Modeller: Wes Dalefield, previously of Manhattan,
Kansas, USA - now somewhere in UK!

Model: Sideways-walking crab

Notes: Designed by the late Dr. Keith Cameron, and published in the Meccanoman's Newsmag,  this Marklin-powered crustacean incorporates a simple, but clever, mechanism in minimal space to achieve a sideways gait.

Model: Steeplechaser

Notes: This is a model from the Meccano magazine of August 1968. Although he concedes it is a simple model, Wes said that he had to spend a lot of time to get it balanced correctly. Once going, it is a delight to watch. It rears on its hind legs and prances forward. Here it is obviously on the warpath and is not going to let no clawed monster crawl over it!

The model instructions can be found on  Wes' Meccano Website. To go directly to the relevant page, click here.

Model: Pedalling Pete

Modeller: Graham Jost, Bentleigh East, Victoria, Australia

Notes: Pete himself is based on a design shown on David Williams' Canadian homepage. The plinth houses a motor driving four pairs of rollers on which the wheels of Pete's bicycle rest.  He is stabilised to maintain his composure, but otherwise rests solely by gravity on these rollers. At exhibitions, Pete is amongst the first to begin his labours for the day and, barring mishaps, cycles diligently at a steady pace thereafter, stopping only at closing time for a well-earned rest! The sad part is that despite all his efforts, Pete is not able to go anywhere. A neoteric Sisyphus.
