AN    OCEAN    OF    MEMORIES

Unsinkable

A word to describe the James Cameron film that has hit the world with as much power as the iceberg which led to the tragedy of the great ship Titanic. The film, a love story set within a historical tragedy, has touched many people, the emotions and futility of the situation that unfolds in 3 hours and 15 minutes reaching out to teach us all to love truly, and to cherish every moment we have on this earth. Indeed, "Nothing on earth could come between them", as Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater prove that love goes on beyond death.

NEVER AN ABSOLUTION

It was the Titanic's maiden voyage, the first time the "ship of dreams" set sail. Heading from Southampton, it carried some of the most influential people in the world at the time. It also carried many third class citizens, but these citizens were doomed from the moment the ship set sail. Most of those who perished belonged to the lower class travellers, and many would not have perished had the emergency procedures been more solid. From a movie standpoint, there was a severe shortage in life boats. But of course, on an "unsinkable ship", what need was there for lifeboats at all?

Who would have known that the tragedy so long ago would live on? But have we learned from the events of that fateful night?

ROSE

"You'd as like have angels fly out of yer arse as get next to the likes of her" - Tommy

From the moment Rose is seen by Jack, the love story that is the heart and soul of James Cameron's Titanic begins. Tommy's words soon prove very wrong (or perhaps the scene where the angels fly out of Jack's arse was cut? *smile*), as Jack and Rose grow closer and closer. Jack first saves Rose from death, then begins to save her troubled heart and spirit. In Jack she sees hope and freedom, things she has longed for but, until this point, has been certain she will never find. Learning to "SPIT like a man!" is but the first step towards breaking free, and learning to follow her heart.

THE SNAKE PIT

Stepping into the snake pit, Jack teaches the first class of his philosophy towards life and how to live it. His emphasis on taking the bare necessities, and living each day to make it count is not lost on Rose, nor is it lost on most of those at dinner.

And indeed we must all work to live our lives to the fullest each day, making each day with those we love count. Our tomorrows may be finite, but love is not. As I once read, "Every day you're alive is a special occassion."

As I know from experience, love is a true treasure, and to find pure love with someone is a blessing. Such love should be cherished and celebrated each day; never put off telling someone how you feel.
