Throughout history, people have celebrated the middle of Winter in many different ways; some commemorate a birth or rebirth, and others the joys of Winter. Holidays have been adopted and rewritten by each group from the others, and the celebrations have been shared and changed in the same way.
Many carols traditionally thought of by many people as Christian Christmas carols originated in the pagan celebrations adopted by the Christian church. Likewise, many of the carols that Pagans and Wiccans share with each other are adapted from origins in the Christian church. Others borrow a tune, or words, from an existing song; this type is often known as "filk" music, recognizing its similarities and differences from the folk music process. These songs may be humorous or serious, their origins notwithstanding.
