"This Is The Way The World Ends"
Part Five
by Rosalyne

Kyle woke up and smiled.  Elizabeth was asleep on his chest holding him gently. Kyle kissed the top of her head.
He heard a tap on the tent they were staying in. He slowly crawled out of the sleeping bag he and Elizabeth were
sharing and put on a pair of jeans.  He quietly unzipped the tent. He saw Cassie standing there. The sun wasn't
even up yet but Kyle could tell by the look on Cassie's face whatever the reason for Cassie's early morning visit
he wasn't going to like. Cassie walked away from the tent; Kyle followed. Cassie looked to make sure they were     far enough away that no one would here what she was saying.

Kyle: Whatever it is, you know I am going to tell Elizabeth.
Cassie: I know; in fact I am counting on it because I don't think I can.
  Kyle: What is it Mac?
Cassie: Kyle, I think you two need to know what will happen to Robin if she's proven to be converted.
  Kyle: What do you mean?
Cassie: What do you know about conversion?
Kyle: Just what everyone else does. I know it's reversible.
Cassie: It's not like the good days with Tyler and Julie. It's aggressive  -- complete and total mind reversal. We have had people blow their heads off in front of us because they were so loyal to the lizards.
  Kyle: What are you saying?
Cassie: The chances of any kind of recovery are non-existent.
Kyle: So what will happen to Robin?

Cassie looked at him. Kyle shook his head.

  Kyle: No, not a chance!
Cassie: Kyle, we don't have a choice.
  Kyle: We let her go!
  Cassie: It's not simple.

Cassie turned around and took a deep breath.

Cassie: The last person we let go went back to the visitors and told them everything about us. We lost over half
of the unit. I vowed I would never let that happen again. Since then I have dealt with all the converts.

Kyle looked into Cassie's eyes.  He realized who it was.

Kyle: It was Sean.  You let him go.
Cassie: Yes, and it was the worst mistake in the world because I know Sean would have rather been dead than
  what he is now.
  Kyle: You can't...
Cassie: Robin is more than just a convert.
  Kyle: Yes, she's Elizabeth's mother.
Cassie: Exactly! And the only human proven to be able to mate with the lizards.
  Kyle: So?
Cassie: Meaning as easily as we found a way to get rid of the lizards they could do the same to us.
Kyle: What makes you think Robin hasn't given birth to another Starchild?
Cassie: We checked. There are no signs of recent child birth.

Kyle shook his head. He didn't know how he would tell Elizabeth this. Cassie looked at Kyle.

  Cassie: I got to go.
Kyle: Yeah me too. I don't have patrol until 9:30.
Cassie: We have a meeting also. All patrol and non medical staff.
  Kyle: Fine.

Cassie walked away. Kyle opened his mouth like he was going to say something. Instead he walked back into the
tent. Elizabeth was still sleeping peacefully. Kyle got back into the sleeping bag. Elizabeth stirred for a moment
then wrapped her arms around Kyle once again. Kyle stared at the ceiling of the tent.

Cassie walked briskly, fiercely wiping the tear from her eyes. She bumped into someone.

Cassie: Damn it, watch where you're going!

Tyler held her arm in his hand.

Tyler: You'r the one not watching.
  Cassie: Let me go!
Tyler: Not till you calm down.

Cassie twisted her body.  Before Tyler knew it he was on his back on the ground. Cassie looked down at him. Tyler put his hands behind his head.

  Tyler: Feel better???

Cassie reached out for Tyler and helped him to his feet.

  Cassie: Sorry.  Rough morning.
  Tyler: I see.
Cassie: There's a part of me that wishes Kyle never came back.
Tyler: It's easy to be unattached when you feel like you're not answering to anyone.
Cassie: I don't understand why he gets under my skin.
Tyler: He's your brother. My guess you had to tell him something he didn't want to hear.
  Cassie: Your guess is right.
  Tyler: About Elizabeth's mom.
Cassie: That's none of your business.
Tyler: Your right it ain't.  You have to do what you have to do. I understand that's the way things are. However,
the rest of the crew ain't gonna understand and they will try to stop you.
Cassie: Don't you think I know that?  And when they do I am going to have to make a decision.
  Tyler: I got your back.
Cassie: Why should I believe you?
Tyler: Because I have watched this unit.  There's a reason why you're the best and only unit on the West coast.  You had to make decisions no one else had the guts to make.
Cassie: Why'd you go back, Tyler? You and the rest of them mix as well as water and oil.
Tyler: Don't know.  I guess we all want to feel like we belong somewhere.
Cassie: I got to go.  Mac wants to see me in his office.

  Tyler watched her walk away.

Julie and Mike stood in front of a propane stove drinking coffee. Julie made a strange face. Mike laughed.

Mike: Think we'll ever get use to this stuff without sugar?
Julie (laughing): Knowing us, when we do we will probably be so used to going without that we'll think it tastes
  funny with it.

Mike and Julie laugh. Julie looks up at Mike; her eyes dance playfully.

Mike: It's been a long time since we have laughed.
  Julie (soberly): True.

Suddenly there are shouts from a group of people. They seem to be dragging something. Julie grabs her bag and
runs over to them . Julie gasps when she sees who they are dragging. Mike's eyes get wide.

  Mike: Oh My God, Sean!!!!

Cassie runs up to the group; Cassie looks down at Sean. He's beaten and bruised; there are signs of venom   around his eyes. He looks as if he's been tortured. Mike grabs his son. Cassie looks at Sean, trying to keep her emotions in check.  Mac walks up behind Cassie.

Mac: Now, in he goes to the prisoners center.
Mike: Like hell he does. Cassie are you going to let this happen?
Mac: It's not her call. If you want, Julie can work on him.
Cassie (still staring at Sean): We need to relocate again. Everyone get ready to move out.
  Mike: We can't move him!
Cassie: Then you can stay behind with him!
  Julie: Mike, it's o.k. He'll be o.k.

  Julie looked at Cassie. As much as Julie hated it, she knew they were being set up. First Robin and now Sean;
something wasn't right. Cassie and Mac walked away.

Cassie: Take the unit to The White Mountains. I will take the LA unit back to Mount Lemmon.

Mac: You're playing right into Diana's hands.
Cassie: She still doesn't know who Mac is.
Mac: It doesn't matter; look, you know that whole group is a walking funeral.
Cassie: Everything I did, you guys can finish.
Mac: I don't like the way this sounds.
Cassie: In a little while I will send Kyle and Elizabeth up to you guys. If anything happens to me they will take
  care of little Kyle.
Mac: No one is this unit is going to agree with this, Cassie.
Cassie: It's not up to everyone else.  It's up to me.
Mac: Let them fend for themselves.
Cassie: If that's the attitude we have grown to have, then we are no better than the lizards.
  Mac: Then let me stay.
Cassie: No you need to get the rest of the unit to safety. We have compromised too much already. Send out red dust units to the East Coast as planned. We have people in Florida waiting to ship it to Cuba and Australia.
  Remember the big picture.
Mac: What makes you think Diana isn't waiting to ambush us???
Cassie: If we give her a wild goose chase it will provide a diversion. Come on, now who's going soft?

Mac looked at Cassie; he knew her well enough to know her mind was made up.

Cassie: I don't have much fight left in me. I have done things most people would consider atrocities. Maybe this is
the way someone like me goes out.

Before Mac could say anything. Chris and Tyler come up to them.

  Chris: So what now?
Cassie (Smiling at Mac, trying to reassure him things will be alright):We will be heading out within the hour.
Mac: I am taking the rest of the group to another location. Cassie will be taking Robin, Sean and the rest of you
back to Haven. I am leaving Maggie, Barbara, Kim, Jack, Stan and Freddie with you.

Mac knew Cassie would not openly defy him in front of everyone. Cassie let it go. She knew Mac was trying to
protect her.  In a lot of ways he was the only father figure she had ever known. Mac looked at the girl in front of
him. She was their leader, but for the first time in a long time he saw a young girl. Mac put his arms around her
quickly almost as if he didn't do it that fast he wouldn't have done it at all. Cassie accepted his hug.

Mac (whispering): We all owe you more than you will ever know.
Cassie (whispering): Take care of my son.

Mac pulled away. He turned away from Cassie and started yelling out orders. Cassie turned to Chris and Tyler.

Cassie: Tell the others to pack up; we move within the hour.

Cassie stood in front of an injured Sean. He looked so weak and hopeless. Mike stood there watching him. Sean
opened his eyes. He looked at Cassie, shocked.

Sean: Cass, is it really you?
Cassie(staring at him coldly): Yeah, Sean.  It's me.
Sean (struggling to smile): The baby?
  Cassie(shocked): You remember the baby?

Rachel brought Kyle in. Cassie took him from her. She showed Sean little Kyle.

Cassie: This is your son Sean. Kyle Michael Donovan.

Sean reached out and and touched little Kyle. Kyle wrapped his hand around Sean's finger. Sean lost
consciousness again. Cassie ushered the baby out of the room.

  Cassie: Take him now Rachel.
  Rachel: Cassie, don't do this.
Cassie: Listen to me.  I trusted you with the most important thing in my life... my son.  Now go.

  Rachel hugged Cassie tightly.

Rachel: I promise you I will protect Kyle with my life.
Cassie: I never doubted that.  Now go!

Rachel walked out of the room. Mike watched her leave, confused.

  Mike: Where is she going?
Cassie: She's leaving with the rest of them.
Mike: You can't.  You saw Sean remembered he had a baby.
Cassie: We can't take the risk.
Mike: That isn't some prisoner of war in there. That's my son --  the father of your child.
Cassie: I may be only 19 but you don't have to state the obvious to me.
Mike: So please tell me why you are so intent to believe everything is a trap?
Cassie: Because my son isn't going to end up on a platter!!! Or worse... so far gone in his head that he doesn't
recognize the people that love him!!! And yes, I am hard and I don't take chances on anything especially my son's
  life!!!!

Julie came out into the hall. She looked at the tense conversation going on between Cassie and Mike.

Julie: Cassie, Kyle is looking for you.
  Cassie: I'll be right there.

Cassie began to walk away; she turned back around.

Cassie: You need to remember something, Donovan. Kyle may be your grandson, but he's my son. I will decide
  what's best for him.

  Julie looked at Mike.

Mike: She's only a child.   What does she know about caring for a child!?

  Julie looked at him coldly.

  Mike: What?
Julie: You just sound like someone we both knew. She was a grandparent too.

Mike realized Julie was talking about his mother. Julie walked away. Mike stood against the wall digesting
everything Julie and Cassie had said.

Cassie walked into the room Kyle and Elizabeth were in.

Cassie: If you guys want an argument, I am not up for it.
Kyle: No we don't... we just want to know why you chose to stay with us.
Elizabeth: We could find our way back to Mount Lemmon.
Cassie: I didn't know my presence was so offensive.
Kyle: We are not dumb, Mac. We know what's going on here. We are sitting ducks for Diana. Why did you chose   to come with us?
  Cassie: It doesn't matter.
  Kyle: It matters to me.
  Cassie: Not now Kyle!!!

Cassie walked out of the room.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *

A few hours later the small group of people were on Mount Lemmon. Robin and Sean were brought to the
infirmatory. Cassie watched Sean sleep. Mike, Kyle and Barbara, Chris and Maggie were on patrol. The rest
stayed in camp. Cassie walked out of the room. She was greeted by Elizabeth coming out of Robin's room.

Elizabeth: Both of them have been sleeping a lot.
Cassie: That will change tomorrow. We are taking them off the sedatives.

Cassie sank down to the floor. Elizabeth watched her face. Cassie fascinated Elizabeth; one minute she could look
like your normal 19 year old teenage girl, the next she could look like a cold blooded killer. At that moment Cassie
  just looked tired.

Elizabeth: You think they are here to trap us, don't you?
  Cassie: Yes I do.
Elizabeth: Kyle told me what would have happened to my mother if you didn't do this.
  Cassie: What do you mean?
Elizabeth: I know if this was any other situation you who have terminated both my mother and Sean on sight.
You're not as hard to understand as you make out to be. At least this gives them both a fighting chance.
Cassie: You know what can happen to your mother, don't you?
  Elizabeth: Yes I do.

Elizabeth stood up.   For a moment she felt dizzy. Cassie caught her.

  Cassie: JULIE!!!

Julie ran over to Elizabeth. Elizabeth recovered.  Just then Kyle came back in from patrol. She saw Julie holding
up Elizabeth. He ran over to her. Elizabeth smiled.

Elizabeth: I am fine, Kyle... don't worry.

  Kyle picked up Elizabeth.

Kyle: You have been pushing yourself way too hard!

Cassie and Julie looked at each other. Julie smiled at Elizabeth.

Julie: Why don't we check it out?

Cassie pulls back Kyle. Kyle struggles for a moment.

  Cassie: Let them go Kyle.
Kyle: I want to be in there.
Cassie: I need you to watch over Robin.

  Kyle breaks free of Cassie.

Cassie: Come on now, go.  It won't take that long.

Kyle walks into Robin's room. Immediately Robin eyes her eyes.

  Robin: Hello, Kyle...
