Pembangkang, bersatulah!
Parti hanyalah wadah. Kenderaan untuk membawa kita ke tempat yang dituju. Dari Kuala Lumpur ke Seremban kita boleh naik kereta, boleh naik motorsikal, boleh naik keretapi komuter. Basikal pun boleh naik! Keretapun macam-macam, ada van, ada trooper. Yang penting adalah kita sampai ke tempat yang dituju. Janganlah kita menghabiskan masa berbahas tentang wadah dan berkelahi atau bersakit hati tentang kenderaan.
Kita harus bertanya apakah perjuangan politik kita sekarang? Tidak lain dan tidak bukan untuk menegakan keadilan untuk semua, memperkukuhkan demokrasi dan menghidupkan masyarakat madani. Kelahiran Parti KeADILan Nasional adalah untuk memperjuangkan matlamat ini. Tetapi perjuangan ini bukan monopoli KeADILan. Perjuangan ini memerlukan dokongan semua yang mahukan keadilan dan demokrasi. PAS juga gigih memperjuangkan. DAP juga kuat memperjuangkan. PRM juga tidak kurang memperjuangkannya.
Tujuan dan matlamat kita sama. Parti lain-lain. tetapi kita seharusnya saling lengkap melengkapi, bekerjasama untuk mencapai matlamat. Bahkan realiti politik sekarang menuntut parti-parti ini merapatkan hubungan menjadi satu pasukan yang padu. Musuh-musuh keadilan, musuh demokrasi bukanlah kecil. Mereka kuat. Kalau pejuangan keadilan dan demokrasi tidak memperkuatkan pasukan mereka pasti kita tewas.
Janganlah bergeser dalam hal-hal yang kecil dan remeh. Lihatlah kepada matlamat yang besar. Kita berdepan dengan suasana bersejarah. Buat pertama kali dalam sejarah negara kita punyai potensi menubuhkan negara atas prinsip keadilan dan demokrasi yang jitu. Rakyat jelas mahukan keadilan dan demokrasi. Rakyat mahukan masyarakat madani. Maka janganlah harapan mereka di kecewakan dan dihancurkan.
KeADILan, PAS, DAP, PRM bersatulah! Pemimpin-pemimpin parti-parti janganlah berjiwa kecil. Jangan sekadar menjadi ahli politik. Jadilah negarawan yang mampu membawa masyarakat dan negara ke tahap yang dituntut oleh rakyat. Janganlah disia-siakan perubahan bersejarah yang sudah berlaku sekarang. -- 5 April 1999
Opposition parties, unite!
A political party is only a vehicle to take us to our destination. To get from Kuala Lumpur to Seremban, we can ride in a car, we can ride a motorcycle, we can take a commuter train. We could even ride a bicycle. And then there are there are vans and there are jeeps. The important thing is that we get to where we are going. So let us not waste time debating or quarrelling or hurting each other over modes of conveyance.
We must ask ourselves what our political stuggle is about. It is none other than to establish justice for all, to strengthen democracy and to bring civil society to life. The Parti KeADILan Nasional was born so that we could fight towards these objectives. Still, the fight is not KeADILan's monopoly. It requires the support of all who want justice and democracy. PAS is also fighting hard. And DAP and PRM too.
We are all aiming at the same goal. The parties are different, but they should complement each other, cooperating towards the goal. Indeed, the current political realities demand that the various parties bind themselves into a solid team. The enemies of justice and democracy are by no means small. They are powerful. The champions of justice and democracy will lose unless they join forces as a strong team.
Don't bicker over things small and petty. Keep in view the grand purpose. We face a historic moment. Never have we had this great a chance to rebuild our nation on solid foundations of justice and democracy. The people clearly want justice and democracy. They want a civil society. So don't disappoint them and take away their hope.
KeADILan, PAS, DAP, PRM, unite! Party leaders, show how big-hearted you are. Don't be merely politicians, but statesmen who can take the nation to the exalted station where the people want it. Don't waste what history has given us.
