The Trapper

The Mountain Man and Trapper have been portrayed as living a tough but idilic existence. One of demanding work interspersed with contemplation of magnificient vistas and postcard scenery. Modern day presentations imply plentiful game and cozy cabins. Beautiful native girls are never far from the plot offered by Hollywood.

The truth is somewhere in between and is not the same for all Mountain Men of all times. The early Mountain Men were a variety of Explorers, Traders, Trappers, Hunters, Thieves, Miners, Philosophers and those simply seeking solidtude in nature. Most likey, the typical Mountain Man was a combination of these people.

"Line Cabins or "shacks" are primary sources of shelter for the Trapper and Hunter. They are normally constructed along waterways, from available materials, or materials that can be moved by small boats. These safe havens are used by any who are in need. Unwritten law requires replacement of fire wood and ask that the occupants do repairs as best they can.
