Elizabeth: I sense you have heavy sadness.
Cassie whipped around and looked at Elizabeth defiantly. Elizabeth instantly knew she over stepped her bounds. Cassie looked at her first as if she was going to attack her but something about Elizabeth made her back down. Cassie just turned back around trying to fight old tears from falling down her eyes.
Elizabeth: You loved your son's father very much didn't you??
Cassie, still looking away, nods slowly.
Cassie (in a whisper): Yes I still do. You
know Kyle is Mike's grandson?
Elizabeth (shocked): No I didn't. We really
didn't get much chance to talk about anything else besides how Kyle and
I escaped The Leader's shuttle.
Cassie: Kyle Michael Donovan. I thought it
would be a good name. Parts of Sean and I in one.
Elizabeth: He is beautiful.
Cassie: Sean never got to see him though.
Maybe it's better; the way he is now I am not sure how his reaction would
be.
Elizabeth: It would have shook him. Parents
are important. Nothing can replace them in your life.
Cassie looked at Elizabeth and noticed she was sad also. Everyone had lost so much in this war.
Elizabeth: I never knew my father. My mother
killed him in front of me. When I was a child I was angry at her constantly
for that... then my grandfather died and she was all I had left. My Aunt's
Katie and Polly were killed during the second siege. I realized family
was important.
Cassie: Is it true that your mother was in
love with my brother also?
Elizabeth: Yes. One day she found us together.
We haven't been close since then. She left before The Leader came. I haven't
seen her since. Maybe that's better too. I think she was still in love
with Kyle. Seeing us together now
would be painful for her.
Cassie: I could see why. You and my
brother seem to move and act as one.
Elizabeth: Cassie I know you might not believe
this but Kyle is my life. He has always accepted me. Half visitor and all.
He loves me for me and for no other reason. Once he told me he didn't care
who I was, what I did or where I came from. He was just glad I was there
with him.
Cassie: Then why?? Why did you leave him??
Why did you give it up to be some intergalactic princess??
Elizabeth: I bet it's difficult for you to
understand.
Cassie: Yes!! Yes it is. If Sean and I could
have been together we would have!! If Diana didn't want him so bad and
messed with his head so much...
Kyle (interrupting): What makes you think
Elizabeth's head wasn't messed with??
Cassie turned away frustrated. Kyle came up behind her and gave her a hug.
Kyle: Mac, please just listen.
Cassie (sighing): All right go on.
Kyle: The Leader had contacted Elizabeth through
some sort of telepathic connection. Everyone was so used to trusting
Elizabeth's instincts they didn't question it when she said she wanted
to go.
Cassie: And you didn't.
Kyle: It's not that I didn't trust Elizabeth.
It was the look is her eyes like she really wasn't there. I would
look into Elizabeth's eyes and everything was so clear and true. When The
Leader started communicating with her it's like she was in some sort of
a daze. Like she was under some sort of spell. When I told Elizabeth
I didn't want to lose her, Elizabeth would have said I never will but the
response she gave me was so distant and cold I knew it wasn't her. I couldn't
let her go without knowing she really wanted to be there.
Elizabeth: The second I saw Kyle on that shuttle
something snapped in me. I realized how much danger he was in and why he
had put himself in that position. The Leader said Kyle didn't understand
what true love was but I knew he did. He would have sacrificed his life
just to make sure this is want I really wanted. In that moment I realized
it wasn't.
Cassie: Then why the secrecy?? Why make everyone
believe that you were dead? Do you have any idea how it's been for me!!!
Thinking you were gone and that she killed you??
Cassie broke free of Kyle's hug. For
the first time in a long time Cassie felt like a hurt young girl. Not the
fearless leader everyone counted on to know , say and do the right thing.
She sat on the porch and cried like a girl who
had been hurt. Kyle sat beside her and
held her tight.
Cassie: YOU PROMISED ME!!! You and me against the world remember??
Kyle held his sister tightly and rocked her back and forth.
Kyle: I thought you were dead. I blamed my father for that for so long. If I knew Mac we would have came here right away.
Cassie gained her composure. A part of her was ashamed. Ashamed of what she had done and of what she had become. Cassie stood up and walked into her cabin. She closed the door behind her. Elizabeth took Kyle in her arms.
Kyle: She hates me.
Elizabeth: She doesn't hate you.
Kyle: Then what??
They heard footsteps behind them. It was Ham and Donovan.
Donovan: You two OK.??
Kyle: Fine. I don't know about my sister though.
Donovan: She's been through a lot.
Kyle: Than why won't she tell me??
Elizabeth: I sense she is ashamed.
Kyle: Ashamed of what?
Ham took a step forward.
Ham: Your sister met Sean in The Visitor's
Youth Corps.
Kyle: What you mean???
Ham: She was trained to kill humans and she
did it well. Sean and her were the Youth Leaders.
Kyle: Was she converted?
Ham: No, worse. They messed with her head;
made her feel like we were the enemy. Something like the reeducation
camps in Vietnam.
Kyle felt anger rising in his chest. How could they do that to a little girl?? Diana had taken her innocence away from her.
Kyle: Sean?
Donovan: They escaped together but Sean...
Kyle tried to feel sympathy for Donovan but it was hard; he remembered how Sean almost killed Donovan and now his son left Kyle's sister alone with a child.
Ham: You two must be tired. You'll need your rest. We're moving camp tonight; you'll need all your energy.
Elizabeth nodded and took Kyle by the arm and lead him away. Donovan followed behind him. Ham stared at Cassie and little Kyle through the window. Cassie put Kyle down. Ham seemed caught up in memories. The site of Cassie and little Kyle reminded him of his late wife. Cassie looked up and saw Ham staring at her. She came out of the cabin.
Cassie: Kyle and Elizabeth went to get some
rest?
Ham (nodding): You look like you could use
some too.
Cassie: No rest for the wicked.
Ham: Nice.
Cassie: You're not so bad Mr. Tyler.
Ham: Yeah well you don't know me so well.
Ham walked away as Cassie took a step toward her cabin. She looked at Ham one more time and walked inside. Ham stopped to gain his composure. Silently he went to find Chris.
Donovan walked to the cabin he shared with Julie. He was shocked to find her there getting ready for bed. The last couple of weeks they had all but avoided the whole sharing the bed issue. One of them was always out or already asleep. Tonight they were both there. Donovan and Julie smiled at each other. Donovan instantly felt foolish. This was Julie. They had been through so much together. She was his best friend and one time lover. What happened there? Did they just stop caring about each other that way? It all got mixed up in the war. They put that second to what they were. Donovan didn't give it much thought until Stephen Maitland. That's when Donovan realized they were over or were they?? When he looked at Julie she's the one he saw spending the rest of his life with.
Julie tried to comb her hair nonchalantly.
She tried to act like she didn't notice he was watching her. But Julie
knew better. Donovan knew her better than anyone. She stared at the bed.
She knew what she wanted but too much was
going on. How could she tell him how she really
felt. How could she explain it wasn't that she had fallen back in love
with Stephen but what Stephen represented. A normal life. Before the war
and before the world went mad. She
wanted to tell Donovan she still loved him
but didn't know where to begin.
Donovan: Julie?
Julie (nervously): Yeah??
Donovan: No... Nothing. I am going for a walk.
Donovan left the room. Julie plopped herself on the bed. This was going to be harder than she thought.
Ham sat down and looked at Cassie's cabin. He watched intently as the light went out in it. Chris sat down and looked in the direction that Ham is staring at.
Chris: You two have another run in? That girl's
got a lot of spunk. She one tough cookie.
Ham (still looking at Cassie's cabin): She's
been through a lot. Too much if you ask me.
Chris: Cute kid though.
Ham: Yeah real cute.
Ham stood up and walked away. Chris shook his head. He knew that look in Ham's eyes.
Chris (to himself): Damn Buddy this isn't good.....
Robin Maxwell sat in a room. Diana smiled at her seductively.
Diana: Are you all right my dear?
Robin (almost in a daze): Yes, I owe you so
much Diana.
Diana touched her cheek gently.
Diana: Why Robin dear, you have always been
special to me. No matter what am I here for you.
Robin: I don't want to leave.
Diana hugged Robin from behind.
Diana: I know dear but I need you to do this for me. Los Angeles is under control. But this new Red Dust may kill us; you wouldn't want that.
Robin looked at Diana frightened.
Robin: Oh No Diana!!! I couldn't bear it if
anything happened to you.
Diana: Remember darling I was there for you
when they all turned their backs on you. When you loved Kyle so and they
made you feel like he was Elizabeth's when he should have been yours. When
they were all so busy
protecting Elizabeth they let your father
die. I am the only one who truly cares about you.
Diana bent down in front of Robin.
Diana: So what are you going to do for me?
Robin (in a zombie like state): Find Julie
and the others and lead you to them.
Diana: Then what my dear?
Robin (still zombie like): Kill them all.
Diana kissed Robin lightly on the cheek.
Diana: Very good my dear. Now you know what to do, correct?
Robin nodded like a child. Diana's chamber doors opened. A guard appeared.
Diana: Robin needs to rest now.
Diana hugged her again.
Diana: I will come to say goodbye before you have to go.
Robin smiled like a small child and disappeared with the guard. From the other side of the room the doors opened. Sean Donovan appeared.
Sean: Can we trust her?
Diana: Her mind is mine.
Sean: Isn't it true that you haven't found
anyone else who can breed with the Visitors? Why send her on such a risky
assignment?
Diana: Because Julie and the others trust
her; besides that's why the best will be watching over her.
Sean (smiling): I assume that's why you summoned
me?
Diana took Sean in her arms.
Diana: Yes, you will be her protector... from
a distance of course. I couldn't lose you.
Sean: That will never happen, my love.
Sean and Diana kissed deeply. From another
room Philip listened in through a small device. He had to tell Donovan
what was going on. He just didn't know how.......
Julie: What's going on?
Cassie (pointing at her companion): He thinks
we should release more dust into the area.
Donovan: Why do you disagree?
Cassie: Then they will know we are here.
Julie: What do you propose?
Cassie: Releasing dust in the Remington's
Pass area.
Julie: But the Visitors already drove you
out of there; won't they think it would be a diversion?
Cassie: We need at least another week to develop
a stronger antioxidant for the fifth column; after that it won't matter.
Cassie walked away frustrated.
Man: What do you think?
Donovan: Why the rush?
Man: We received a message from New York.
The dust is weakening there if we don't start moving this stuff we could
lose the East Coast.
Julie: But the dust is still so unstable.
Man: That's what I said but Cassie and the
others don't care. Rumour has it more Motherships are on their way.
Julie: So Cassie's right; it's now or never.
Man: She normally is.
With that the man walked away. Julie and Donovan stood there watching him walk away. Suddenly there was a commotion. People started running out of everywhere. Donovan saw a jeep speed toward him; he pushed Julie out of the way just in time. They dusted themselves off and stood up looking around confused. Kyle and Elizabeth ran up to them.
Kyle: You two O.K.?
Elizabeth: What was that?
The Man that was standing there with Cassie before came up to them looking concerned.
Kyle: Whoever that was sure in a hurry.
Man: Yeah they were.
Kyle looked around.
Kyle: Where's my sister?
Man: That's who was in a hurry.
Kyle: WHAT!!
Man: She's on her way to Remington's Pass
to release some dust.
Rachel (suddenly appearing) : Isn't that over
two hours away?
Man: Damn!!! That girl has a death wish.
Kyle started to storm off. Donovan ran after him. He grabbed Kyle.
Donovan: What do you think you're doing?
Kyle: Going after her!
Donovan: No way man.
Kyle: What do you mean No Way!! SHE'S MY SISTER!!
Donovan: You don't know the area. You'll get
yourself killed.
Kyle pushed Donovan off him.
Kyle: Outta my way Mike!! I'm not letting her go like you did your son!!
Donovan reared back like he was going to hit Kyle. Kyle put his fist up. Chris held Kyle from behind as Ham stood in front of Donovan.
Chris: Knock it off both of you.
Kyle shook Chris off. Donovan relaxed a bit behind Ham.
Julie: This isn't going to get you nowhere.
Kyle, Donovan's right. You don't know the area. You could walk
right into a trap and not even know it.
Kyle: So what; I leave my sister out there
alone???
Julie: No we get someone who knows the area.
Man: Everybody that knows the area can't go.
We have things we have to set up here.
Kyle: What?? So you're just going to let her
go??
Man: We don't have a choice. The production
of the dust is first priority; everything and everyone comes after that.
Kyle: You've got to be kidding me!!
Man: You may not like it but that's the way
this unit works. Cassie acted on her own; she knew the consequences in
that. I'm sorry.
The Man walked away. Kyle put his head down frustrated. Elizabeth put her hand on his shoulder.
Donovan: I'm sorry Kyle.
Elizabeth: You can't just send her out there
alone. I don't care how they run things; that's not the way we are.
Julie: Elizabeth's right.
Ham (taking a step forward): I'll go after
her.
Donovan: You don't know the area either.
Chris: Yeah but I do. Come on Ham, let's get
moving.
Kyle watched them walk away. He looked at Donovan and stuck out his hand.
Kyle: Man, I'm sorry. I was...
Donovan (taking Kyle's extended hand and shaking
it): It's fine man. I understand.
Elizabeth watched Ham and Chris disappear into a tent.
Elizabeth: Good Luck.......
Later that night Cassie hid in a small cave. She heard sounds outside. Instantly she put her back against the wall of the cave and pulled out her hunting knife. She saw a shadow entering the cave. She listened to the footsteps carefully them rolled her eyes and put her knife away. Ham and Chris entered the cave and looked around. Ham turned and saw Cassie standing there leaning against the wall.
Cassie: What the hell are you two doing here?
Ham: Not even a knife in your hand; what if
we were lizards?
Cassie: You weren't. I could tell by
the footsteps.
Ham: What if I was someone else?
Cassie: I would have known.
Chris: Pretty cocky for a kid.
Cassie: I was trained well. I knew it
was you.
Ham (smirking): I'll take your word for it.
Cassie: You two still haven't answered my
question.
Ham: Did you think we would let you go and
have all the fun?
Cassie (sitting down): I take it my brother
freaked.
Chris: You could say that. So what your plan?
Cassie: Get to Remington's, release some dust
into the canyon and come back. There's some grenade launchers that are
hidden in the old base on Mount Lemmon I need to get there and get them.
Chris: Sounds like a plan.
Ham: We better get going.
Willie walked around the camp. It was nice to be out at night, the red dust wasn't as concentrated here like on the mountain. He looked around; he thought back to Thelma. Just them Elizabeth appeared. Willie smiled at her.
Willie: Thelma would have loved Earth. She
never got to see it the way we do.
Elizabeth: Willie I'm sorry.
Willie: You feel responsible?
Elizabeth: If I didn't...
Willie: It is best not to regress things that
cannot be changed.
Elizabeth (smiled): Regret Willie.
Willie: Right, regret. You look well.
Elizabeth: Thank you.
Willie: I remember I told you once human love
can sometimes be very painful.
Elizabeth: Yes I remember that too.
Willie: I am beginning to see in the sun of
things love as a whole, Visitor or human, is all the same. Even in pain.
Elizabeth smiled... she decided to let that
one slip. She could see Willie had lost so much more than most people realized.
Here he was millions of miles away for home. A home that more than likely
viewed him a traitor. First he
lost Harmony, then Elias, then Thelma. Now
he just found out about Caleb. No one else realized it but Elias and Caleb
were his family. Willie must have felt like an orphan. Elizabeth understood
how he felt. The only memories of
her father she had were of him pleading to
her mother to let him hold her. Then of her mother killing him.
It took her a long time to realize that it was just a ploy on her father's
part to escape and that her mother was still very traumatized by her birth.
As for her mother she tried to be a good daughter after her grandfather
died but the fact that Robin had fallen for a man deeply in love with her
daughter didn't help anything. She still remembered the day when Robin
found her and Kyle sitting there by the lake. They were kissing and her
mother caught them. Elizabeth still could see the pain in her eyes. A pain
that was always there every time she saw Elizabeth and Kyle together.
She knew it hurt her mother that she didn't go to Chicago with her after
what happened with John. But Elizabeth couldn't leave the resistance...
more importantly Elizabeth could not leave Kyle. In Robin's eyes
she had lost everything to a grown up daughter she hardly even knew. Robin
didn't contact Elizabeth after she arrived in Chicago. Elizabeth
didn't even know if her mother was alive. Willie saw that Elizabeth
was lost in thoughts. He looked at her and smiled.
Willie: I am happy you are alive.
Elizabeth: Me too. Willie I want you to know
I have always felt as if you were family... in a lot of ways you are the
only father I have ever known.
Willie (smiled): Now I must thank you.
They both laughed and started to walk up to
Kyle who was still sitting there watching the road that his sister sped
off on. Elizabeth saw him and told Willie she would catch up with him later.
She walked up to Kyle. Kyle smiled
at her and put his arms around her.
Elizabeth: I am sure Ham and Chris have found
her.
Kyle: I should have gone.
Elizabeth: I think Ham was right for you to
stay behind. You still see your sister as someone who needs to be protected.
What you don't realize is that she is a capable fighter and can take care
of herself.
Kyle (laughing to himself): I seemed to recall
having this conversation with someone else.
Elizabeth: Really?
Kyle held Elizabeth tightly. He closed his eyes.
Kyle: I just got her back I don't want to lose
her again.
Elizabeth: I know. But I have a feeling she
all right.
Cassie threw another log into the fire.
She looked back at Chris who was asleep already. She heard Ham come up
from behind and drop a couple of more logs. He took a seat across from
her. Cassie watched the fire completely
mesmerized.
Ham: You know you ruffled a lot of feathers
back there.
Cassie: Yeah well I have a tendency to do
that.
Ham: Weren't you the one preaching how much
you trust them?
Cassie: I do.
Ham: Well then, why are you acting on your
own?
Cassie: It's because I care. This is not just
your ordinary run of the mill resistance force we have there. If Diana
or anyone else gets a handle on where we are this whole war could be lost.
Ham: So you are the self appointed guardian?
Cassie: Listen are you here to help me or
give me a lecture?
Ham: O.K. I am backing off.
Cassie: Personality isn't my strong trait.
Ham: Really... I guess that's the one thing
we have in common.
Ham watched her; for some reason she fascinated
him. She looked like your average 19 year old girl but if you looked in
her eyes you saw a lot more. There were years of pain but there was intelligence
and cunning in them. The same kind of cunning he saw operatives with
lifetimes of training. He knew that she did indeed know his footsteps
back there in the cave. Klaus had trained her well. There was
no doubt in his mind this 19 year old girl
sitting across from him was a trained killer.
But when he saw her with her son there was a lightness. The last
piece of her innocence was wrapped up in her son. The part that still dreamed
and still had hope. Ham caught himself
staring at her; immediately he looks down.
"She's just a kid, old man," he thought to himself.
Cassie: Tell me Mr. Tyler, how did you find
your way back to LA?
Ham: After Chris and I dropped off Robin in
Chicago we headed out to Florida to help the resistance in the Everglades.
Cassie: You spent some time there before right?
Ham: A while ago. When the ceasefire
ended and we heard about Elizabeth and Kyle; we headed back out to try
to locate Julie and Donovan.
Cassie: What's your take on the starchild?
Ham: She's a good kid. Her and your
brother have always been tight. From almost the moment they met.
Cassie: Was she good to him?
Ham: Seemed to me she was. I didn't pay that
much attention to them.
Cassie: Mr. Tyler, I don't see you as the
non-observant type.
Ham: Well, I have a natural aversion to goo-goo
eyes.
Cassie (laughed harder): Now there's a word
I never thought I would hear out of you. Goo-goo eyes?
Ham: Well don't let that get around. Or else
this old man will have to show you a thing or two.
Cassie: I think I can show you a thing or
two; besides that your not an old man.
Ham shifted his weight. Cassie looked down uncomfortably.
Ham (clearing his throat): You better get some rest. I'll take first watch.
Cassie got up not saying a word. Ham stared into the fire still trying to push away whatever insanity he was feeling for Cassie.
Donovan and Julie walked over to Mac's tent.
Mac: We have some news. We intercepted
a message. Some high profile prisoners are being sent through Tombstone.
Julie: Anyone we might need?
Mac: Need? No.
Mac pushed a piece of paper toward Donovan and Julie. They skimmed through the list. Donovan reread the last name. Julie's eyes got wide.
Julie: Get Kyle and Elizabeth.
Mac: You do realize...
Donovan: I know we are on our own but we're
going. We don't leave one of our own to die.
Julie (still looking at the list): Robin...........
