Squall Leonhart

Squall shows little compassion toward his fellow man, and is generally very short-spoken. He wields a weapon known as the Gunblade. He attends school at Balamb Garden along with Zell Dincht, and aspires to be a member of the elite fighting force known as SeeD. Squall is a short man at only 17 years of age. Squall tends to keep to himself unless the topic being dealt with is something which interests him, at which time he can get quite lively. He is a loner and has almost no comradeship for the people around him. Around his neck Squall wears a necklace which bears a strange griffon-like symbol which can also be seen near the barrel of the Gunblade. Character designer Tetsuya Nomura wanted the character's name to have the meaning of a passing shower, which is how he came up with the name Squall. The last name, Leonheart, was the name of one of the main characters from an earlier 8-bit fantasy which never made it to the United States.
Rinoa Heartily

Rinoa is a cheerful girl with an overwhelming amount of tenderness and an unyielding spirit. She too is very honest and has no problems speaking her mind and being very straitforward with others. On the other hand though, she's a bit shy, so sometimes she has mixed or confused feelings.
Zell Dincht

Zell joined Garden when he was 13 in order to train himself to be a great soldier like his grandfather, who he admires very much. He's an honest fighter, and very straightforward; he fits into the military stereotype perfectly. He often loses his temper, but that doesn't seem to concern him very much. Zell grew up in a wealthy family. Because of this he lacks seriousness. He is a quick and lethal fighter, and a martial arts master.
Seifer Almasy

Seifer is the mysterious man who is apparently the leader of Squad B. Though he is talented, he's regarded as problematic because of his attitude and inability to properly follow orders. Because he realizes Squall is gifted, he considers him to be his rival, but could the two be linked in more ways than we've seen so far? If you'll notice, he has a scar on his face that is remarkably similar to Squall's. Seifer can also been seen battling squall in the battle FMV.
Selphie Tilmitt

Selphie is a good fighter and was reccomended for SeeD. Squall and Selfie are just classmates and they have no romantic relationship at all.
Irvine Kinnears

Irvine Kinneas, a cowboy gunslinger with a ponytail. He appears later in the game, and can join your party and partake in combat. Irvine is good at using a gun. He's a sensitive and decent guy. It is said that Irvine ISN'T a student of the Garden, but as the title goes, he has something to do with the Garden. The period when Squall was a student of the Garden is just a short time from the beginning to the partway of the game. Irvine was at the Garden at the same time. As he was not a student, what he really was at that time is unknown.
Edea
The bad guy.
Edea is a witch-like character that brainwashes members of her 'witch parade' following and controls them to defeat her enemies. It is reported that she joins forces with Seifer against Squall at some point in the game.
