John C. Caldwell was born on April 17, 1833, in Lowell, VT.
He was a teacher prior to the Civil War.
War Service: November 1861 Col. of 11th Maine, appointed Brigad. General of Volunteers (April 1862) commanding 1st Brigade/1st Division/II Corps, Peninsula campaign, Fredericksburg (wounded), Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, relieved of duty in Army of the Potomac March 1864.
Post War Career: Lawyer, US consul in Valparaiso, US minister to Uruguay, US consul in Costa Rica. In addition, he served in the honor guard in the procession of Lincoln's body from Washington to Springfield. He died on August 31, 1912, in Calais, ME.
