walls in front of your towers that zig and zag around. The computer will have to walk around curves of walls and will get injured while he's walking. Here is an example of that:
See? With those walls out there, the enemy has to walk around the walls (remember, you can walk through corners) and the towers can reach him right when he is out there. So while he's walking, those towers are hitting them and hurting them =) But be careful if they have gryphons or dragons. They can send their gryphons or dragons from the side of your base, and if you have no archers/axe throwers or guard towers within your base, they can get a clean shot at killing your peons/peasants that are mining gold.
TOWER WEAKNESSES
But of course, in Warcraft, everything has a weakness. Unfortunately, towers have 2 of them. Ballistas/Catapults and Mages/Death Knights. When making Ballistas/Catapults, if you have a good amount of gold, upgrade them to level 2. The level 3 upgrade is absurd, I think. It costs too much money, and it doesn't upgrade your catapult/ballistas high enough. If your enemy has made a lot of towers, (like I love to do), you will need to make some catapult/ballistas or Mages/Death Knights knights. If you get a mage tower or a temple of the damned, quickly research death and decay or Blizzard. Blizzard/D&D are very powerful spells and if used correctly, they can prove useful and worth the 2500 for the spell. If you see a catapult or ballista outside of your base, immediately send some men to attack it before it gets a shot at one of your towers. If you are attacking a base with towers, send a catapult/ballista and bring some knight/ogres with it, so when they come to attack your catapult/ballista, you can attack them while your cat./ball. attacks the towers. Dwarven Demolition Squads and Sappers can also destroy towers, but aren't very good against groups of towers. If you have 3 guard towers next to each other, Dwarvens/Sappers can never destroy them (unless Haste is casted on it).
MAGES
If you create Mages, be sure to get Blizzard and slow. Blizzard is a spell that can be used just about anywhere including, doing Mage bombs. Mage bombs are when you send a Mage up to an enemy base and when you get there, immediately cast Blizzard on top of where they keep most of their army. Automatically, computer will make them send their whole army out to get you. When that happens, cast Blizzard in front of you. While they are coming to get you most of their army will get injured severely >:) Slow is a good spell to get because if you are being chased by an enemy unit, you can cast Slow on them and get your Mage out of there quickly. It is also a good spell when you cast it on cat./balls. because they will be very slow and won't be able to fire much. You start with Lightning Attack attack and Fireball. Lightning attack is just a way of attacking and Fireball is a spell that shoots a fireball. Fireball takes way too much mana and is very weak. If you are good at the game, you will want to get Invisibility. You'll figure out great ways to use this spell to your advantage. Don't only cast Flame Shield on yourself. If computer has a large army in a group, cast Flame Shield on the person in the middle and watch them crumble. The Polymorph spell sucks. It takes entirely way too much mana and only kills one man. It is not worth the upgrade.
DEATH KNIGHTS
Death knights are really good too, except for their weakness which is Paladins. Paladins can Excorcize Death Knights knights and kill them easily. Be careful of Paladins if you are moving large amounts of Death Knights knights. The Death Coil spell is really cool because not only does it kill enemies, it increases your Death Knight's health and it comes with your Death Knights like Fireball! Death and Decay is the same thing as Blizzard and works just as well except for something I do not understand. If you read the Warcraft 2 manual that comes with the game, under the spell Death And Decay, it says it can destroy metal and wood. Aren't trees made out of wood? If you cast Death And Decay on trees, it does not destroy them. Why? Whirlwind is a pretty fun spell if you have a lot of Death Knights with a lot of mana. Gather a couple of Death Knights outside of your enemy's base and cast Whirlwind throughout their base. If the enemy's men come to attack your Death Knights, your only chance is to either cast Death and Decay in front of you or to cast Haste on each of your Death Knights and run away. The Whirlwinds last for like a minute and can do some damage on important buildings! =) Haste is a VERY good spell when used with Bloodlust. If you have Dragons, Ogre-Mages, and Death Knights cast Haste and Bloodlust on some dragons and send them into an enemy's base immediately. They can kill towers in seconds are very very powerful. I call them Darts. Darts are powerful, but can prove costly. Unholy Armor and Raise The Dead are also great spells. After finishing a small battle with another clan, just cast Raise The Dead on the dead bodies and gain free men! The skeletons you gain are weak and will die after 10 minutes, but it's worth it. Use Holy Vision to view parts of the map that you cannot see.
PALADINS
Paladins are the ultimate land attack unit when using Humans. Research Healing quickly after upgrading to Paladins because if the computer/human enemy has Healing or Bloodlust before you do, you will probably lose. After battles with computer, cast Healing on your weak men and watch them gain strength. Paladins also have the Excorcizm spell which when you cast it on Death Knights, Skeletons, and/or Dameons they will be hurt. Keep in mind that you cast Excorcizm on an area and not a person.
OGRES
Ogres are big, fat, naked, and stupid. The Warcraft 2 manual says that even though they have 2 heads, they are still more stupid than peons. After upgrading to Ogre-Mages, get the Bloodlust spell. Bloodlust is a spell for offense and Healing is for defense. I prefer Bloodlust over Healing. Your enemy may have lots of towers and a big army, but when you send 9 Bloodlusted Ogres into their base, you have a very strong chance of winning or at least destroying what they have. Bloodlust can be the influence on whether you end in victory or defeat. Runes is a nifty spell too. Cast Runes outside your base, (when your not planning on going anywhere), and wait for the computer to come. Runes is like a landmine that blows up when people step on it. Cast Runes in the path of the enemy's town hall to their mine and watch their peons blow up. Keep in mind, Runes disappears after a while. Eye of Kilrogg sucks too. It is only good if you want to find out where the other teams are because you cannot view groups of space with it, just lots of space across the map. Holy Vision is much better for viewing accross the map.
AXE THROWERS AND ARCHERS or BEZERKERS AND RANGERS
Axe Throwers (Axes) and Archers are the ultimate land unit in Warcraft. They can attack land, air, and sea. Their hits may be weak, and they may die quickly, but they are very strong. After you have upgraded to Rangers, upgrade Marksmanship and if you're playing with Fog of War on, get Scouting. For Bezerkers, get Regeneration! It automatically heals your Bezerkers. It may take a while, but in the long run, it will help too.
DWARVENS AND SAPPERS
Dwarvens and Sappers are feisty little creatures that are very good against towers. If there are bunches of towers, it will be hard to destroy any, but when there are one or two alone, Dwarvens and Sappers have easy targets. If computer has many Paladins are Footmen close together, send a Dwarven/Sapper within the group and blow up! They can be very annoying against the other teams and if there are groups of guys (that can't attack by range) standing in the middle of the woods, send Dwarvens/Sappers to chase them around >:)
NAVY AND SHIPS
I don't use ships very much and I'm not too good with them, but I do have a few hints that could help. If your enemy likes to build big, strong navy made up of lots of Battleships/Juggernauts and Submarines/Giant Turtles, I make Gryphons/Dragons. Gryphons/Dragons aren't very good in land attack because they are expensive, slow, and die easily. If they don't have many Destroyers or towers, make Gryphons. Try to take over many oil patches so the computer doesn't get any oil.
ORCS OR HUMANS?¿?
To be Human or Orc? That is the question. My answer is......ORC! I think Orcs are better than Humans in numerous ways. The main way is because they have BLOODLUST. I use Bloodlust all the time and I think it is better than Healing. I am a more offensive player even though I like to make lots of Towers. Some people play better with Humans, but I play better with Orcs. Another reason I think Orcs are better is the spell Death Coil. Not only does it kill men, it increases the caster's energy. Also, when you cast Death Coil on a person, even though it may look like he moved out of the way of the Coil, he still gets hurt by it. YaY! The way I play is, if I'm Orc I build an Alchemist near the beginning to get a Zepplin. If i'm Human I get Paladins quickly so I can use Holy Vision. I don't want to have to view the map by using Eye Of Killrogg.
OTHER IDEAS
Other Ideas are if you know where your enemy is located, try using the "Early Footman Attack". That is where you make a farm when you start. Than you make a Barracks. Now you train a footman, while your peasant builds more farms. Make about 5 or 6 Footmen and than go send them to attack. Your enemy will probably have finished his Blacksmith or Lumber Mill by now so you can destroy them =) Other GREAT ideas are to build walls. If you have a wall computer NEVER attacks it. So if you have 2 openings to your base, protect one with men and towers, and just put a wall on the other end so that computer can't get in. Keep in mind, you can only build walls in Multi-Player games, but I think there is a patch you can download to your Warcraft that allows you to build walls in your Single Player games. Don't base your game on Dragons/Gryphons like the computer does sometimes because they are costly, slow, and die easily. Many of my friends base their games on only Paladins and Mages. I think it's a pretty good idea and is effective. Also try the "5 peon attack". First, build a hall, than a farm, make 5 peons, go to the enemies' base and kill the peons that are harvesting wood first. Than wall in their gold mine!
USE THE RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON + KEYBOARD
Most beginners just use the mouse. The good players use the the mouse
and keyboard.. The really talented players use the keyboard and all the mouse. Using
the right mouse button will usually save seconds that can be vital to your victory! Here are some people that using right-click helps.
Peon
Right Click on: Damaged building = Repair
Right click on: Gold Mine, Trees = Mine, Harvest
Right Click on: Ground = Move
All other attack units
Right click on enemy or enemy building = Attack
Right click on ground = Move
Sappers
Right click on enemy unit click = Explode
Also, to use the keyboard, study the words when you move your cursor over a button when you are clicked on a player. One letter from the word will be highlighted in yellow. If you press that letter on your keyboard when you are clicked on that person, he will do what it would do if you clicked the button.
