Scanning and uploading pictures from these early years, I realize how much coincidence rather than plans determine the life of an optimistic 18-year old.
Now age 36 and teaching students who are fresh from high school, I remember those days as glorious. But growing older -- for me at least -- reveals the importance of flexibility. In 1981, I still believed in mapping out a structured career path with all the related life decisions carefully strategized. But now I trust spontaneous impulses and let myself explore any opportunity around the corner.
