BARKER
Our Barker line has been difficult to trace due in part to the longevity of Hiram A. Barker (12 Feb 1830 - Aug 1901) and the fact he married and started our line late in life. It has taken over 10 years just to locate his parents. But with a lot of luck and help from several "cousins," we have located them

Hiram A. (Augusta ?) Barker was born in St. Lawrence Co., NY on 12 February 1830. He migrated with his family first into Wisconsin where he married, then south into Illinois.  After about thirty years he moved into Kansas.  This was sometime prior to 1879. No related Barker family has yet been found in NY.  Hiram (Jr.) served in Co. I, 11th Illinois Cavalry, during the War for Southern Independence.  His father, also named Hiram Barker, was born 21 October 1801 in Vermont, a son of Silas Barker.

Hiram's (Jr.), mother, Clarissa Ann Brunson Barker, was born in New York 4 October 1808. Hiram (Sr.) died 5 May 1884. Clarissa died 13 July 1879, both were in Walworth Co., Wisconsin. They had five children, of whom Hiram is the oldest. Two of the other children were born in New York also and one was born in Canada The youngest was born in Wisconsin where the family moved between 1843 and 1846.  A copy of an obituary for Clarissa shows their exact migration from the time of their marriage, and afirms their deep Christian faith.

The other children of Hiram (sr.) are:

1. Teressa A. Barker, bn about 1835. Teressa married Alexander Henry Button, born May 15, 1828 in  Floyd, Oneida Co., New York. Alexander was a brother to the husband of Martha (below.) He and Teressa had nine children: (a.) Eva Maria Button; (b.) Hialmer Montiela Button; (c.) Clara May Button; (d.) Henry Almer Button; (e.) Ezra Dwight Button; (f.) George Allen Button; (g.) Silas Edwin Button; (h). Frank Merrel Button; (i.) Mabelle Inez Button;

2. Priscilla A. Barker, was bn about 1839. Priscilla married Samuel Thompson Powell. They had three children: (a.) Jesse Powell; (b.) Elbert Powell; (c.) Hiram Powell.

3. Merrill M. Barker, bn about 1843 (all of Hiram's (sr) children were born in New York except Teressa who is reportedly born in Canada and Martha who was born in Wisconsin.)  Nothing more has been found on Merrill to date.

4. Martha A. Barker, bn 21 September 1846.  Martha married Ezra Wilson Button on July 02, 1866 in Walworth Co., Wisconsin.  They had no natural children, but adopted a son, Louis Charles Button.

Hiram A., the first child born to Hiram and Clarissa, was married to Isabella Atkinson on 24 December 1849.  Hiram and Isabella lived in Burritt Township, Winnebago Co., Illinois.  They were married until 1879 when she divorced him.  They had no natural children, but had raised an adopted daughter.  She was Louetta G. Barker, bn about 1854.  Louetta married Jay K. Pollock on June 25, 1873, in Winnebago Co., Illinois.

After his divorce, Hiram then migrated into Kansas where he married Edith Louise Ferguson, listed below. Hiram died in 1901, according to his military pension record and is either buried in the Burlingame Cemetery in Burlingame, Osage County, Kansas or in Marion Co., Florida.  An authority with the Burlingame cemetery archives deny the report of Hiram being interred there.  There is some validity to the challenge, as family tradition says he died and was buried in Marion County, Florida, where he moved with his two surviving sons after being divorced by Edith Louise.  Edith died on January 29, 1924, in Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., Kansas.

Hiram A. Barker bn Feb. 1832 St. Lawrence Co., NY
md 27 Feb 1879 Osage Co., KS
Edith Louise Ferguson bn 15 Sep 1860, Dutchess Co., NY
Louise was a daughter of Amos B. Ferguson and Julia Louise House

The children of Hiram and Edith:

1. Earnest A. Barker bn 18 Apr 1880 d Dec 1880

2. Orrin Charles Barker bn 16 Oct 1881 d 17 Jan 1967

3. Forrest Barker bn 4 Sep 1884 died young

4. William Calvin Barker bn 9 Dec 1887 d 5 Oct 1969

5. Elsie Julia Barker b 26 Mar 1889 d 22 Apr 1971

6. Barbara Francis Barker b 1 Nov 1890 d Sep 1966

Orrin Charles Barker, the second child of Hiram and Edith came to Florida with his father and brother William Calvin Barker in the 1890's. Hiram and Edith had divorced at this time. Hiram evidently returned to Kansas sometime after the 1900 census, as he is listed in it for Marion County, Florida.

Orrin met Edna Pasco (Paschal) Green in Marion County, Florida. Edna was born on 28 March 1888 in Marion County. She was a daughter of William Richard Green and Sarah Alice Casey. Orrin and Edna were married 16 January 1905 in Marion County, Florida.  They had eight children, all of them surviving to adulthood. They were:

1. Nadine Audrey Barker, b 13 October 1905 d 4 March 1989. She md Leo Budd Sterrett who was born 19 May 1903 in Delphi, Carroll County, Indiana.

2. William Everett Barker, Sr. b 4 February 1910 d 19 May 1967. (see below)

3. Orrin Cecil Barker, b 12 October 1914 d 3 July 1995. Md Minnie Lee Blount in Georgia.

5. Donald Ray Barker, b 22 February 1925 d 22 November 1992. Donald md Lucy Harrlene Williams.

There are three additional children who still survive.

William Everett Barker and Jennie Alma Hoilman are the parents of the author of this web page. Bill met Alma in West Palm Beach, Florida and they were married 5 November 1931 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Alma was born 3 January 1916 in Johnson City, Tennessee. She was the only child born to Florence Edith Belton and Doiley Washington Hoilman. Bill and Alma had two sons, six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Of which Marty Barker is one son.

BASSETT
William Bassett was born in Barnwell County, South Carolina about 1800.  He was a son of Elias (Eli) Bassett and possibly Rhoda Kersh.  There is some evidence to indicate that Rhoda Kersh was a widow whom William Bassett married after the death of an as yet unnamed first wife.  William emigrated first, into Georgia with his parents and settled finally in Hamilton County, Florida.  He was involved in the Seminole War, serving in the 13th Regiment, 1st Brigade of the Florida Militia.  Elias also served in the same unit, indicating he too moved into Florida.  William and his wife Aurora Towler were married about 1834.  Aurora was born in Bladen County, North Carolina on 25 November 1811.  William died in 1886 and Aurora died 31 October 1879.  They are both buried in the Anthony Cemetery in Marion County, Florida where they moved in about 1875.  Aurora was a daughter of William Robert Towler and Sarah Bryan Towler.  Sarah Bryan was a daughter of William Bryan (RS) and Sarah Singleterry. TOWLER
William R. Towler was born 9 February 1786 in North Carolina.  His wife's name was Sarah Bryan. Sarah was b about 1787.  According to available information this family migrated into Ware County, Georgia and by 1830 they were in Hamilton County, Florida.  This migration included representatives from the Bryan and Bassett families as well.  It was not uncommon in the ninteenth century for families to relocate in groups.  It served for protection against attack from natives, as well as providing a ready labor force for building homes and clearing land.  Things we consider unfortunate incidents today could have meant the difference between life and death on the frontier without dependable help.  William and Sarah were recorded in the 1850 Census for Hamilton County, Florida.  They died there and are buried in the Towler Cemetery.  This name is sometime spelled TOLLAR and TOLAR, so research should not be limited to the one spelling.  In addition to Aurora who married William Bassett, William and Sarah Towler had eleven other children:

1. Timothy Towler, b about 1809 in Bladen Co., NC. Timothy md 1.  Rachel Jennings in Hamilton County, Florida 13 September 1832.  Rachel died and Timothy md 2. Elizabeth Hooker.  Elizabeth may have outlived Tim as she d in 1876 and is buried in the Jennings Bluff Cemetery with this inscription on her headstone: " Elizabeth Jennings Wife of Lawrence Dorsey Jennings and 2nd wife of Tim Tolar."

2. Aurora Towler, wife of William Bassett already mentioned.

3. Elizabeth Towler b 23 (or 25) March 1814 in Bladen County, NC.  She md William Thomas Jennings, b 25 February 1812 and was a brother to Rachel, wife of Tim Towler. Elizabeth d 28 November 1862. William d 26 August 1891 and they are both buried in the Jennings Bluff Cemetery.

4. Lewis Bryan Towler b 1816 in Bladen County, North Carolina and migrated with the family to Hamilton County also. He md Ellender Lee in Hamilton County on 22 October 1846. Lewis died in 1901 and is buried in the Sellars Cemetery in Hamilton County, Florida.

8. Malinda Towler, the first child born to this family in Hamilton County, Florida (late) 1830. Being born so close to her sister, places the family firmly in Hamilton County, Florida in 1830. Malinda md Leonard Dees (Deas) 30 April 1848. Leonard was much older than Malinda, and may have been the father of Joseph Dees, husband of her sister Lenora.

9. Hinton J. Towler b 1831 in Hamilton County, Florida never married. He died 27 September 1852 and is buried in the Sellers Cemetery in Hamilton County, Florida.

10. Margaret Towler bn 1835 about whom nothing is known.

11. O. M. Tower bn 1838 about whom nothing is known.

12. Arrena Towler bn 1840 about whom nothing is known.

The last three children do not appear on the 1850 Census for Hamilton County, and may have died as infants. Their mother was well past her prime for child bearing by 1835.
