"This Is The Way The World Ends"
Part Four

Cassie and Tyler drove up the mountain. Tyler watched as Cassie expertly maneuvered the jeep they were
driving up the hill. Chris held on for dear life in the back seat.

Chris : Hey little lady, do you mind smoothing out the ride a bit?
Cassie: Oh come on.  A little mud never killed anyone.

Tyler laughed; Cassie looked over at him, shocked.  It was the first time she ever heard Tyler laugh.

Tyler: How long until we get back to base?
  Cassie: An hour, tops.
Tyler:  I'll tell you it was an interesting sight watching those lizards gasp.
Cassie: It's the one draw back to the new dust --  it's mutilation factor.
Chris: How is it on humans?
  Cassie: Fine so far.
Tyler: You want me to take over?
Cassie: You don't know the roads.

  Tyler stayed quiet.

Chris: I have to commend you Cassie. You're the only person that has been able to get Tyler to back down.

  The three of them laughed.

Robin slept peacefully. Elizabeth watched her.  The rescue mission went well.  Too well according to the man
everyone called Mac. They checked Robin vigorously. There were no bugs on her. She seemed very tired. Her file
said Diana had performed numerous experiments on her. Everyone said that's probably why she was acting so
withdrawn. Elizabeth sensed it was something else. Kyle backed up Elizabeth. Elizabeth exited the room. She
walked into the room where Kyle was sitting on the couch.  As soon as he saw her, he opened up his arms to her.
Elizabeth sat in his lap and closed her eyes. Julie watched the two of them together. Mike came up behind her.

  Julie: They are so connected.
Mike: All they have had for the last few years is each other.
Julie: There was always something about them though.
Mike: They never questioned how the other one felt. I guess in a way it didn't matter. They just knew they loved
  each other.
Julie (still staring at them): We never were like that. There was always so many questions between us.
  Mike (Shocked): Yeah, there were.

Julie looked at Mike seriously. Mike looked down.

Mike: I don't know. It seems like our lives were always filled with "when things calm down" statements.
  Julie: And things never did. That's the difference between us and them. They didn't wait for things to calm down;
  they just went for it.
Mike: You make it sound like it's too late.
  Julie: Isn't it?
Mike: The one thing I have learned in all is that it is never too late.

Mike put his arm around Julie. Julie buried her head in Mike chest. She hadn't felt his arms around her in so
long. Not this way at least.

  Julie: So you're a grandfather.

  Mike laughed.

  Mike:Yeah I guess I am.
Julie: I am going to check on Robin.

Mike nodded. Julie pulled away, then reached out for Mike's hand. Mike smiled and took her hand in his. They
walked into the room that Robin was in.

Elizabeth held onto Kyle tightly. Kyle knew something was wrong; he waited for Elizabeth to tell him.

Elizabeth: After all this time you're still the only person I trust with everything.
Kyle: Want to talk about it?
Elizabeth: My mother... something is going on with her. I don't want to tip anyone off. But I don't think everything
  is o.k.
Kyle: So who should we talk to about this?
Elizabeth: Cassie. We could trust her.

A voice is heard from the doorway.

  Voice: Trust Cassie for what??

Elizabeth and Kyle jumped up. Kyle ran over to the person and hugged her tightly. The person is revealed to be
  Cassie herself.

Kyle: Don't ever do that again!!!

Cassie broke free for a moment.  Looking angry, she took a deep breath and took a couple of steps further into
  the room.

Cassie: Kyle, I am not a child anymore.
Kyle: Listen to me.  You may not be a child anymore but you always be my little sister. I am entitled to worry   about  you and tell you not to make rash decisions.
Cassie: I don't do anything rashly. I think out everything.
Kyle: Your not invincible Cassie!! Stop acting like you have a death wish. You have a son that needs you.
Cassie: Don't ever use Kyle against me!!

Elizabeth took a step in between them.

Elizabeth: O.K. you both have valid points; yelling at each other won't solve anything.
Kyle: You're right. Cassie I just got you back.  I don't want to lose you all over again.

Kyle walked out of the room. Cassie watched him go.

Elizabeth: It's best to leave him be.  He'll be back in about five minutes.
  Cassie: What's his problem?
Elizabeth: He blames himself for what you had to go through. He feels as though if he had protected you better
nothing bad would have happened to you.
  Cassie: That's ridiculous.
Elizabeth: That's the way he feels.

Kyle walked back into the room. He looked at Cassie and hugged her again.

Cassie: Kyle, you can't go back and change things; this is who I am now. People trust me to protect them. You   can't run after me making sure I don't get hurt.
  Kyle: I know.

Cassie released Kyle from the hug. Kyle took Elizabeth's hand. The three of them walked over to the table.

Kyle: Look, we need to talk to you about something.
  Cassie: About Robin?
Kyle:Yes, Elizabeth suspects there is something wrong.
Cassie: Mac did say it seemed too easy.
Elizabeth:  Something doesn't feel right. I haven't been able to connect; she's been in a daze since she's been here.
Kyle: They say it's because she has been a victim of Diana's experiments. But Elizabeth doesn't think so.
Cassie: And you don't feel like the others should know.
Elizabeth: If they start acting different around her she will know.
Cassie: Alright then, I will talk to Mac.
  Elizabeth: Just like that.
Cassie: There are three people I trust in this world. Rachel, Mac and Kyle. If Kyle trusts you enough to  go with a
feeling that you are having, then I guess I do too.

Cassie walked out of the room. Kyle out his arm around Elizabeth. Elizabeth put her head on his shoulder.

  Elizabeth: It's a start.
  Kyle: It's more than that.

Kyle kissed Elizabeth on the forehead. Willie walked into the room.

Willie: Your mother is waking up.

Elizabeth walked into the room. Robin was propped up in the bed. She smiled at Elizabeth. Elizabeth held back
her tears. Robin reached out for Elizabeth.

Robin: Oh honey, I was so worried about you!!

Elizabeth held her mother tightly. Everyone in the room was holding back their tears. No one noticed the sly
smile she gave Kyle.  At least that's what she thought. Kyle caught the look she gave him. He shifted
uncomfortably. He heard someone clear her throat. It was Cassie.

Cassie: Everyone needs to clear the room.  Robin needs to be checked out.

Everyone started to leave. Cassie put her hand on Elizabeth's shoulder.

Cassie: I am sorry Elizabeth.  That means you too.

Elizabeth nodded.  She tried to look in her mother's eyes. Robin looked down, avoiding eye contact with Elizabeth.
Robin remembered Elizabeth telling her a long time ago, that was how she could sense when something was not
right with someone. Elizabeth looked confused. Robin sunk down in her bed and closed her eyes.

Robin: It's alright honey. I am just a bit tired.
  Elizabeth: Alright mother.

Elizabeth exited the room. Cassie called Elizabeth and Kyle into Mac's office.

  Cassie: How's tent city?
  Mac: Everyone is settled in.
Cassie: Pity that we are going to have to move again.

  Cassie looked at Kyle.

Cassie: We are giving Robin a strong sedative; it should knock her out for a day. That should long enough to  move base to a different location.
Mac: It's not going to help if they have trackers.
Cassie: We will deal with that later.

Mac and Cassie stared at each other intently. Elizabeth and Kyle watched them curiously. They knew some kind
of conflict was going on between them.

Cassie: Tell your friends to get ready to move.

Kyle and Elizabeth  left the room. Mac flipped the papers.

Mac: Never figured you to go soft.
Cassie (staring at Mac): Are you forgetting who really runs things around here?
Mac: No, I would never do that. I have a hard enough time pretending to be in charge much less really doing the
job. I am not doubting that you are capable.
  Cassie: Then what?
Mac: If it was anyone else...
  Cassie: But it's not.
Mac: Come on, Cassie. She is the only human proven to be able to mate with the lizards plus if her brain is mush...
  Cassie: Nothing's been proven yet.
  Mac:  If it is...
Cassie:Then I will deal with it myself!

Cassie looked out the window. She had made so many tough calls. She had always detached herself from them.
She made decisions that no one else wanted to make and when it came down to certain things she was the one
they had always counted on to finish the job. Cassie found herself hoping Elizabeth was wrong.  If not, Elizabeth
was handing Cassie Robin's death warrant. Cassie knew if it came down to it Robin would have to be terminated
and Cassie would have to be the one to do it. For the first time in a long time Cassie wished she wasn't the leader
  of this group.

Cassie walked out into tent city.  People where already pulling up their stakes. Elizabeth and Kyle  stood there
with Rachel and little Kyle. Cassie's stomach turned. Tyler came up behind her.

  Cassie: We're relocating again.
  Tyler: I heard. You alright?
  Cassie: Fine.  Let's head out.

Cassie walked away. Tyler followed her. Mike and Julie were packing up ammunition. A figure watched from far
away through binoculars. His sights set up Cassie, standing there with Tyler. The person stop looking through the
binoculars. Sean Donovan smiled to himself.

Sean: Well, if it isn't my beloved...
