It's a bit of a toss-up. The favorite versions of the song "Jimmie
Brown the Newsboy" seem to be Flatt & Scruggs' and Norman
Blake's. Although it's known as a Carter family song, it's based
on an 1875 composition by William "Shakespeare" Hays called
"Jimmie Brown the Paper Boy," revised and retitled by A. P. Car-
ter in 1929. The main verse in the song is:
I sell the morning paper, sir; my name is Jimmie Brown; But only one recording we've found bears the exact words of
Everybody knows me: I'm the newsboy of the town.
that verse (Peter Rowan's).
In most versions it's the first verse; but in the Carter family's re-
cording (and Carl Smith's) it's the third, and the Carter family
sings:
. . . 'Most everybody knows I am the newsboy of the town.Lester Flatt, Bill Monroe, Dixie Michelle and Blueberry Hill sing:
. . . Everybody knows that I'm the newsboy of the town.Lonesome Prairie sings:
(and you can see and hear Earl Scruggs playing guitar on the
Flatt & Scruggs version!).
. . . 'Most everybody knows that I'm the newsboy of the town.Mac Wiseman sings:
. . . Everybody knows I am the newsboy of the town.Carl Smith sings:
. . . Everybody knows I am the newsboy of this town.Norman Blake sings:
