The Unsung Heroes of 624 R.A.F
(SPECIAL DUTIES) SQUADRON

(formerly 1575 flight)

This site is dedicated to the men who served with the RAF Special Operations Squadron

based at Blida Algeria 1943 - 44, especially in Memory of Sgt. Edmund HURST who whilst Serving as Flt/Eng on Halifax JN.896 was killed on 14 August 1944 when the aircraft exploded and plunged into the sea off the coast of Spain after completing its mission.

The Handley-Page HALIFAX

Halifax Squadrons
Although not a well known aircraft (compared to the 'Lancaster'), many Squadrons were linked with the Halifax. On site, there is listed 76 different Squadrons, (not a complete list), some with Sqn. badges and the occasional short Squadron history included. Some also have photos supplied by ex-Squadron personnel. Occasionally, and as equally as important, we have photos of the ground crews who helped keep the Halifaxes flying..........Do you recognise anyone ??

IN MEMORIUM P.O. Leslie Arthur Peers 1917-1944.

At the age of 27, on July 13, 1944 Leslie was entrusted with a special operation along with the rest of the RCAF, 624(Tiger) Squadron. It would be his last. After crossing the Pyrenees, while attempting to land with supplies for the French Underground, he hit a mountain near the village of Nistos, France. The bodies of the crew members were recovered by members of the resistance and buried beside the wreckage.
